As is the case with most Seiko Prospex and 5 watches, I unironically think the only reason Seiko even got a name for itself was by being cheaper than Swiss brands and that made up for their watches just being ugly as fuck. For the cost of a modern Seiko though, there's always far prettier watch from the Swatch Group to be had, while AliExpress shitters are better quality than Seiko for less, albeit with cringe branding placed on even cringier homages.

Latest shitter for my Tissot collection. This one was made by fucking Casio of all companies, and sold under license with Tissot's branding on the "dial", inner caseback, and on the bracelet. Other than that? It's a regular Casio Casiotron from the 70's. Super weird shit.

When I got it, it was fucking CAKED in wrist cheese, didn't work correctly (according to the seller), and was generally just looking sorry for itself. I spent yesterday afternoon washing the case and bracelet, and while I waited for it to dry, I cleaned the board and battery contacts up with some IPA and it seems to be working fine at the moment. It's miles away from being mint, but for what it is? I'm pretty happy with it.

Spent around 50 quid on it, and it's pretty cool IMO. Peak hideous 70's watch design at its finest.

I like date windows on sports watches, but it does boggle the mind how hard it is to find a no-date dress watch. A dress watch is only going to be an occasional wear for me, I don't want to have to keep setting the date when it's not a daily wear for me and I imagine probably not a daily wear for most people. By all means, let's have variety and for people who daily a dress watch I'm sure they're thrilled to have so much choice, but why not offer date and no-date versions? I wouldn't mind a ghost position even, I just want some symmetry with my elegant dials please.

Yeah, it's fucking nuts, lol. That said, I these Casiotrons were either one of or possibly *the* first ever Casio digital watches so I have no clue exactly how much they were back in the day. Swiss parts, far east assembly.. honestly it couldn't have been cheaper to ship the parts all the way to a sweatshop in China just to then ship those now assembled parts all the way back to Switzerland to be placed in a case to still achieve the coveted Swiss Made marking.

Not to mention ruinous for the environment and a dick move to Swiss workers, really going more luxurious and charging more money was the best thing for the Swiss watch industry. Well.. presuming ETA, Sellita and in-house movement manufacturers don't still do this.

That stepper motor is properly fucking retarded. I've seen these before in like early Ronda movements.

It's especially embarrassing for the Swiss, that the Japanese already had proper stepper motors figured out already in the beginning. Pic related is my Seiko 3803, the 38xx series was Seiko's very first actual mass-production quartz movements. You can't go any further back in time than that without shelling out ridiculous money for a Seiko quartz that was made only in like 10000 units, or 1000, or a 100 (yeah, Seiko had production runs like that for their first quartz movements). But already you have the now-common motor layout.

Also I wonder if that Tissot has a Motorola chip. In the early days watch manufacturers didn't have chip manufacturing set up yet, so they bought the frequency-divider chips from companies like Motorola.

>>17471581
>honestly it couldn't have been cheaper to ship the parts all the way to a sweatshop in China just to then ship those now assembled parts all the way back to Switzerland
They were really fucking struggling. "Far East Assy" were cheap 6x8 ligne quartz movements, that were probably made completely automated. Shit like the ETA 805 series, which I think is now made in Switzerland again, but it's a disposable, mostly plastic shitter movement. So naturally it's gonna be stuck in $300-$400 Tissots. What a scam.

Honestly don't know, you'll likely need to have them serviced by a competent watchmaker. I don't have to think about that part, since I just service them myself in my own store.

Also getting a vintage high beat that doesn't break the bank is getting tricky by now. If you settle for 28800bph you can look into Seiko Elnix electrics, or Citizen Leopards. For 36000bph (what's considered true high beat) you can get a Citizen Cosmotron 78xx series, like mine in >>17471619 but these are electric, and the seconds hand has a halved beat rate, so it only appears as a slow 18000bph (but if you put it to your ear you hear the true high beat glory).

Tell me about it, I fucking love how backwards Tissot 2030 and 2031 movements are, though. They're such weird little turds, but I'm slightly in love with them for that fact. I got mega lucky with the one in the pic above as this is what it looked like before I serviced it. Delicious battery corrosion. Didn't even need any parts replacing which is absolutely mental given how far gone it was.
>It's especially embarrassing for the Swiss, that the Japanese already had proper stepper motors figured out already in the beginning. [...]
This is pretty common of Japanese watches in general, I find. They BTFO the Swiss at every corner, and usually do it for a fraction of the price in the process. I know those Seiko Quartz-Astrons or whatever they were called bring fucking mad money, but it's not surprising when there are so few of them to go around. I rarely buy Japanese watches, but the Seiko Quartz Superior Morpho will forever be at the very top of my "grail" list. It's immensely beautiful.
>Also I wonder if that Tissot has a Motorola chip. In the early days watch manufacturers didn't have chip manufacturing set up yet, so they bought the frequency-divider chips from companies like Motorola.
I have no clue, unfortunately. You might be able to find out on CrazyWatches.pl if you're keen on finding out, though.
>I'm not sure if it's gonna die at all, unless you have a chink alkaline battery leaking, or water ingress, those movements are mostly metal.
I use silver-oxide batteries in all of my shitters, I've seen enough disasters like picrel to know better than that. The movement in my Mondaine already has issues, which is why I am incredibly wary of it. That, and the setting feels a bit crunchy sometimes. I might have a go at servicing it sooner or later, just never worked on one before and can't find enough documentation about how to work on them. Got any resources?

If it were half the price, I would buy it. There is obviously no way it's worth $6,600 to produce, so why put it at such an insane price point? how many of them will they even sell, like a handful at most in the entire continental US / EU?

