I'm trying to buy my first watch. Here are my requirements:

> Your budget
< 300 USD
> Watch type, e.g. dress, diver, pilot
Casual or dressish
> Movement, e.g. automatic, hand wound, quartz
Quartz or automatic
> Desired features, e.g. water resistance day/date, 2nd time zone
Day or date would be nice. Some spashproofing nice as well. No metal watch bands as I find them kinda heavy to wear day to day. I have a wrist diameter of 20cm (7.87"). Ideally <10mm thickness

I was thinking of going with the Sternglas Naos Quartz (38mm). It's sad that it doesn't have a seconds hand though. Was looking at automatic as well but it's 12mm thick which just seems too much. Is this a good buy? I understand that it's a dress watch but I want to wear it casually. Will this look dumb on me if I mainly just wear casual blue jeans and black shirts?

How are Swiss Army/Victorinox watches regarded? Normally I just wear a basic old F91W at work because they’re nearly indestructible and if anything happens it’s a $15 watch so who cares buy another, and I’ve got an old Benrus Vietnam War era military watch I picked up at a military surplus store as a kid and will wear when I’m not at work, but I found one of these (working) Swiss Army/Victorinox Cavalry Chrono watches at a garage sale for $20 and thought it looked cool for only $20. I doubt I’ll ever use any of the functions of the watch other than telling time but are they decent watches?

I like the way it looks and really like the look of old military style watches, but I don’t know enough about watches to know what is or isn’t good other than the usual Chinese junk stuff and I don’t want something that’s really flashy looking.

What are you calling fake patina? I don't see any patina on that at all. What am I missing? Also, diamond knurling is for high texture surfaces like a tool and generally regarded as ugly but functional. Its why its not more common on jewelry and watches.
>a better wr and case
So you want a boring watch but not too boring and one that isn't popular in size and also has known ugly elements not normally found on watches and features like 200 bar even though you'd never take a $1000 watch into a body of water because its just a neat benchracing feature. >Seiko SCVE027 and Marathon GSAR
Good lord those are fuckugly. The Seiko is just trying to match the pattern of the nylon band and the marathon is intended to be used under water with gloves on so while that knurling is functional and makes sense, its hideous on a piece of jewelry.

And I've never heard of "fauxtina", I've heard of fake patina and forced patina which usually doesn't help much other than super cheap chinese made whatever. I have a tin sign with fake rust thats printed on it in my garage but thats never a selling point for anything. Watch guys know lume gets a little brown and even watchmakers will use plain black coffee mixed with lume so it doesn't have that bright white color contrasting against a 70 year old dial. That makes sense but its not faux patina, its making it look like a normal servicing or mild restoration. And it is a good look, because the alternative of having brand new lume on an ancient watch would look terrible. Its why the third option of "leave the bad lume as is" is often the restoration preference. Hamilton using brown-ish lume is because thats the theme of the watch; brown strap, classic theme, and light brown contrasts well with the white and looks decent. Bright white lume against a white face would look bad.

Faux patina would be making new production watches and applying a corrosive agent to force wear, rust, and other deterioration on brand new material. Again, I'm not sure you actually know what patina, and faux patina is.

>because the alternative of having brand new lume on an ancient watch would look terrible. Its why the third option of "leave the bad lume as is" is often the restoration preference.
Being autistic i had ideas of re-luming my watch when i first got it. The lume plots were rather sloppily applied in the first place so i went to the watchmaker and asked him 'Could you remove the old lume and put new one on the chapter ring, and clean those little black dots while you're at it' and he just looked at me a bit weird and said 'I'd ruin the whole thing probably if i tried doing that, just leave it as it is'.

Hi /fa/ I'm willing to spend 15k on my first luxury watch for my 30th birthday. I am torn between either a gold day date or a submariner. Which Rolex is more iconic? Is gold sleaze core or does it stand out in a sea of submariners?

Check against Chrono24 and Watchcharts. If the price is reasonable, then go through the usual checks (condition of the exterior, servicing history if any, etc.). Are there any pics of the movement? The Chinese superclone movements look really similar, but there are still differences that can be seen if you know what to look for.

