Sure they do. Nobody else is making a field watch with a T shaped time and date and screw down crowns. Nobody except Omega makes diving watches with dials textured with waves, and even then the pattern is different. And even the big luxury brands like Tudor all copy or "homage" Rolex shit. The only real difference is the price point. Nobody is going to find out your "rolex" is actually a Seiko or whatever, and Islander is putting their own branding on it so it's not even like they're trying to trick people with fake Rolexes. Why can Tudor and Davoso and others do it but some guy from New York can't?

You're an anonymous guy posting pictures of a watch on an image board. That means two things:
>you can easily fool people about your watch
Replicas look really good in pictures, and I get why so many people think they're 1:1 replicas. The thing is, I've actually handled a few Rolex "super fakes" and they didn't make a good impression on me. The bracelet is not as crisp, the clasp doesn't feel like the real deal and there's always something slightly off in the proportions (my daily watch is a Rolex so I'm used to looking at it several times a day). You can make a $500 watch look like a $50k, but it will never feel the same for obvious reasons. I'm 100% sure it would be the same with your fake VC.
>you can easily fool people about yourself
Some anons in these threads actually own some very nice watches so I'm willing to believe you bought yourself a 50k Vacheron. If I knew you in real life, chances are I wouldn't believe you.

See that's the thing with fakes. They can fool a lot of people on social medias (including myself) because the reality is easy to twist on internet, but it's a lot harder in real life.

I assume even watch people will just think “oh cool an overseas he probably paid like $15K for that” - they won’t be familiar with the 2000V unless they’re a VC super fan.

As for lifestyle - my lifestyle does support owning a $15K watch. I’d just rather invest that money than waste it on a watch.

I genuinely don't know anyone that isn't satisfied with a $500 Seiko, and I DO know a lot of watch people including people who own Rolexes that will concede that when you buy one of the expensive luxury brands you're paying for the history and legacy than you are paying for the quality of the watch.

As tools for keeping time, yes, traditional clockwork is objectively inferior. Quartz is both much cheaper and keeps time better. But there's an art to old school watch making that is amazing and deserves to be preserved and appreciated. Part of what ignited my appreciation for watches was being gifted a watch with a slide rule bezel. I was like "wtf is this?" and learned all about slide rules and how to use them and I would practice using my watch bezel as a calculator in real time. I never saw anyone using these on watches or even talking about them before but I was enamored with it.

It's so amazing to me that over 100 years ago people figured out how to make a spring loaded device that could be wound out and would track time, then they minimized it to the point where you could put it on your hand, then they figured out how to make it wind itself just by wearing it. At the same time someone figured out you could do complex math and unit conversion by sliding two rulers next to each other. Then someone figured out you could minimize it by making the rulers circles that run inside of one another. Then someone figured out you could put THAT on a watch. It's a completely analog computer on your wrist that you could have had 50 years before smart phones and it doesn't use a single volt of electricity. It's amazing.

We live in a world where almost everything is disposable now, from products to entertainment. I want to have something real and amazing.

40 years ago you could've had a watch on your wrist with an actual calculator on it, capable of far more complex calculations. The buttons were pretty hard to press though, you really needed a toothpick. Now everyone just carries around phones that can do all that shit trivially.

It's far more fantastical to me that people worked out electricity, and then figured out they could run that electricity through a piece of quartz for precision timekeeping. And a 40 year old watch that has never, and will never be serviced, still runs perfectly, probably better now than it did when it came out of the factory, because the quartz has aged and settled with time. I'm surprised modern zoomers aren't more amazed that a watch can last for a decade on a single coin cell, while their shitty phone can't last 3 hours of actual use.

I had a dream that I suddenly become trapped in this underground, frosted over ice cavern. It seems like there was no way out and it was hopeless. I wondered around, freezing, until I sat on this iced-over couch. Realizing I sat on something, I reached down and realized it was a Patek Philippe watch. Not unlike OP's, but not really the same. I was so moved by it's beauty that I started to cry. It glowed brighter and brighter then suddenly the ice melted away and I was able to find an escape. One of the most bizarre dreams I've ever had.

