Does anyone know of any watch strap specifically designed to go over the sleeve of a jacket?

Specifically? yes, but only NASA bought them which means they're outside of your budget. NATO straps are just long nylon webbing. Find the material, get a sewing machine and make one, or get a leatherworker to make you one.

Yeah, google NASA strap or find the longest size Nato strap you can. I think people in times gone past probably justed used one side of a strap with the buckle, taken out the spring bar and used the buckle to buckle it to the end of the strap on the watch

are dress watches meant to survive freezing otherwise inclement weather? I'm a little leery about my GS or Rolex getting wet from rain/snow or too cold or whatever

>> No.17509444

>>17509439
How inclement? If you're wearing the metal its near your skin temp. I assume you're wearing a jacket or gloves and you're not outside shoveling snow in south Dakota for a living. Unless your skin is in pain, the watch is fine in colder temps like that. Similarly, if you're even asking the question I doubt you're taking your Rolex or GS on a 2 week long hike into the wilderness.

>getting wet from rain/snow
You are aware they're water resistant to at least like 20 meters of water right? Some have more than that...

Rolex guarantees their sports watches will operate within specifications between 8 C - 38 C, but it is well known they can take much more.

I've never been to New York because I'm American but there are many documented cases of rich guys wearing a Rolex daily for like 50 years and with a few services they're fine. And by daily I mean even the times they took their kids on vacation to a beach on the ocean, days on the lake, and building a snowman with Jr. and the photos show they're worn in every possible environment. If were had hypothermia I'd say your watch is likely to be too cold, but you have bigger problems than a watch service if you have actual hypothermia.

Don't be the guy that buys a Rolex and never wears it so it doesn't get scratched. Or buys that Ferarri and never drives it so it doesn't wear out or lose too much value. Or gets a race horse and lets it stand around a field all the time.

Yeah I think at one point Rolexes were known for being fairly durable for active daily use. Jackhammering or whatever? Probably not. But using it on the boat, working on your car (lol), or doing whatever else it wasn't known for being fragile by anyones definition. GS? No idea, but walking around town, working in an office, having a drink in the lounge? Definitely fine doing that.

Smart watches seem dumb, get a regular watch instead.

smart watches are extremely convenient in a lot of ways so I might just succumb to it. you can track so much so easily: temperature, orientation, texts, distance covered, heart rate, etc. just seems very valuable for like $500 2bh

Yes, I'm fully aware the meter rating is just a simulated pressure rating for the watch. You getting cum on your watch or splashing some water in it doesn't provide enough pressure to get anywhere near that 100 meter rating. Its why the rating difference between 100 and 200 meter "rating" is irrelevant. Its all just a few rubber gaskets and tight fitting parts. Chrono car themed watches are fucking stupid. Even /wt/ hates them. Aviator watches can get obnoxiously busy and difficult to read with 10000 indices that 99.99% of watch wearers do not even know how to read or use. They're also not known to be attractive by anyones definition.
>Actually more convenient
you just contradicted yourself with your own made up person of wearing a dive computer and a divers watch. Divers watches did previously have a purpose and divers did use them to monitor time and oxygen left. Nobody uses them any more because computers on the wrist were invented. Your imaginary friend may wear a divers watch because he likes the look of it and did lookup how to appropriately use it, but its probably easier for him to just leave it on while wearing actual dive equipment to save his life.

Actual divers who are avid hobbyists, earn a living from diving, or the yuppies that bought all the equipment and did it twice in the bahamas aren't seeking out a Divers rolex, casio, or anything else to calculate remaining oxygen because you know... their lives depend on it and a shitty rotating bezel is moronic now that dive computers exist.

But maybe it's just me, I had my vintage phase where I got used to taking off my watch before anything remotely moisture-related, and I overreacted to that inconvenience and now I won't touch anything with less than 100m WR. Basically if I have to take it off before taking a shower it's too much trouble

I'm the same way with shoes now too, I used to be about leather soles everywhere and I had all kinds of cope arguments about how "leather can handle water, how do you think cows survive in the rain", eventually after trying to polish out the salt stains on a nice box calf upper, I just snapped, and I refuse to buy a shoe unless it has a rubber sole now

It's like getting a girlfriend who you think has a great body, but actually just had liposuction.
At the time, you don't know she didn't put in any work to get that body. You don't know she's not going to get orca fat all over again.

You can be satisfied with good-enough quality if the producer is upfront that they're giving you good-enough quality. Grand Seiko, on the other hand, goes out of their way to hype up their finishing, which, as it turns out, is limited only to a few places.

Rolex, on the other hand, doesn't talk about their finishing at all, but they DO finish the plates and the wheels that no one will ever see behind their closed casebacks.

Look at their movements with your own eyes. Compared to other brands in their price point, GS's movement finishing is industrial, bordering on crude.

But that's not actually the point. Grand Seiko only cares about case finishing. In the Seiko group, it's Credor that does the high-end movement finishing. Bringing up movement finishing to make GS fans screech is just lazy bait.

I have heard that their bracelets and clasps aren't great.