Is the Bambino the best bang for your buck dress watch for under $1,000?

I’ll be in business casual for work a few days out of the week starting next month and my dive watches don’t fit right under my dress shirt’s cuff. I’m willing to spend a bit on a dress watch, but I haven’t seen much that looks better under $750.

What's the point? A basic suit costs more than that lmfao?

>> No.17472203

>>17472177
Under 1k? No. Under 200-250 bucks? Maybe yeah, at least in the dress watch category.

Also, you can probably shop around for a Seiko Cocktail TIme for like $200-300 which honestly blows Orient out of the water (even though Orient is literally owned by Seiko). If you want some other options, I'd look at some of the midrange Citizens or lower end of the Tissot catalogue. You'll get bang for your buck, but a significantly nicer watch than a Bambino for under $600 even.

That being said, Bambino is a great watch and if you really love it on your wrist, get it.

>> No.17472209

>>17472203
Orient is not owned by seiko its owned by seiko Epson, seiko holdings (that owns seiko) is a separate company. That's why seiko watches don't say Epson on the back, they are sister companies but not literally owned by the same company.

I'm a big fan of Japanese watches, especially Orient and Seiko. But i wouldn't recommend a Bambino if you're willing to fork out 700-800 for a dressy watch.
With that kind of money you can get a dressy, but still somewhat casual Certina or Tissot model (leather strap, or bracelet). I like the Visodate, but you can go for one without the day of the week indicator, lots of models, so i encourage you to browse those two brands in particular.
There's any Hamilton Jazzmaster (tho i don't like them personally).

But if you're looking to go cheaper i think it boils down to Bambino vs Cocktail time.
Both are beautiful, the Seikos have an edge, but they are more expensive. It boils down to "do i need this 100-150$ , should i use it for something else, save it, or buy another watch". If the answer is "yes, yes, i could use that money for something else", then get the bambino you like the most. If you're willing to dish it out for one watch, get the cocktail time.
I find most models of both lines beautiful, but SRPH78J1 is a fucking stunner. It looks like it could easily cost 4-5 times more, and it's like 10$ more retail than the basic cocktail time (if your retailer has it, that is).
Or check out some Orient star models.
But 1000$ gives you a lot more options. The bambino is a no brainer if you have 500$ sitting around, and could maybe use some of that money next month.

Not that guy but its still streamlined, I think what you meant was minimalistic but you're deliberately overlooking the sunken edge and center, plus the texture in the center. A more streamlined version would be thinner and waste less airspace.

Probably just the shadows or lighting but it looks like a different color metal or material from the brushed stainless lugs. But with a better photographer they should have detailed the side texture better. And also not show the date window improperly centered.

As far as I'm concerned it's either in-house mechanical or just go quartz. Powermatic 80, Sellita SW200, whatever the fuck the Soprod is called are just copes for not being able to get an interesting movement.

I don't even have a watch with an in-house movement, the epiphany came to me when the PRX was offered with a Powermatic 80 for twice the price of the Quartz which offered
>Less accuracy
>Less power reserve
>Less durability
>Equally mass produced and soulless movement
>Would still throw the movement out rather than bother servicing or repairing if broken
>Thicker and heavier

I appreciate not every watch with an ETA clone or Seiko NH35 would suddenly become half price if they had a Quartz option, but I would absolutely take the Quartz version if offered.

The problem is tissot will have moved past the powermatic 80 in 10 or so years, after 20 or 30 the stocks will be depleted. Unless you pay out the ass for a very skilled watchmaker with proprietary tools to service it, the watch wont last beyond then.

A watch with a sellita or eta however can be serviced regularly on the cheap, and replacement parts will be produced for at least the next 50 years due to the sheer number of watches that use them, or derivatives of them.

It doesnt matter to most people, but if you want to pass a watch down to your grandson and don't want to pay rolex money, an sw200 or 2824 is your best bet

The 3rd party movements make a relatively inexpensive watch pretty goddamn expensive if you intend to keep and service it long term, for such soulless movements I just don't get why you'd opt for that expense and inconvenience over a Quartz which is the superior timekeeping technology really.

I get it with more expensive watches with in-house movements because they're often trying to be unique, or beautiful, or stupendously complex but for "workhorse" mechanical movements I just don't get it anymore.

When you said "gold" did you mean "gold-tone"?

Bulova lunar pilot pretty based. Citizen chronos are cool (just basic quartz shit desu there are some nothing stands out) but for actual automatic chronos you can get the chink seagull special which is actually based looking.

Any recommended white dial watches? I don't have a dress piece or a white dial watch and I could do both but I don't really ever dress up so probably don't need it, but I do want a white dial watch. This looks cool and I was going to visit Frankfurt during covid and never got the chance so this is a cope

Both are rather bland, but between the 2: Explorer.

Diver's watches just scream "I'M A HUGE FUCKING DORK" no matter who made the watch.

I make $170k and should be hitting $200k this year. What level do I have to be to own a gold watch? Do I need to found a successful business or pimp out children?

Let me get this straight.

You’re closing on on making 200k a year yet you’ve only managed to save half your yearly salary? I’m guessing you’re including some bullshit like your car’s value in that NW estimation too. Get your finances in order before you mindlessly consoom.

Making that salary, I’d expect you to have half a mil in retirement/stock portfolios alone by 30.

I had to pay off my wife’s student loans and 2 car loans. All I’m counting into my net worth is our retirement accounts and checking accounts. No debt

I meant her student loans, and then our 2 car loans. She didn’t have 2 car loans. I bought her a car and myself one
