You have department store specials that are total shit but the big names make cheap watches that are really good. Usually quartz but there are some automatics and manual winds down in that range that are cheap because the clockwork is an ancient design that paid for itself 50 years ago. Seiko 5 comes to mind. Some classic Timex too although they went up in recent years. They're nice watches, just not "nice". Up over $200 is where you see a huge jump in quality and features but not necessarily a noticeable one other than some finish details.

I know this thread is usually geared towards aspirational purchases and has a lot of poorfag FUD, but IRL use tends to be on the cheaper side of things and they last, sometimes too long. Cheap watches are tanks and you start to wish they would break.

Which of these shitters looks better?

Been looking for a no date, plain looking, time only watch to travel with and think I've narrowed it down to these two. Wanted solid casebacks and preferably fixed lugs, but guess I'll have to keep searching a bit more to find that.

If anyone has any suggestions; this is what I've been trying to find:

- Solid Caseback
- Fixed lugs
- No date
- Preferably mechanical
- Time only
- no dive/timing bezel
- preferably a screwdown crown
- minimal branding
- sapphire crystal
- Preferably no faux-vintage lume

Literally the plainest mechanical watch to ever exist.

The Sinn 556 has a date function, same with Damasko DAs
The Stowa TO2 is decent but push-pull crown and see through caseback
- Bertucci watches are mostly quartz and have mineral crystals

Fucking hell, 80s/90s Omegas were so godamn awful.
When you really think about it, the only good era for Omega were the 50s and 60s. The quartz crisis absolutely destroyed their ass, so they had to make all these cheap ugly shitters throughout the the 80s and 90s to keep the brand alive. There's a reason why 90s watches are cheap. They have none of the cool vibes of vintage and none of the innovations of the most recent watches. Soulless shitters.

There's a number of ways to spot aftermarket parts on a Pogue.

1. The subdial indices should stretch well underneath the main dial. On aftermarket subdials, there will be a small gap between the indices and the main dial face. (Your pic looks correct)

2. The Lume paint should be VERY thick, as if a bubble of liquid just solidified in place. (Hard to tell from the angle of your pic)

3. The 12 o'clock position of the rotating chapter ring should be a little bit fuzzy, aftermarket ones are very crisp and detailed.

4. The Angles of the case should be almost sharp to the touch with aggressive grinds. (Yours looks slightly rounded)

5. The Crown should be completely flush with the case from the angle your pic was taken.

There's other ways to spot from the dial and date window that I can't remember. I really wanted a Pogue a few years ago but, I was dead set on a full original until I realized I was going to have to spend a minimum $1000 if I wanted one in good condition.

The dial and hands look legit, the hour markers have definetly been replaced at some point since the lume still glows, the case has been polished a bit, so the angles are hard to tell. The crown is somewhat flush with the case. All original ones are cheap, no automatic chronograph is cheap though

Apple Watch.

Seriously. If you're wearing an analog timepiece, you're making a conscious choice and you're entering yourself in the dickwagging contest.
Pieces like the one you mentioned punch well above their weight in terms of coolness-to-cost ratio. That Timex is way cooler than some cost-equivalent Casio, for example.

True, but it's undeveloped. It's Apple Watch and then the field. Among Apple Watch users, there's some minor comparison between new models, but those are difficult to tell at a glance.

Have you seen a GS in person? They're quite blingy, even the "plain" ones, because of the faceting and contrasting finishes. The so-called "japanese design language" that the other anon referred to is actually the grand seiko design language. They created this concept in the 60s/70s to make their watches competitive when displayed in the store next to more "prestigious" imported brands. They really do glitter, when handled under powerful multi-source lighting. It doesn't stand out in stand-alone photographs, the notion of GS as a subtle "under the radar" brand is a reddit meme.

Adding flashy colorful dials with ridiculous novelty textures is gilding the lily and I for one find it distasteful. Obviously, many buyers especially white people find it superior, because despite all the nonsense about "I buy grand seiko to impress myself", the reality is they will be secretly enraged if someone faint praises their watch and compares it unfavorably to a swiss brand.

Just be careful. Polishing metal is as much art as science and it's very, very easy to fuck things up even with something like a gentle Cape Cod cloth.

When you take your watch in for service, they will refinish the case without fucking it up too badly.
An amateurish re-finish, where they just press the case up against a buffing wheel until it's shiny, will kill the value since all of the case edges will be rounded off.

Personally, I just live with the scratches. That's part of wearing a watch.

