You should at least go to a shop and try on a few popular watches to get an understanding of what sizes suit your wrist. If you don't want to, the golden rule is measure your wrist's width, and you want the lug to lug to be 75-95% of that. So at 6.5 inches, you probably have a width of about 53mm, which means you want a watch with a lug to lug of 40-50mm. 56mm lug to lug? That's a no go, personally I wouldn't go above 85%.

looking for a red dial steel watch, what do you think? These are my candidates.
- Oris: looks rather unique but also seems like it wants to be a mixture of many watches, like the dial colour the most
- Formex: interesting design, may want to be a RO to much. Gives me Command & Conquer vibes, which is a plus
- Omega: most appealing dial, but I already have an Omega, not AT though
- Seiko: dial also goes in C&C direction, otherwise the indices and logo give me some kind of soulless vibe. Have another Seiko that I like, though

I find the Oris the most visually interesting. The seiko's hands seem too long and the indices are boring, but the dial itself is the coolest.

Omega is awful on every level aside from finishing, the white day window is disgusting, the hand choices are bizarre, they look like they're all from different sets. Formex just looks like a brick wall with an over-designed case, I'm not feeling it.

Pretty sure he was just raising a hypothetical.

That watch is a pretty good case in point. Before Journe blew up in popularity, that watch was quite affordable and easily sourced (by Journe standards).
While the watch itself is pretty nice, the hype around it makes it extra nice and people overlook its flaws (or re-christen them 'quirks') because it couldn't possibly be bad if it were such a hyped watch, right?

>> No.17549985

>>17549955
I don't really care about hype, but I can tell you that, even before Journe blew in popularity, the seasoned collectors, those who truly know their shit, already had a CB in their collections and constantly praised it (see SJX, for example) and that speaks more to me than any current hype.

Is a 1 watch winder sufficient, or should I spring for a 2 or 4 watch winder? 2 seems practical because if you have a beater, a dress and a sports watch you can wear one while the other 2 wind. Is there much reason to go to 4-8? Are there any features I should look for?

a good fake needs to be a recreation of a watch that is 1.) popular and 2.) simple to recreate. Otherwise the rep makers aren't going to realize the cash outlay necessary to produce the fake.
Closed caseback Rolex Datejust? Easy. They'll sell by the thousands so the incentive to make it as good as possible is there.
any Journe? It's so niche that it will never sell well and the manufacturing costs would make it prohibitively expensive.

Tudors bb36 is nice, but they ruined the black version with gold accents. Blue is cool, but I already have a blue watch. Really bummed about the black version.

JLC just lazily shitted out some more reversos

Chopard has a really nice 1860, like it very much, but its salmon. Not very exciting color, for me.

Grand Seiko finally has a nice chrono, it looks really good, but its still a bit of a chonker.

Rolex has a nice dress watch finally, with a display caseback!!! But its just a JLC clone. dont care about the rest

I like the green on the Air King, but the Explorer 40mm is way more of a "one and done" Rolex. It just shits on everything from Oyster Perpetuals, to Milgauss, Air King, any older variation of the Explorer. The only cope I have as a 114270 owner, is I can argue it's still a better proportioned (arguable) Explorer than the 36mm 124270 or this new 40mm 224270.

The Air King was never a good watch after the 1970s. It was 34mm and Rolex wouldn't even submit them for chronometer certification, some of the last watches Rolex did that with. They were for absolutely scraping the bottom of the entry-level barrel.
Now that Rolex is an unabashed, pure luxury product, they don't need a line with such a shameful history.

I think it's going to come down a little, but it's probably never going back to the 32-34mm range.

Dress watches (or dress-style watches) themselves, though. Those look like they're coming back. See, Rolex actually making one, albeit 39mm x 10mm. (That would be dress-style. Looks like a dress watch, but bigger)

"Super clones" are a meme. They don't exist. They still can't make bracelet screws smooth enough to unscrew for example. They always grind, and on top the heads are never perfectly cut.

Also once you open it up it's ogre. The Chinks will never be able to reverse-engineer the free-sprung balance, not the "teflon" reversing wheels.

Time and again, this is proven false.
Give an "expert" two identical but fake Submariners and ask him to tell which is fake, he'll swear up and down that "this one is fake, you can tell by the shape of the 's' in 'superlative chronometer'."

The way to tell a fake is by the movement. Apart from taking the caseback off and looking at it. Let a person wind it, play with the chronograph or the GMT hand, then you can tell how rough and shitty the fake is. But from just looking at it or trying it on? No. Rolex dials are very simple. Rolex cases and bracelets are very simple. That's by design, they're easier for Rolex to manufacture.

No. In the old days, they did solid casebacks because that was the norm. They stuck with it when everyone else went to sapphire casebacks because it was cheaper. Now, they're going to have to start putting some artful finishing on their movements because their movements may work great, but they look like shit.