The prices look okay to me, and it's definitely on the lower end, but that's just me. If I were going for one of these, I'd pay the extra 100$ or so and get it straight from Japan; their laws regarding counterfeits are strict enough that I wouldn't be worried that it's fake. Buying from anywhere else would be too much of a risk from my point of view for this particular model. Unless you can guarantee authenticity, then it's a large risk.

If this is from Japan, then disregard and purchase.

Unfortunately they do fall into the "ironic wearing" category sometimes. You wear the F-91W for fun, knowing its a better clock and calendar than just about any automatic or other quartz out there but nobody will be impressed with your $11 watch, and it won't look "good" with anything you wear.

That all being said, if your friends are dickheads measuring penises based on how much they spent on their watch, get new friends. It won't stop with watches, there will be this subtle contest of who has the nicest suit, then car, then house, then how much you spent on a vacation and diamond ring. Even if you have the same income as them, its always going to be a less-than-subtle contest of who spent the most in a contest of conspicuous wealth. Get what makes you happy, not because you're in a dumb contest with friends of friends.

This. Something else to consider is that the Day-Date is not some fragile, finicky dress watch like a Cartier Tank.
It's still got all the shock resistance built into its movement that the sports watches get. It's still got 100m of water resistance and a screw-down crown. It's a tough watch, despite obviously being made of a material that scratches pretty easily.

Can be used for mudding, swimming, executive meetings, sleep, shower with it, basically never notice it's in your wrist.
Basically tactical, but also presentable.
Its look will forever withstand the test of time.
You'll never have to worry about collecting other pieces EVER again.
No service or maintenance required.

i am not envious of your life anon jesus that sounds alienating. having said that, your watch is fine. it is very much a watch that says you are completely removing yourself from the rat race of having a luxury watch and you should have just owned it. most people i know don't give a shit or know anything about watches. i usually wear a sarb or a khaki and i would actually feel self conscious admitting that my watch costs several hundred dollars in most situations (because people would probably think it's weird to spend so much, to clarify). only times i have met people around my age (early 30s) wearing luxury brands, they did indeed bring it up so you knew. both guys from extremely privileged backgrounds (like vacation house in the hamptons type beat). it honestly came off pretty cringe but also made sense because money literally doesn't matter at all to them. i wonder what your friend and his coworkers do that they all wear luxury watches. i would feel weird wearing something so nice if i can't afford it comfortably, personally. archie would disagree, i know..

Get the Sub. Yes, every dipshit has one, but gives a shit. If you want something dressier, get the sub and two tone datejust. Buy solid gold watches when you have 7 figures in your bank account.

Picked this up for 30AUD at some show; was quoted 420 AUD for replacement of the mainspring, crystal (Plexiglass) and a clean of the case and crown.
I've been told it's a 1969 Seiko, the strap is also busted so I'm debating paying for a restore or spending 500 AUD. Thoughts?

The finishing is a bit nicer on the Oceanus. The tech is roughly the same, the Oceanus looks cleaner because it doesn't have the digital display.

>$300 for a service
Nah, you're better off buying a working watch, be it quartz or mechanical, for that money, but like with any old mechanical you're gonna have to service it eventually.

Absolutely not worth it at all unfortunately, you would be far better off spending the money on a decent vintage JDM Seiko. You can get them pretty easily online and will be all around better investment, once restored that model of Seiko isn't really worth much money anyway

Can anybody tell me if I can get a leather strap to fit on this Seiko? Seems like a good deal for a vintage watch but I'd like to have options for how to wear it.

You'd have to cut it yourself and it would look a bit scuffed probably. Or have one custom made, but that's not reasonable.

Love the big date complication here.
Seiko makes the nicest GPS watches on the market. (And I usually prefer Citizen.)
Just make sure to try it because that's huge. (45.5mm, some GShocks are smaller than that.)
Also make sure that you are fine avoit no one caring about it on the internet. That implies poor resale value.

any ideas for what I should be looking for instead? I like the high contrast watchface and small diameter

Save some money, at least 200 to 300$, and buy something new or vintage but in good condition so you can enjoy the watch carefree for some time. If you buy shit like this it's really not worth the effort and money.

I think we misunderstood something, the watch runs and is in fine condition, I see no real issues (the scratch isnt something I care abou, I'll scratch any watch I wear anyway)