Sure, I've been to my AD in Manhattan a few times and own the SBGA413G. I wouldn't consider it glittery or blingy, but I can see how the matte brushed texture isn't for everyone. There is certainly room for traditional faces. I love the sheen of the hand-polished finishes; it's not blinding, but spotted well when reflecting light.

Overall, I'd say my watch is quite subtle. No one has ever made it the centerpiece of conversation, though I have talked about it with a few watch enthusiasts (one being my boss, who owns several models from the Holy Trinity) and they have become more positive towards Grand Seiko as a prestige brand.

Also, I'm okay with no one else caring about my watch or thinking it inferior. The fact is it's a beautiful piece of horological engineering and it is MY constant companion; to each his own.

What anon said, a lot of it is 60s Seiko design language, I disagree and wouldn't call it gaudy. They have their own midcentury design language that's superifcially similar to danish modern but tends towards details pulled from paper, ceramic, fabrics and lacquer work. There's also bits of wholly native industrial design like you see on contemporary cameras. Sometimes it gets overly ornate in an understated way, these things are designed to pair with formal dress kimono as much as business suits. It's ostentatious but not blingy.

I prefer the regular lines for daily wear where cost cutting cleaned up the design, but wouldn't turn down one of those cocktail watches.

I don't know much about that specific model but the japanese solar watch concept seems heavily reliant on these weird specially modded lithium coin cells with proprietary leads soldered onto them, which might account for the mythology about "capacitor". if I were to guess, the seikos are cheap, the weird proprietary batteries are not something stocked at the average watch shop, and with the amount of specialized shop time that it would take to open it up, order that weird part, wait for it, and drop it in, the average buyer probably would just give up and buy a new one.

This is the sad truth.

I wasted years and thousands of dollars on "just as good" soikos and "great value" microbrands. Constantly buying and selling, losing money most of the time, until I bought a Rolex and a breitling and now basically wear nothing else. I barely even look at new watches now because I scratched that itch.

Ironically lots of ledditors talk about having a "signature watch" and it being a heirloom for their kids and it being a "trusted companion/tool", but then have a collection with like 50 watches. You're kids will only want your watch if they saw you wearing the same piece for 30 years and associate it with you. Otherwise its going straight to the bin or the pawn shop when you die.

Buy one you like, and wear the hell out of it.

Probably the best bet for an authentic 60s diver, because it is one. It also has huge cred among those who actually go outside. Watch autists weren't really the ones who latched on to it, it trickled down to /out/fags from milsurpfags. Pretty in line with the cheap 60s dive watch pipeline.

>>17496241
Casual but tasteful. Hopefully not a fuckhueg case, watches like that wear better when they're smaller.

even then, eBay generally sides with the customer. it happened to me once. I collect fine literature (collection is worth about $40k so far) and ordered a Folio Society book that was not in mint condition as described on the listing. I tried to process a return and the seller declined, opening up an eBay case. eBay refunded me my money and I got to keep the book, which I then gifted to a friend

>More reliable?
>Finding a jeweler to replace a battery on a Sunday afternoon in some bumfuck shithole with good hiking trails is a special kind of hell

What does the word "reliable" mean?

Because "will go for years to a decade+ without any form of intervention" is pretty reliable. Good luck getting a Rolex serviced on Sunday afternoon in some bumfuck shithole.

Here's a crazy idea, if you REALLY knew you needed a watch to work you'd take a solar, something that tells you if the battery is low or one with the battery changed in the last year or so.

a fake vintage yellow-dial Seamaster would fall into that category. eBay will side with the seller on that for sure
if anyone really likes that watch and has the means to purchase it, I recommend giving it a shot. could be quite the steal if it's legit and in working order (both as described in listing)

*hic* yeah go buy a mechanical shitter because when your quartz dies after ten years then you might not be able to change the battery right away but when the mechanical dies and no one can help you in bumfuck that'll be ok.

Oh but you'll service the mechanical at regular intervals but won't replace the battery in your watch for years and years until after it dies, even before going to a bumfuck shithole.

When a mechanical stops working entirely, you have a serious problem. Quartz batteries like to die randomly, often without warning. It's just one consideration, not a total condemnation.

>Quartz batteries like to die randomly

They really don't though. Like there's some variation based on the exact battery and how often you use the backlight or whatever, but that's a "gee wonder if it'll last for four years or eight or 12?" question, not like a "IT COULD DIE IN 5 weeks AFTER CHANGING WHO KNOWS"

>When a mechanical stops working entirely, you have a serious problem

Yeah. But without service, how many mechanicals would you be SURE would last 10 years?

And if you are servicing a mechanical every 2, 4, 5 years, why is it so burdensome to do get a new battery put in before an imaginary trip?
