I personally am on the skinner side and I sometimes get pants that are a little larger in the waist at times and it has a comfy billowy feel to it. Tucking sweaters only works when you have looser pants, especially higher waisted ones. In modern slim fit or lower waisted pants it just doesn't work. I've tried it both ways and it can be nice especially in the winter as a casual thing that keeps you insulated when you're moving around a lot instead of getting drafts in the opening between the sweater and pants. Nothing too formal though.

I bought a wool overcoat second hand, basically unused, in what was supposed to be my size, but it's huge! The shoulders are quite robust, but I fill it out enough for them to not look silly, more like those Armani ads from the late 80s - early 90s. I wouldn't have assumed the coat is quite that old, but the cut/fit does strike me as having more in common with that era than the form-fitting coats of the last decade. Like another guy in this thread, I am thinking about getting a diver watch, though I'll be going with a black bezel one. I want to get a NATO strap for it. Is it customary to get one that matches a belt you have? Because while I own several leather dress belts, I also have a canvas belt, navy blue with white stripes. This is my go-to casual belt when I'm wearing casual shoes such as boat shoes or sneakers, and/or when I'm wearing shorts. I intend for this to be my "casual watch", as I only own dress watches at the moment. Do I need a NATO strap that matches my belt or does that matter/would it be too "matchy-matchy"? Because I kind of want to get one with a red stripe, but don't want to clash.

>It's a 100% wool miUSA glen check, so still a good find.
None of that makes it a particularly good find. Quality is probably more dependent on the brand than on country of origin, especially with padded and canvased jackets; and wool is nothing to brag about when it's only a sort of fiber in this instance. You might have no idea whether it's expensive wool or cheap wool. And what's with the jeans?

Anyway, good luck with getting everything tailored. I hope it works out. But maybe don't buy things on that basis. I had a bad MIUSA Harris Tweed jacket once. What a waste of $30.

I understand that the latter two knots are larger, so they're good for adding bulk to a tie made of thin material. But what about a wide tie made of thicker material? Does that call for a larger knot to balance it or a smaller knot to offset it?

Yes, I bought a white trim fit OCBD from them last summer. Ultimately it was a mistake because I ordered one sleeve length too short and I've been working out like a fiend and now the neck is too small for me. There was PLENTY of room in the back, If I had cared more I would have taken it to a tailor to take even more off to better match my thinner frame. For thinner people it seems like you need to take shirts to a tailor regardless of what's advertised, in my (albeit limited) experience there always just seems to be an excess of fabric.

Just got a pair of medium grey trousers & a pair of charcoal grey flannel trousers. The flannel ones are much darker than I had anticipated which is fine, but if leaves me wondering if I should also get a pair of medium grey flannel trousers or if the grey ones I already have will fill the role of a flannel trouser just as well? I will be wearing both in business casual settings and outings, but I feel like flannel trousers go better with fair isle sweaters and herringbone / checked tweed sport coats whereas the other wool trousers would go better with traditional solid color sport coats and blazers. Is two pairs of flannel trousers in similar colors necessary for kino pair-ability?

I may be going to a summer wedding (more casual BBQ at an airport) and was looking at getting a nice blue blazer I could wear later on so probably no brass or pearl buttons. Ill prob wear light grey or off white pants and tobacco suede chukkas and a white or bengal stripe cotton shirt and tie. Are patch pockets the standard or are flap pockets more traditional/versitile? They are more formal I think

I want a light wool, serge or hopsack without shitty poly material that is versatile for all seasons and wont boil me outside but still good for the fall and spring. I already checked GG and they reviewed like 20 brands and most sucked. I might go with Spier and Mackay as I bought a lot of casual clothes there

Main question: do I buy a good quality one a few months before? Im a 42or 44R but working on losing weight. Is it just the shoulders I need to get right and the sleve and waist and be taken in or out depending on my weight?

How many pair of trousers is optimal to have in your wardrobe?

I'm starting to stockpile around 10 pairs because I've been upgrading the quality gradually, and needed different types for different seasons.

I feel like trousers are some of the most hard pieces to find, especially regarding fit, as I find a lot of trousers are either slimfit or wide as fuck. I did find some great pleated linen chinos while on holiday in Italy this summer though, the brand was called Gutteridge. I'm pretty happy with them, anyone here know the brand?

I currently have:
For summer
>brown and navy pleated linen chinos (Gutteridge)
>white and beige cotton chinos (RL)
For winter
>navy and dark grey suit pants (Oscar Jacobson, super 100s)
>mall tier quality chinos in olive and navy (got them for practically nothing and I was desperate for something to wear as it got cold and I couldn't find anything decent)
>Jeans (Hugo Boss)

Any feedback? What does your trouser collection look like? How do you go about finding pieces you like?

>are jeans prep?
Speaking from a traditional perspective, my rule of thumb is: no no-button t-shirts.
Jeans were invented in 1800s or something so I'd consider them traditional.
They were clothing for the peasantry though, keep that in mind.

