/btg/ - SHELL ENGINEERS EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and don't wear them daily for too long

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

That's the one I think I darkened too much on. It has been like this for a while and idk how to fix. I'm not sure if adding oil to it would help, because that would just darken it even more. I don't want to darken the right to look like it, because I don't like how it looks to begin with.

It was actually like this a bit before I tried cleaning it. I had thought maybe the previous work I did with soap had gotten into it, so I tried saddle soap. Nothing. Still the same textureless look as before. It gets stark white creases if I attempt to use them like normal unlike the right boot.

Those are Wolverine 1000 miles. When I copped them, they looked like this:
I didn't notice it at the time when I bought it, but the left boot was pre-darkened by the time I got it. Which is fine, I assumed it would work itself out, and that patina was top-notch. But then I started using them, and the patina faded away.

It's a shame because they are, far and away, my favorite boots to wear. Sure, they're cheap, but damn they're comfy.

Some conditioners, even if tgey don't have mink oil, will darken the leather to a degree. Just recently I used the same conditioner on three pairs of shoes; one didn't change color at all, another darkened a little and the last one darkened a lot. I beleive it depends on the type of leather and how damaged or how long it's been since it's got proper treatment. The more damaged or cheaper, tge more it'll darken.

I would just cobdition the other boot to even out things if I were you, then see how they change as ypu wear them. They should regain ther original color, or very close to, with time and wearing.

I'm asking this here because you guys know your shit about footwear. My wardrobe is fairly smart casual. I've recently acquired a dark brown tweed sport coat and am trying to find shoes/boots with which to pair it. I wear mostly earthy colored chinos with the occasional dark blue/indigo jeans.

How much of a faux pas is it to pair medium brown shoes/boots with a dark brown sport coat? I've always heard the top should be darker than the bottom as a general guideline. Pic is similar to what I have atm.

Shell is not a leather, it's a membrane from a horse's arse (more like lower back).

It is very difficult to produce, basically only one tannery in the world does it right (Horween in Chicago) and one more comes a distant second (Shinki Hikaku in Japan). All the rest are not worth considering.

Each horse only yields enough for like 2 pairs of footwear if you are lucky.

As if that wasn't bad enough already, it is also very difficult to work with. Very few shoemakers can use shell properly, because (among other issues) it has a tendency to snap when pulled, and making shoes requires pulling the leather over the last very hard.
For example Carmina says that for a specific boot model, they break on average 2 hides before successfully making the third. They stopped offering this model eventually.

So is it any good? I have a pair of boots in shell cordovan, and I am happy that I own one of my grail items, but honestly it's not very good.
It's a little rigid and inflexible. It does not crease, but it wrinkles in a unique way that makes it stand out. It's very shiny and changes color depending on the light, which also makes it stand out. In terms of scratches and scuffs, it feels almost impervious to such things. I have never worn them in the rain, they are completely waterproof because shell is non-porous (another unique quality) but they are known to get rain spots especially on lighter shell colors (mine are dark).

If you're getting paramemes make sure to either get old used originals, or SteinKOGLER brand ones, not SteinADLER fakes. You can search for "Steinkogler Feldschuh leicht 3851". For French rangers is the same thing, except the most commonly found good ones brand new currently are Argueyrolles and I think the other one was Marbott or something. There's a third quality supplier I forgot the name of, but the rest are lemons.

not necessarily. they just use a really soft, flexible rubber at a lower thickness than danite so the edge works itself away from the midsole quickly. once its unstuck it really only takes a few missteps to chew up the section in front of the stiching. I suspect that's why you'll see a lot of recessed commando soles getting thicker towards the toe
the toplift coming off is basically down to thickness again plus I think they nail inside out instead of outside in so the toplift is likely only held on by glue

If you like the style there's nothing wrong with it, except two things
1) lack of eyelets. you may never notice, but to me it looks wrong on a derby boot
3) dainite. a deal breaker for me, but other people are ok with it. To me, dainite ruins any footwear. It is uncomfortable and dangerous.

when you want a boot that needs a large uninterrupted sections you'll have to cough up good money because you're fucking up the hide more than if they cut smaller sections for smaller boots and if they're worth thier salt they're skipping bad sections of the hide

I saw a video from Nick's boots on Instagram recently and they just a had machine cutting sections from a metal pattern being pressed on them, and it looked like they were just trying to maximize the amount they can get out of the hide without a care in the world about quality.

