What you see is exactly what you get. Not great, not terrible. I'd get a Seiko for nuclear lume but that costs more and vostok transcends the ugly and knockoff tiers in the sub-rolex bracket. Dive watches are grody on the whole, so much that soviet design is at least honest. It's a brand new 60s dive watch for not a lot of money because reasons. You could buy an old skin diver and have it refurbished in the time it takes to get one for 6x the price and would be disappointed because actual vintage watches are mostly shit

An amphibia let's you know how shitty it is and the bar is so low that it does a sick backflip over it and lights a cigarette. It's like wearing farm equipment. I'd rate it at $350 were it made anywhere else under other circumstances.

fuckin where? Most quartz out there look the same as automatic
>your money is used on other things than movement
You don't know how manufacturing and profits work do you? They're making the same cases, same crystals, same dials, instead of a $50 automatic movement, they're using a $4 quartz movement and keeping that extra profit. See OPs listing about minimalist watches. Yeah they're 'different' from other major brands, but at the end of the day they're not doing anything special and simply making more profit off a cheaper movement.
>the watch tells the right time
that is the only benefit to quartz. Cheaper, and you just put it on and go. No setting, no winding, no nothing. Just go and use it to tell the time 4 hours after rushing out the door to get to your cubicle job to talk about last nights sportsball and get those TPS reports done before going to one of your employer's allowed breaks.

The reason for shitty casios to have all that text is that you don't expect the retards working retail to have any sort of capacity to set up any display or information to describe the product. So the watch itself has to sell itself when some customer pulls it out of a bin or it's sitting under glass.

And that's fine for selling it, for telling the customer EVERY MOMENT THEY LOOK AT THE WATCH that it has 20 bar water resistance is dumb as shit

Fair use and parody laws are complicated, but let's reduce it to "using a branded product in a film can easily be considered as profiting from the product". Books have much more leeway and precedence in regard to fair use and parody. At most, you can get away with saying the brand name but not using the trademarked product itself in a film. Or use it but not mention it, but they do have endorsement deals and contracts running which limit that.

That's actually the explicit legal prescedence of which fair use and satire are exclusive. I can't remember the big case that set it off but let's pretend it was a car movie with the car in all the posters. Say, Vanishing Point. It wasn't that but whatever. So you have a branded Dodge Challenger selling the movie AND a 20 minute drug fueled romp through the desert. Neither are covered under free speech exclusions and it opens the studio up to defamation.

You have to remember that "rights" manifest differently for people and businesses, businesses are not people, Rolex isn't merely embarrassed by the free speech of a film maker but an undesired association with a fictional serial killer who adores anything *he* perceives as high status, like Rolex, can cost a company millions of dollars in sales through no fault of its own.

That's why the rights of corporations tend to be more all-encompassing than those for people. As the other anon said, this was originally aimed to help businesses during an age when most businesses were small and competitive, now they're utilised by monopolies just because they can, frankly.

Anon it's not really that big of a deal, it doesn't really take anything away from the film knowing that Bateman is wearing a Seiko as a prop stand-in for a Datejust, the reality is that most of the time companies are actually thrilled to have their products shown in films, often even paying for the privilege to have their brand on full display to the audience, it's just in specific films with specific brands, they just can't show brand names.

Actually the widespread product placement shoehorned into films I think is worse than brands requesting to not be shown in a film.

Go read about fair use and parody and figure out where they align with generally not using branded products as an important matter of function that could easily be argued in court. There's a line and it's both obvious and extremely jewwy because they helped write the law. Sticking to comedy would probably be best for you unless you're extremely autistic. They are the closest to the intersection of all these things. You can show a Rolex (assuming you don't have a preexisting contract you don't want to ruin), you can say Rolex. You can't do both at the same time.

Tl:Dr, the script hit legal and it got flagged and they reached out just to see as matter of mostly private good will and Rolex said no. Under other circumstances, he would have just worn a linen datejust and no one would have commented nor would there have been a good shot of the dial. But it's not product placement in the case of American Psycho, there is a real reason narratively for Bateman to be wearing a Rolex as one of his many consumerist symbols that act like props in his inner dialogue demonstrating how much more superior he feels himself to be to others. The idea that a Rolex is a symbol of yuppie snobbery is absolutely true and makes sense for Bateman to own and assign that particular value to a Rolex, but that's not how Rolex's marketing presents their products (at least not openly, that shit with their ADs is almost certainly a subtle marketing strategy exploiting their brand as a symbol of one's position on the social hierarchy).

Ellis didn't mention Rolex in his book to give sales to Rolex, Rolex was just one of the many brands the consumerism he grew to be contemptuous of revolved around.

Oh that makes sense. So if you took that clock to almost anywhere outside north America, would the clock run 20% slower then?

Also, you don't think a battery to quartz crystal or whatever could run at 60hz to power a smooth sweep? Am I giving away how to make a watch company?

Any reason to not buy a PRX 35mm as my second watch? I currently have a g shock 5600 that I like, but it’s not dressy enough for work.

I work in IB as well. I wear dress pants and an Oxford shirt every day, which IMO doesn’t look good with the g shock. I’ll wear it with polos and chinos sometimes.

Anyone have any recommendations for a steel/titanium quartz field watch <500€ with a bit more character than the average field watch (think alpinist sbcj021). Solar and radio reception is always appreciated too.

Citizen Promaster Tough

>monocoque design, literally a block of titanium, doesn’t even have a caseback
>titanium has DLC coating treatment to prevent scratches
>movement is housed in a 16000 Gauss anti-magnetic non-ferrous structure (higher than the rolex milgauss)
>solar powered eco-drive
>anti-shock features; if the movement detects a hard shock, it triggers an electrical current that stops the hands from moving, protecting the moving parts and keeping accurate time in the process
>anti-glare shapphire crystal
>200m water resistance

Yeah I agree. I love tanks or other dress watches with no seconds hands and there's more quartz watches now with sweeping seconds like the new Seiko chronographs

no, battery powered wall clocks with smooth sweep already exist. here's a sample mechanism from the back of a seiko wall clock with smooth sweep seconds hand, runs on a single AA battery.
