Seiko, Citizen, Omega, Heuer, all the brands that survived have very little lemons from that period. Also stuff that has ETA, Venus and Valjoux movements. AS movements are good too, but they were put in a lot of cheap basic shitters.

Avoid the very first auto-chronos though. They all have their own issues. Reliable auto-chronos started with the Valjoux 7750 (pic).

Same. I've always wanted to try and restore a mechanical too. Get a vintage non-runner from ebay, disassemble it, clean it, lube it, and reassemble it. But then you look at all the tools you might need: cannon pinion remover, robur press, mainspring winders, maybe a degausser. Too bad there aren't places where you can just go in and pay to use some watch tools.

Those are both things I really liked about it. There was only one around in a store in my area so I bought it even thought the dial/chapter ring alignment wasn't perfect. I knew I was going to end up opening the thing to regulate it at some point anyway, so I just fixed the alignment on mine while I had it open. I probably should get it pressure tested, but I have enough experience with greasing and screwing in casebacks properly that I'm not really worried about it.

Seiko really needs to get on their alignment issues though, I shouldn't have to fix crap like that on a brand new watch. I wouldn't have bought it at all if I didn't know i could fix it myself.

TAG went all in on pandering to normies who know nothing about watches using marketing to get them into the store so they could flog them wildly overpriced shitters with generic cheap movements in them. Their modern designs are all designed to appeal to normie aesthetic tastes in watches, also.

This makes them a brand with essentially zero modern horological value outside of their re-issues of vintage designs from before Heuer was ruined.

Are Seiko 5's decent movements? Seems like I read on another /wt/ they were cheap and would usually be off by about 30 seconds a day. I was hoping to find another affordable automatic daily with a minimalistic or classic/vintage look to it. I really hate busy and cluttered dials, and dials that remind you at the 4 position its either 4, 1600, or whatever other nonsense around the face and bezel. I dunno, I've been spending a lot recently on guns, big chunks toward the house (over $10k), holiday spending, and other bullshit. Just kinda have that itch for a new knife, watch, and flashlight kinda kick. Ideally I'd like around $100 but I know that doesn't really get you much especially when it should look good to non-watch people. So I guess under $250 realistically and even then I'm going to hesitate to buy since the difference between $150 and $250 watches is practically minimal.

Amazon is nearly unusable to browse for shit anymore (not just watches) as it starts recommending clearly chinese knockoffs with hundreds of fake reviews. This came up on page 1 when I was searching for "Seiko KS". Looks like amazon is droping the high resolution images but they actually photographed at least 3 different watches, and still have typo errors on the face. Its hard to see but in another closeup of this watch it says "SUPERLAFIVE CHRCEOMETET officlalcy certified". (thats not my typo, its whats on the watch face) What the fuck is this algorithm?

Don't look for Seiko KS models. Seiko's King Seiko line mostly existed in the 1960s and 1970s and you aren't in the market for a vintage watch. Seiko makes 1 re-issue of the original King Seiko design today, but it's catastrophically overpriced and frankly an insult to the original King Seiko line, so ignore it.

Oh, do you specifically want a mechanical? If you don't mind quartz, will it bother you if the second hand doesn't hit the minute markers exactly? That would give you way more options in the $150 to $250 range. If not, at least I can narrow down your options.

I kinda am since I generally like the look of many of them, the hard part is finding one that is decent, runs well, and isn't $500 because "vintage".

It doesn't have to be mechanical, but considering the prices I'm looking at I generally look for it. I saw a couple Citizen watches that I kinda liked but for how inexpensive quartz movements are, I don't want to be paying extra just because of the brand.
>will it bother you if the second hand doesn't hit the minute markers exactly?
yes, explicitly yes. I have a timex that the second hand doesn't stop on the second markers exactly and it makes me never want to replace the battery once it dies.

The problem with vintage watches is that if you aren't willing to do a fair bit of research into the model(s) you are interested in, to the point of being able to trust yourself to judge condition, originality, and value, you're almost certain to get ripped off. Plus you need to be able to find a reliable independent watchmaker to service them and that costs money.

For someone just getting into mechanical watches I would strongly recommend avoiding vintage watches.

Shit, wait, I just thought of the perfect watch for you. Based on what you are looking for, you need an Escapement Time VH31 watch It's a Chinese Ali-Express watch but it's actually an amazing value for the price, looks like a vintage King Seiko, uses a quartz movement that ticks 4 times a second so you don't have to worry about it hitting the markers exactly, and is available in both 35mm (historically correct size) or 40mm (oversized modern look). It's under $100 US.

Yes, because the band on the band on the w86 is enormously better than the band on the f91. The w86's band is much more rubber like than the resin bands of the f91, w59, and f105. The w86 also has an electrolumenescent backlight so you can actually read it in the dark.

>The movement from the case back looks very nice as well
The movement it's a copy of was designed in the 1940s when robustness and ease of manufacturing were not as high priorities, so mechanical chronograph movements from that era were often quite pretty.

One of it's design contemporaries was the legendary Lemania 2310, which went on to be used as the Omega Calibre 321, and then also formed the basis for the Patek 27-70 and Vacheron Constantin 1141, not to mention the gorgeous modern Omega 321 remake. That era was basically the peak of classical manually wound low beat chronograph design.

Not what I asked, but titanium is usually a neutral material too. But brass, nickel, and zinc are cheap and easy to machine or stamp into place even. Stainless is usually put on the back of the watch because thats what comes in contact with your sweaty corrosive skin.

Try stainless or titanium, thats pretty much it unless you get a gold plated back which isn't likely to happen. Your alternative is getting those giant leather bracer type bands so its just leather in contact with your skin.

Tissot visodate is a beautiful watch. It’s 650 but is not a dive or pilot watch. Sapphire in front and back, day/date complication, versatile and can be dressed up or down, and the powermatic 80 movement is decent. I wear it as my daily and anyone who sees it stops and makes a point to ask about it.
