hey anons, i recently fell down the watch rabbit hole after my neighbour gave me a 15 min presentation of his collection after i complimented his watch. now im hooked and after a few weeks of study i've marked a 'grail watch', but being a new homeowner (mortgage slave) in a country with retarded real estate prices i can't justify the price.

what i like about it: the 'brequet' numerals are warm and classy, but not so absurdly serif'y that they are annoying to read. the moonphase dial is my favourite complication by far, but the novelty of the day, date is cool but a little lost on me--i could do without it. for that reason, i also think the PP-5396 is also nice.

for more detail if anything else fits the bill: i like the smoothness of the case+bezel. color wise, rose gold/gold are both good because i would prefer to wear a darker leather band and i think they complement classically. i enjoy the bright dial color.

Something I found with my Casio Duro (infamous for terrible lume) is that while it became basically useless after about 10 or 15 minutes, when I woke up to it at about 1 or 2am, it was clear as day because my eyes were so well adjusted to the dark. And even then, I only charged it under a desk lamp for a few minutes about 2 or 3 hours before I went to bed.

So any level of lume is probably going to be pretty good for the middle of the night if you're just waking up and checking it before going back to bed.

It ends up being more bulky than using lume, obviously, but on a lot of higher end watches they use fuckin baguette cut gemstones for indices. It wouldn't be that much more bulky, if at all. The hands get a little more complicated, maybe you'd have to compromise with regular lume to keep the hands reasonable size and dimensions. Or maybe you could use different colored vials for the hands, so even if the vials were the same size you could make the dimensions of the hands whatever you want and still keep it clear which is whish in the dark?

I love the idea of a tritium watch and that watch looks excellent but my one worry, and I know this might sound chicken little, but I worry about what happens years down the line when the tritium noticeably fades. Can you reasonably and affordably have the tritium vials replaced, or is it just time to buy a new watch? What if Ball isn't even in business anymore when when that day comes? I have some guns with tritium sights and I love them, but some of the ones that are getting on in years are definitely much dimmer than the newer ones which you can almost see glowing in the day time. But I guess the time scale we're talking about where it would really become a problem is 20 to 30 years.

That's more because most watches are poorly designed. Your typical movement is about 5mm thick, add 3mm for hands, 2mm for a crystal, and 1mm for a caseback. Boom, 11mm.

But lots of watches have an oversized crystal and hand space to give the illusion of more depth which makes the dial look fancier.