>Which jeans should I get?
I personally like Uniqlo Selvedge. It's 100% cotton.
Then again, I only wear jeans in a very casual sense; they were invented for function over form and I treat them as such.

Not him but any loafers would do, in my opinion, they are a casual type of shoe.
You could even go with boots.

Basically, jeans are what people used to wear to work (say, farming or factory), wear what they would have worn to such occupations (keeping in mind I'm talking about the late 1800s).

They aren't inherently prep, but they can have a place in a preppy/classic menswear wardrobe. I suggest sticking to heritage American brands like Levi's, Lee, or Wrangler, with which jeans originated. Go for their more classic models, nothing skinny/low rise, but nothing too "dad jean" baggy, either. Dark or medium wash blue. From Levi's, the 501 or 505. From Wrangler, the Cowboy Cut. From Lee, the 101z Rider. Classic blue is best to start with, but tan and white have their place. In the 60s, tan jeans were popular with Ivy League and other college students, back then they were called "wheat jeans." Five pocket corduroys are good too. There are a few ways to style jeans and look classic. One is the rugged outdoorsy look, tartan flannel shirt, bean boots, maybe a jean jacket as well. Avoid looking like a redditor by being clean shaven and having your hair combed. Another choice is the "Take Ivy" inspired look, which calls for peg rolled jeans (blue or tan) with a tucked in OCBD, a sweater if it's chilly, white socks, and penny loafers.

Yes. The sockless look is a popular TIP thing because it makes it look like you're perpetually at a fancy resort or something, but socks can be worn with loafers. White tube socks with penny loafers is a classic casual look, for when you would normally go sockless, but it's too cold out to do so. Dress socks, solid or patterned, can be worn for a business casual look, and definitely should be worn anytime you're wearing loafers and wearing a tie (be it with a suit or a blazer)

I'm having a distinct Americentric problem right now where I go to work and I see people who are relatively fit and trim wearing what is basically PJs with sandals/sometimes Nikes and a T-shirt. Sometimes poofy jackets and jeans if I'm lucky.
At the end of the day, they are still my co-workers and absolutely mogging them would make me look like a stuck-up fuck, and that wouldn't end well for my prospects of a peaceful workplace. If it were a cutthroat environment and I were competing with these people for limited openings, that would be a different story, but I'm not and it's not that kind of work environment.

What shoes go best with a tan suit? I feel like brown wingtips, tan bucks, and brown and white spectator shoes could all work, but which would look best?

Haggar, and Alimens & Gentle make decent cheap ones.

Hey /tip/
I was told by an acquaintance that these SAS shoes are the ugliest shoes she had ever seen in her life. I didn't quite get it, because I've had two pairs of these and worn them to death. But apparently they are the definitive ugly dad shoe.
Suggestions on what I should replace them with? I'll still wear them, but definitely not to work anymore if they're that much of an ugly dad shoe.

Replacing the laces, with cotton ones, would be a good start; those laces are indeed horrendous looking (even the shoe itself is just meh).

Replace them with these or something like it.

Yeah, that's a very American thing, I have noticed.
In Europe and my country (or just in my country, at the very least), bettering yourself wouldn't really be percieved as 'mogging' others (unless your personality is already known to be that sort).
Exempli gratia: people sometimes compliment me, when they see me in my chinos and sport-coat, at the grocery.

The way I have always viewd it: wearing nice clothes is also for the benefit of those around you, since they get to look at something nice.

Those are nice shoes.
Get them, if you like them.

If you're looking for the exact style of your SAS shoes, they are very similar to a 'boat shoe'.

Thanks anon. The boat shoe is something I'm also considering but it would probably look kind of tryhard outside of summer, right?

I'm looking to get a burgundy knit tie. Square end, not grenadine but the sock style of knit tie. Now I'm looking at a couple. One has a small YSL logo embroidered in white, and the other is plain but a bit more expensive. Only a couple dollars, though.

I almost like the look of the YSL logo since it's very small and I like the way the white contrasts against the burgundy of the tie, but some part of me thinks it's a bit tacky. Bear in mind I'm not trying to be super tippy anyway, I'm gonna wear it with a banana republic oxford shirt and a worn out old varsity jacket, so it's not like I was gonna larp as old money anyway.

nevertheless I'd like some input on this. what do you think of a small logo? Am I better off without it? I will admit even if it looks worse normies somehow seem to like outfits better when they see brands and to some extent that'd be worth something to me. Not a great reason, I know...

Maybe.
I know somebody who wears them all-year round though, it's like their version of runners for normals.
It wouldn't be too out of place in Spring either, depending on how warm it get wherever you are.

Looks good; I've never had chromexcel leather so I can't say anything from personal experience but it sounds good.
The bright sole definitely gives it an informal air, wouldn't be suitable for a wedding but a modern workplace might be okay with it.
