I've seen plenty of posts on /fa/ over the years where people have said they got super positive responses to wearing Western Fashion.
What are some good Western brands? Always loved Westerns, did trail riding as a teen and love being /out/ and work outdoors doing Landscaping, so figured why not, I honestly can't find clothes that look Western anywhere though. What are some good hat tips as well? Stetson I see a lot recommend but that shit is expensive as fuck. Is Barmah good?

Just wear it and be confident. I work an office job (with a very lax dress code) and I wore my stetson, vintage noconas, and a suede coat into work the other day. As long as you're polite and know when to tip your hat you'll be fine.

Funny enough hats are the last thing you need and usually what crosses the line into costume territory. Average western fashion just means pairing some sort of rugged boots with denim, tucked in with a leather belt.

Depends on the fit and the maker. I agree, it looks cheap in that iteration.

Try to ignore that this pic is from a game but it's hard to lookup Western styles and not get results that are either formal dress or from a Clin eastwood movie. I think something like pairing grey chinos, dark brown boots, white or blue shirt and a beige or tan coat can look pretty western.

Just look for western stores, they seem to exist pretty much everywhere in North America. Not sure where you are in New England but there are Boot Barns in PA and NJ, might be worth the trip if you're not that far from there, and otherwise there's a good chance there's some independent western store around. Find one and go look at and try stuff in person. Brand doesn't really matter in western wear so don't worry too much about it.

As for hats, don't try to cheap out on them. Just forget about them for now, like >>17372469 says they're the hardest piece to pull off, and the cheaper the hat the more costumey it's likely to look. When you do get one it's a decent idea to start with a straw hat, you get a lot more bang for your buck there, but traditionally they're only for the warm parts of the year, while felt is only for colder weather.

>>17372454
IMO they're not gateway enough. My gateway boots were a pair of Ariat Heritage Ropers and I'd highly recommend a pair, they're comfortable, break in fast, reasonably priced, and with pants worn over them (which is how you should ALWAYS wear western boots unless you're an actual cowboy on the job) they just look like generic brown shoes if people aren't really scrutinizing them.

As for Filson, I wouldn't really consider them western, but they're definitely western-adjacent and wearable with western stuff. (And often sold in western stores.) IMO western is part of a larger category of styles that includes workwear, vintage-style outdoor gear, and even some milsurp, and can all be pretty freely mixed and matched and doing it right can help avoid looking too costumey.

East Texas anon here. Gonna post some ACTUAL western inspo, and not some Americana/1900's California-core. The biggest and most obvious key to wearing true western style is the boots. Straight up cowboy boots. There's different styles of them which I won't delve into now, but that's pretty much the main piece. Hats are optional and it's so easy to get into, you can get by with just a tshirt, jeans, and some boots with is typical attire here in Texas.

West Texas anon here agreed. If you live anywhere in the Southwest then it should be easy to get custom made boots too. As for hats usually folks wear straw in the summer and felt in the winter there are plenty of affordable options to get started with both boots and hats.

Depends on what you actually wear and how natural you can look in it. If you go way over the top and look like you walked out of a '50s western, or if you just look like too much of a pretty boy, then yeah maybe you'll get shit, but if you wear stuff that's more toned down and can look reasonably appropriate in it you can pull it off pretty much anywhere in the west or midwest, especially if you forego the hat and/or only wear it in situations where it makes sense. (Outdoor recreation/work, going to country bars, etc.) Age is a factor too, I think most guys are way more capable of pulling it off in their 30s than 20s.

I think it's also worth pointing out that the number one show on TV right now (Yellowstone) is a modern Western, so it's a good time for western wear and the show is a great source of inspo. Women love that shit too, especially older ones, so it's prime time to rock the cowboy shit if you're 30+ or into older women.

The big brands are going to be Cinch, Wrangler, Levi’s, Ariat for pants. Dan Post, Justin, Lucchese, Ariat, etc for boots. Wrangler, Levi’s, Stetson, Pendleton, Brother and Sons, Moonshine Spirit, Hooey, etc for tops. No particular order.
There are plenty more, but those are the stuff I’ve come across plenty.

