What's an upgrade from Paco Rabanne Pour Homme?

I picked up a bottle of this recently and really like it. I can';t help thinking though that it's been out for 50 years, so someone must have taken the same formula and made an even better version? I don't know shit about perfumery, but I want to buy my friend a bottle of perfume for his birthday. He said he wants something masculine, preferably a "woody" scent. I'd like to get him something more on the unique side, something that he's unlikely to see anyone else use out in the general public.

Don't worry, buying a fragrance for someone else is safe and nothing can go wrong. It's the same as blind-buying for yourself. You spend money, the fragrance arrives, you hate it, the money is wasted. It would have been better to have been able to know that beforehand, wouldn't it? Just buy what you feel like is right, and don't choose Bleu de Chanel Parfum, which would be "woody" and "probably liked by your friend" when you can choose Wonderwood instead, which is "woody" and "unique because by the time people leave the house the smell is already gone so you will never smell anybody else wearing it".

LADDM, Secretions Magnifiques and Maai are the only ones of which I don't know of a store where I could test them like right now. Here in the north of Spain those are quite hard to test unless I drive to a specific city nearby, and I would pay more for the gas and highway toll than what I paid for the samples.

Also, for these niche fragances I prefer to have a sample and be able to test them for a few days in different conditions, way more convenient and realistic and to be honest, way more fun.

Not to mention that for something like interlude, a 2ml tester can last me for months.

yep, lots of green woody scents out there. the most forest-like I've had was probably Kaszebsczi Mech by that one Polish niche perfumer, but I think it sold out. that had a very "forest floor" feel with all the moss
other than that, most Vetiver based scents are green, woody and earthy to some degree. Grey Vetiver, Terre d'Hermes and especially Guerlain Vetiver. Encre Noire is a pretty good cheaper pick as well
there are also some fragrances with coniferous notes if you prefer pine forests

Kind of, but my thoughts are very unorganized and I also have no idea what I'm talking about, because I got into fragrance like a month ago when I came to the thread and I got my Encre Noire. I'm starting this excel with comments on things I've tried, color coded by what I thought was best. You can read it if you'd like. I'm still too overwhelmed though, and I'll just narrow it down to the ones I liked in the next several days. I'll just wear one daily and see how it goes. Other than these I've tried some Guerlain at the mall. Ones I liked were Santal Royal, Mythique, and Heritage I think it was called, but from memory I think these are better. Might be biased and/or retarded though. Also, personal opinions etc.

Now the issue I have is that I wanted to buy one and only one, but now I'm confused on which one I like the most.

tl;dr: went into it thinking Noir will be it, but Terror might be the best, although Noir has that ink note, Duke and Rake are also top tier

>>17457983
>oh right so what do you prefer? smelling like fucking food? like water? grass?
You're saying these things facetiously but how are these anymore bizarre to smell like than wood or leather. You could pick almost anything that doesn't smell offensive and put it in the same category as wood and leather. That category being "random thing in my household that doesn't particularly smell great". Hold on let me spray myself with "Tom Ford ceiling fan" or "Dior kitchen sink". Fuck you.

>> No.17458005

>>17457986
Also right now my benchmark for what I think is good is Encre Noire, and for what normalfags think is good is Sauvage. Gotta go to the mall and try Sauvage to see how it compares to these, because some of them many people might not like, I don't know.

>> No.17458013

most people love the smell of wood or the forest though. leather is a bit more divisive, but still pleasant for most people

Now in fairness I might be jumping the gun regarding the wood fragrances but after smelling a leather fragrance I can safely say it's not for me. It really does smell like a car. It's so effectively reminiscent of a car seat that I know anyone who smells me is going to think of a car seat. You've really gotta be a specific kind of person to pull it off. I'll stay open minded on the wood fragrances but I think if I asked a thousand people to think of something natural that they thought smelled good then very few would say wood. Maybe they'd say forest but that's a lot of things besides wood.

>> No.17458033

>>17458029
fair enough, it's definitely not for everyone. I'll say that the "really in your face realistic leather" part of the smell passes pretty quickly on my skin and there's other stuff going on later too, just smelling the opening isn't really enough to judge a whole fragrance
as for wood frags, usually the wood is mixed with other stuff and many of the most popular, easiest to like fragrance use a pretty big amount of some woody smelling substances. Blue de Chanel, Terre d'Hermes, Dior Homme 2020, all heavy on the wood

>> No.17458035

>>17458029
People's reception to fragrance can vary pretty heavily depending on their early developmental impressions and memories. Someone who grew up with fond impressions of cars and saddlery would be a lot more receptive to leather frags. I guess a lot of the reason leather's specifically a popular accord is the conjured image of a leather-wearing american badass figure, which definitely isnt for everyone.

For example, I have very fond early memories of cars and garages and Fahrenheit is one of my favourote frags. Definitely isnt for everyone, but for some its amazing.

Im surprised that Bleu De Chanel is considered woody but I suppose I never considered that, because it smells so overwhelmingly like a shower gel I used to use as a teenager and how could a shower gel be related to wood. I suppose these are the misguided inferences one might make subconsciously. I'm actually wearing the Parfum of BDC right now which I personally find to be an entirely different beast, maybe a little bit woody unless I'm just imagining that now because you suggested it.

Your mom has good taste, that's a very solid frag and perfect for a signature.Honestly having a signature scent is the smartest thing you can do. People begin to associate you with your smell and it builds a strong connection in their mind. Perfumery is kind of a shit hobby because it's expensive, but the biggest kicker is that you become nose blind to your scent after awhile. So you keep buying more and more and more then you end up with 50 frags that you could never finish in your lifetime, and there's always a new and exciting frag on the horizon to consume. So that being said if you want to get into the game definitely buy samples and if you REALLY love something buy a bottle. Maybe someone else will chime in for the best place to buy samples, I usually buy from ebay.

As far as the vanilla I just recently got pic related and it's absolutely insane how good it smells to me. People say it's the best PDM Layton clone. I can understand the hype I absolutely love it.