Seemed very odd to me, European makers at this price point will always try to click the hide to select specific pristine pieces for critical areas like the vamp.

Collection so far, pic is too big to post because the size limit is retard

Starting from the top row
Dan Post Milwaukee Black Cherry, Florsheim Duke

Allen Edmonds Patton, Grant Stone Diesel in Kudu

Allen Edmonds Freeport Chromexcel, Allen Edmonds Dalton

Clark's in Beeswax

Got a pair of Grant Stone Diesels in Navy Chromexcel coming next week. After that I want to get a pair of boots in Color No 8, and I need a good pair of black boots so I'll look into Alden next

Comfort wise the Dan Post and Grant Stone are tied for first with the Freeports a close second.

Second pic is a close up of the Kudu , really love the texture. Great casual boot, works well with black jeans and pants.

You can not get a new, good looking "convincing" suit that's quality for that price and you're delusional if you think otherwise.
Sure with eBay and tailoring and sales, maybe. But by that logic, you can do the same with boots.

Basically if I have $400 I can get a pair of boots right now that fits great, looks great, and will last a life time. I can't make that claim for $400 suit

you may as well bring a tea set with you.
There is a good reason that no serious hiker would ever do that. But if you want to sweat horribly in your peacoat with synthetic liner and your shirt and your sweater and your plusfours and kill your feet with your farmer's boots, then ok. You can do all that if that will make you feel like whatever you're larping as. Otherwise, you could be comfortable wearing hiking shoes, a merino wool shirt, a windbreaker, and hiking pants, maybe with long johns if it is nippy outside, and this way it would weigh less and let you move more. I don't know.

But hey, they climbed Mt. Everest with leather boots, right? I bet they loved wearing those. Nevermind that those were actual hiking boots to begin with while yours aren't.

I really dig the look and feel of my Grant Stones, I've got a pair of Diesels in Grey Kudu and a pair in Navy Chromexcel coming this week. They quality is excellent and I sort of prefer them to my Allen Edmonds. Something about the style and fit of GS boots just does it for me but I thought maybe I should diversify my collection, try other brands, etc. But I'm probably going to get the Brass boot in black Chromexcel. I know the fit is perfect for my foot, I like the style, sort of reminds me of Alden and the construction on my boots is fantastic.I was really worried buying boots made in China but clearly they are using a different style/factory/process because the finished product is great.

nta but I know some stuff about hiking as I've been doing that on the Alps since I was little. There are plenty of good hiking boots under 200 eur. But when I talk about hiking boots, I talk about alpine style, cemented boots that aren't exactly fashionable and I wouldn't wear them casually- but they are the best, comfiest boots you can wear in the wild. The comfiest pair of boots I own are probably my old hiking Lowa zephyr, together with my nike SFB but those are sneakers with a shaft more than boots so they don't really count.

And speaking of that, I actually just received my new hiking boots today, replacing my old zephyrs that lasted me like 13 years in every condition. Trying with a different Lowa model now, pic rel, first impressions are good.

also, if for some reason you're kinda autistic and don't want cemented construction despite it being optimal for mountaineering, iirc Hanwag might still have some double stitched, plainer looking good hiking leather boots in their line- but they're obviously going to cost more than 200 eur. Otherwise I can suggest you to check out brands like Lowa, Scarpa, Meindl, Lasportiva, Asolo to name a few. I’d go with CRT. Personally I have the Muleskinners but that’s because I already have CRT blacksmiths. Both are great but the CRT is more versatile imo. Also Amber Harness looks nice but I like the color variation of CRT.

I’m sure it’d be great to get some really nice dubarrys but I just can’t justify it being a city slicker. The Dublin boots just seem the best price to quality ratio for country boots(unless you guys know anything).

Look at cheaney tiger moth I think It's called. Shearling lined so winter only though.
Good English make. Based off WW2 pilot boots. Mid-calf height.
Not too expensive compared with the other Northamptonshire factories.

>danner mountain lights
>Ask a seasoned backpacker what the ideal hiking boots look like, and you're bound to hear a description of the Mountain Light. That's because for over 30 years, the Mountain Light set the standard for every new product that hit the market. And in all that time, nothing ever dethroned the original.
