/btg/ - TWO TONE BOOTS EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and don't wear them daily for too long

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

Here to bitch about my AE experience recently.

Got a pair of Chapmans, returned them because of shitty dye spots. Returning picrel, my second pair, due to loose grain and the fucking heel coming off after like half a day of wear. Super pissed, I wish I wasn't poor so I could just get other nice looking boots.

different hides crease differently. just the way the creasing lottery goes. if it's actual loose grain it will feel soft like you can poke your finger through it if you tried and you can pinch it between your fingers and feel the layers separating
mostly people here (and reddit) see wide creasing and freak out but 9/10 it's just ugly creasing.
my indy boots have beautiful tight creases on one boot and the other looks like your pic. it's not loose grain, i just got unlucky with that boot
also different leathers crease differently. there is not one uniform creasing for all leathers.

its clear most of the effort is going into the local spanish leathers and not the cf.seidel leathered boots but the local leathers aren't interesting
i think with the move shipping th cf/american leathers is too expensive and it would push the brand into the $450 no mans land if he continues as he was so they have to use the cheaper no name stuff and subsidise the high end leather runs down to the $410 mark

They guarantee it for life. If a stitch pops 10 years down the line you can send it to Ashland and they will repair it with new materials (keeping it as original as they can) for free. So it's hopefully the last wallet I'll ever buy, as long as the company sticks around. But it is quite a lot for a wallet. They have cheaper options, though.

I mean I wouldn’t be against using the same wallet for a long time but things change. For example I used to use a trifold I had for a very long time, but I was also working a job where I dealt with cash. After leaving I got a small card holder I used for a few years. After getting a couple credit cards I got a slightly larger organized card holder.
I like using the same wallet for long periods of time but it isn’t always feasible.

The heel cup is actually big enough too. >>17434299
I bought my mister Lou’s from Bakers and followed the suggested sizing of going 0.5 down from the brannock and up one width. The entire boot fits perfect, but the geometry of the heel is just too short. I’ve had the boots for almost three months and the insole has broken in probably the most it ever will and the top of the heel cup still sits at about 3/4 up the entire height of my heel resulting in too much friction when I walk more than a mile. I really think it’s just a matter of their heel geometry since when I set them next to my lofgrens, the lofgrens in comparison have a slightly larger heel in terms of width and height

I would say with confidence that the width of the lofgrens rests towards a larger D width that almost borders an E. The more limiting factor in terms of its dimensions is the pass through, especially where the bottom buckle is located. I have a very normal D width foot with a normal instep height, and my first pull on with the lofgrens required about 1 minute of effort to pop them into the boot. I have my eyes on the TLB "comfort collection" for summer.
These are all loafers - blake stitched, white sneaker soles, suede uppers.

I know TLB craftsmanship is top tier. I just need to confirm their suede is CF Stead like their normal dress shoes.

Carmina might have some RTW with rubber soles (obviously not dainite because it's terrible).
Otherwise just MTO, you can put ridgeways on them no problem. But it takes 2 months.

Fastest MTO I know of is TLB, took about 2 weeks for mine. But their only grippy soles are the "city" soles, nothing like half lugs and ridgeways and the like.

I own one pair of Thursday boots and admittedly it was a pain in the ass getting them right. First pair was jacked up, returned for a new one, they are ok.
The only reason I mentioned them is for $200 there aren't many decent good year welted boots, especially once you get outside of workwear. I used Amazon so the return and exchange was fast as fuck, i had everything sorted in less than a week.

So for someone who's new to the game and doesn't know all the brands, I don't think Thursday is a terrible option if you order through Amazon.

But I think Grant Stone is a waaaaay better choice, for double the money you a boot that easily beats Allen Edmonds in quality and ties with Alden. Their customer

eBay is a godsend if you know your size in a brand and know a little about how to fix scrapes and scuffs.

Allen Edmonds Park Avenue, grand total $99. No deep scrapes or scuffs, relatively new sole as well.

If you're in a rush and need something specific eBay is a pain in the ass. But if you keep an eye on it and check every few days you're going to come across absolute steals. Great if you're starting out and looking to experiment on what works for you

If you're not experienced buying used can be risky.

You can get lucky and get a $400 pair of boots for $100, or you can drop $100 and have a pair of shoes that doesn't fit and you can't return.

If you're patient and know what to look for then I strongly recommend buying on eBay.

AE is easy to buy on eBay if you can go try them on first in an AE store or Nordstrom.

I've bought used a couple times in the past, but they were Red Wings and Wolverines, two boot brands I already owned previously and were fitted for, so I knew exactly what to look for.
Mybiggest problem is width, I'm on the edge of 9D at the lower end of 9E. All of my wolverine and Red Wing shoes/boots fit great in a D, meanwhile I own tennis shoes and dress shoes that barely fit in E.
I would love to try AEs or Grant stones but I've never had one on my foot, nor do I know a place to go try them on unless I do something scummy like buy them online, try them, and return them the same day just so I can go ebay sniping.

Ok, I think I can help here.

I'm between a 12D and 12E. My New Balance are all E, my other dress shoes from Cole Haan, Clark's and Florsheim are w. In AE dress shoes I'm a 12E. I can do a 12D in them but there's a break in period of a couple wears that's mildly uncomfortable.

All my AE boots are 12D. I've got Dalton, Patton, Freeport and now Park Avenue. Freeport is absolutely perfect, just a really comfortable boot. Patton and Park Avenue are great too. Dalton is a little snug. Not uncomfortable, it broke in ok and now it's fine. I think if I had to do it again I'd get a E in my Dalton's because I can't wear thick socks in them now.

Grant Stone is half size large. So I'm an 11.5, but I've had to get an 11.5D and an 11.5E in the same last because the types of leather they used were very different.
But their customer service is very easy to deal with, the return service is automatic so you don't have to talk to anyone and you don't pay return shipping. If you have to make an exchange, it's fast. I'd say start with a 9E from them.

Tldr: AE boots for me are pretty TTS and normally cut pretty generously even though I have to take an E in their dress shoes.
