Yeah. They feel different on the wrist, the proportions are all wrong.
That's why there are so many Santos/Tanks for sale second-hand: they may look great and be historically significant designs, but on-wrist they can be quite uncomfortable.

I think the mistake that a lot of people make is in sizing. Wearing a square/rectangular watch the same size as what you'd normally wear in a round watch will look positively huge, but when you size down, people complain it looks too tiny.

Overall it doesn't look like it would be too intrusive, but if you're an office drove trying to flex his junior level Rolex that double thickness clasp with a plastic protection case probably wouldn't work very well. In the early days of watches, like before the 1950s, there were all sorts of experimental designs. Look at Cartier. Their whole thing is unusual case shapes. The watches themselves all have white, time-only Roman dials. It's the case shape that sets them apart.

Since then we've kind of settled on round as being the most intuitive and comfortable.

As for size, yeah, you're fine. The PRX has quite a high lug to lug because of the integrated bracelet, you're well within it. The dial looks a touch small that high on your wrist, but it's totally within the ideal zone when measured in the proper place, being ~56% of your wrist width.

Here's my thrilling design document, totally to scale.

The back is just a replacement part, I could grind it down myself but the most I can save is 1.4mm that way due to the thickness of the backplate, so there's no point, I might as well just buy one and get it thinner. Aside from the piece the bezel insert sits on, everything else is just basic flat grinding with stones, sandpaper, and paste. The custom tool is just a washer ground down to the right dimensions to sit where the bezel insert goes, with a chamfer so I can only grind down, not sideways. I'll just swivel it around in the hole with some paste to take off material from the bezel.

I may actually end up taking more than this off, I'm still unsure how thin I can make the insert and ideally I want it pretty close to the glass.

>>17566952
Yeah, because I'm shaving down both the inner piece the bezel insert sits on, and the bezel insert itself. Plus the caseback is really thick, most of the saving is there.

How much does your watch weigh, and how much does your strap weigh?

Right now, my watch weighs 106g. Of that, 42g is the strap, so the watch itself is 64g. I'm curious what the ratio is like for other people, is 60/40 typical? Is 50/50 better?

I imagine most people don't. It's incredible how fucking hard it is to find information about weights and shit online.

Here's an example right, Seiko rotors. There are a bunch of factories producing fancy replacements for see through casebacks with stupid styling on them. Not one lists the weight of the rotor. Seiko don't even list it, unless it's hidden in some service manual you have to pay for. Is the weight required? Can I shave a few grams off it and it'll still rotate well enough to wind the watch? Nobody knows.

I don't understand why people mod their Seikos anyways. Most of the time it just takes away anything that makes it unique and turns them into a homage watch. I saw one get posted with a swaped out bezel and jubilee bracelet to make it look like a GMT-master. It didn't even have a GMT hand to make the bezel useful. I think you're better off leaving it stock.

I do. Sure, it's a gram here, a gram there, but it all adds up.

>>17567076
Sure, but what's the ratio like? If an average person keeps does enough movement to fully wind their watch in X hours with a bi-directional rotor, what's happens if the rotor is half the weight? Does it take twice as long to wind? If 1 hour is enough to wind the watch, what does it matter if it takes 2 hours of wearing instead if you're wearing it all day anyway? How much weight can be removed before the rotor becomes worthless?

>>17567080
People mod seikos because they're cheap. What does it matter if some guy puts an ugly GMT bezel into a 200 dollar watch? As long as he isn't trying to sell it as a super rare pre-production factory one-off, what's the issue?

>> No.17567091

>>17567087
>what's the issue?
I don't really take issue with it, I just find it silly and would never do it. If you want a GMT-master and can't afford one, just buy a homage like a Steinhart, don't hack up a perfectly fine Seiko. Just my opinion.

I mean, you can swap a bezel out in 2 seconds, same with a bracelet. If you can buy a 200 dollar watch and spend 50 bucks in parts to make it what you want, doesn't that make more sense than spending 500 bucks on an homage?

Personally I don't mod existing watches, the Chinese sell cheap cases that are essentially just the same shit they produce for microbrands only at 1/10th of the cost. It's not hard to put a cheap Seiko movement in one, because ETA movements are overpriced.

I guess that makes sense. I just think if you wanted a GMT-master on a budget you could get a homage that actually functions like one with a 4th hand. But if you're just looking to switch up the look of a cheap watch then modding might be a good idea. I still wouldn't do it. Maybe I would upgrade a crystal to sapphire or the bezel insert to ceramic, but I would leave the watch looking like the way it was designed.

Honestly I wish there were more options for small classy gmts without a big rotating bezel. I don't know why they don't just do something like an explorer with a GMT movement in it with 24 hour indications on the outer edge of the dial, that way it's a tough simple watch that you can dress up if you want to but it can still track 2 time zones. I don't see the point in a GMT bezel on a non-GMT watch either, but maybe he just liked the look and doesn't use the bezel anyway. Bezel inserts are a pretty mild change, even swapping the whole bezel out isn't that big of a deal, you don't even have to open the watch.

Well, it helps if you get parts that go together. Pick up some Rodico, and some finger cots so you don't get greasy finger prints all over your nice new parts, and so you can pull the grease off if you do. They now make little foam q-tips that soak up rubbing alcohol like sponges so you can clean stuff off if you do anything messy, regular q-tips leave cotton shit everywhere. The chinks sell movement holders for like 5 bucks and they can be useful, a crystal press is good as long as you remember the cheap ones aren't straight, so you have to push a little bit then rotate the watch a bit to get the crystal to go in straight. You can get all this shit from china aside from the Rodico.

Sure, but you never know if you're going to keep it. My watch came with sapphire, but it's too thick, so I bought another one. Or you could decide you'd rather have AR coating, most stock crystals don't have it. You can use them to take out bezel inserts, reattach bezels with tight gaskets, or you can use them to push on snap back cases when somebody needs a battery change, and they're not very expensive.

Rodico is great when it comes to fitting hands, you can use it to both hold them without any real fear of doing any damage with a toothpick, and you can use it to clean them of all the marks you made trying to fit them so they look pristine. And you can use it to take all the little pieces of dust off the dial that invariably stick to it in the half a second you pull it out of the case for. And unlike most Bergeon premium watchmaking junk, it's cheap.

These are timeless imo. They won't look like they're from the 2020s in 20 years. Even Panerai somehow gets it right sometimes.
Omega? They always look like fashion trendy accessories that will age poorly.

I mean, it all depends on what you want. I'd say it's reasonable to do a first build from 150-250 bucks. You might be able to get away with 100 if you know what you want and you already have some tools.

As a basic benchmark, you can get an NH35/36 for about 30 bucks. You can get a watch case for about 30 bucks, with sapphire. You can get a dial for about 30 bucks. You can get some hands for about 10 bucks. Stick a 5 dollar nato on it, and you're done for cheap. Get a different watch case and you can get a bracelet with it for 40-50 bucks. Get a bracelet elsewhere for 20-30 bucks.

My bracelet was 90 bucks, because it's a mash up of 2 different ones and the case I'm using has some funky proportions. If you're using something more standard, you'll spend a lot less. My dial, movement, and hands were all in the above price range.

Only comment is i would avoid the leather nator strap (1 piece strap) options because they make the watch sit kinda high up over your wrist. The two piece straps are fine.
