Aside from the pinned thread are there any really good resources on fashion basics, preferably contemporary? Or would simply understanding the basics of art/design theory and current fashion trends suffice?

When you say "basics", are you referring to staple items or basics as in basic principles? I've got nothing better to do so I'll answer both as best I can:

Back in the day, the most common advice on here was going with Uniqulo for basic items if you just want to look above average and aren't overly concerned with standing out. I'm already too far gone for that and I've never purchased anything from Uniqulo, but that was always the going advice. ymmv.

If you're talking about basics like information, you'd best narrow it down to a particular look or sub-culture first. If you're interested in menswear, there's a whole world of history and style guidelines out there that will be different from, for example, diy punk fashion. If you just want to get an idea of what's out there, trawling forums/socialmedia/youtube is always a good idea. Mainstream fashion publications like Vogue and GQ are also surprisingly good.

Hope one of these answers helped.