>It's just so amazing the stuff people came up with to do those things before
Before what? A hundred years ago we had fucking industry. Like, what advancement are you talking about here? Gears? We've had them for THOUSANDS of years. Miniaturization required mechanical precision, sure, and a few advancements and new designs, but at the end of the day, it's all simple stuff once someone has thought of it.

I've got to ask, why watches? Why not other forgotten technology, why not the insane level of accuracy and precision used in mechanical switchboards with relays and mechanical memory storage because electronic memory was still a fantasy? All those advancements, relay banks that took up whole rooms chattering away, now all rusting in a scrapyard because it's utterly obsolete. Why not be fascinated with cuckoo clocks and other automata, many of which were one off designs using complex cams to achieve realistic looking motion with simplistic parts. If it HAS to be watches, what's so interesting about a basic automatic movement that has been done to death, over something like an Accutron which can no longer be built because the tooling required to produce the index wheels with teeth .02mm wide no longer exists, so a watch that beats over 300 times a second is no longer feasible. Oh, right, it uses scary electricity.

Not that anon, but my fascination with them stems from finding that which can be achieved with an inferior, hopelessly obsolete technology very impressive, interesting and just plain beautiful in the case of watches. I take computers doing extraordinary things as a given; for example it isn't particularly mindblowing to see a quartz watch track the day, date, year and leap year over the course of a century. But a mechanical perpetual calender doing the same is absolutely incredible. It accomplishes that task with no electricity, no chips and no wiring, just mechanical parts and fine engineering. I have no bias against quartz and someday I'd like to own a nice super high end HAQ watch from Citizen or Grand Seiko but mechanical movements are cool too.

The Tank is the closest to perfect as it is unique in what it does. The rest of your list is downhill.

The 5916 is very nice yes, but too large. It's the worst model in the 96 lineage.

the Altiplano is a shitter for reasons mentioned in my previous post

The Vacheron is much too big and too bulky in front profile for a dress watch, it's inelegant.

The Lange is also too big, and isn't even the best dress watch they sell – that would be the 291.026, but the minute track is ugly. That's also one of the best currently for sale.

That Chopard is not a dress watch.

Breguet is beautiful but too big. The 5907 is the last great dress watch they made, the best being perhaps one of the "Empire" models.

For watches, a $300 casio can be considered expensive considering it doesn't do anything other than solar power over their $50 watches. Also being a frontloader it's pretty thin for a 70's automatic. 9,6mm on the highest part of the very slightly domed crystal.

To the anons fighting about the Casio (i don't want to quote every answer):

I was the one suggesting it originally. I think you're fighting without any reason for doing so, because you're both right; you usually expect Casio to have cheap prices with a nice quality. The Oceanus line is expensive compared to Casio standard prices, but it's still cheaper than luxury watches; it's a price point where you should look around and there are nice Citizen / Seiko / whatever brands with equivalent features. It's up to the anon to decide what's worth buying, depending on his financial situation and usage of the watch.
I like the Casio with the little digital display, but, coincidentially, a norme friend of mine said it was expensive for me this brand a couple of days ago, so there is some bias about them.

People talk about their investment income and paid off house in terms of their ability to afford a watch under discussion, or whether their lifestyle supports owning a replica of an expensive watch.

Explain to me how your pathetic manhood supplement of a gun is relevant here.

Because carry guns are a classic staple of EDC discussion, as are watches. Also if watch people can make threads about watches on /k/ I don't see why people shouldn't be allowed to talk about guns and the watches and clothing combinations used with them in the /fa/ watch general. It belongs here more than it belongs on /k/, I'd argue.

This isn’t an EDC thread. This is a watch thread.
If you want an EDC thread, make one.

The less you spend on watches the more you can spend on guns. Then next month you can spend more on watches to compensate. It's an eternal and self-correcting cycle.

Large cheap 50+ collection with multiple cases, these are the 6 "luxury" pieces. Will check /wt/ every once in a while, nothing ever really changes. The same eternal safe picks for people under a grand ad nosium. Watch world is very stagnant

People shouldn't talk about those things in a watch thread.

gun people suffer the same disease so prevalent with watch people: they just have too many.
I only have my glock 19 which is my daily, and an old 1911 bequeathed by my grandpa that I keep by my bed.