As for the general fashion advice, what is going to feel most socially acceptable is going to be a simple shirt/jeans/boot combo. Make sure you buy longer jeans to wear with western boots. When sitting down, you shouldn’t be able to see the shaft of the boot. Do NOT wear with skinny jeans.
I am personally a fan of western graphic t-shirts, but I have a few pearl snap long sleeves that I bring out during the winter.
For boots, round toes are going to look more classic, square toes are more a southern thing. Punchy and snip toes I would reserve only for special events like rodeos or going to the country club.
You WILL feel like a larp if you immediately go down the road of belt buckles with tucked in shirt and cowboy hats. It takes a certain level of confidence to pull those off. Don’t do it immediately.

Get comfortable with general western wear first. Trucker caps make great substituties for a hat. A smaller belt buckle under an untucked shirt that shows sometimes is also ok.

If you do decide to get a cowboy hat: felt for the winter, straw for the summer, and don’t keep wearing it indoors. It is generally fine to go cheap on straw hats. Don’t go cheap on felt. Going cheap on felt is an easy way to look like you got it from the Halloween store.

Yeah, imo buckles are the hardest thing of all to pull off convincingly, and I think should be entirely avoided unless you've actually got some kind of cool personal connection or story behind them - traditionally that'd be winning one at a rodeo or maybe wearing one with your ranch's brand or whatever. I've been into western wear for a few years and have gotten to the point where I can pull off the tucked pearl snap and hat and stuff decently on the right occasion but I've yet to find a buckle that wouldn't either be larpy or tacky as fuck on me, and just wear a simple western belt with a traditional brass buckle instead.

Ironically it’s probably easier to pull off belt buckles in the south than the west. There isn't an established rodeo connotation with one in the south, and the big letter/country-style (think rebel flags, eagles, and deer) ones were popular there for a short time a while back, so it isn’t as weird.

What >>17378309 said. You can also go for straight cut or boot cut from the aforementioned brands. They’ll all generally have big enough openings to fit over a boot. They are made for it.
What is going to matter more here is the length. You are fine keeping the waist the same. Those jeans in pic are way too short though.

Keep with dark wash jeans if you want those boots to pop, which you probably want if you are going exotic. A light wash if you want them to blend in more.

They're entry-level boots, I wouldn't think the other anon is going to immediately start marching around in deep puddles or snow with his first pair. I don't know of anything in the price range that'd be better anyway, it'd have to be full leather construction and the cheapest decent quality ones like that I know of are close to double the price. Yeah some stacking with western boots is pretty inevitable if you want it to look good in every case. It isn’t impossible to find a pair which stacks just a little while at the same time looking fine when walking or sitting down though. The shaft of the boot does help smoothen out the lines somewhat. If you’ve already bought a pair of boots, the best way to know of course would be to go try on pants with them on.

Weirdly I've found that Hollister slim straight jeans wear really fucking well with western boots. They've got just the right ankle diameter to fit over them and the perfect length for a bit of stack if you go one size longer than you normally would. They're obviously lower rise than classic wranglers or whatever but that's fine with contemporary western wear, especially if you're going untucked. -Roundish/pointy toes, not overtly roundish neither ridiculously pointy. No square toes.
-Cuban/slanted heel
-Won't break bank (150-200)
-Brown or dark brown

something kinda like picrel.

I have the middle in blue. You can't tell it from your picture, but it's ridiculously oversized (see my pic for actual fit in your usual size). I went down 2 sizes, the arms were still too baggy and i'm a heavier built.

It's an interesting piece, not the usual sherpa everyone wears like the left. I didn't want to send it back, since i got it for 60% off, so i got the sleeves tailored for $8.

Either i have terrible luck with Levi's or their quality control is pretty bad, because one of the sleeves of this jacket was a good 5 cm wider than the other one. I have another Levi's jacket, a sherpa-lined coach jacket. One of the cuffs is botched up on that too.

tldr either get the middle keeping in mind the sizing or go for the Wrangler.

Those look nice but are too pointy for what I'm looking for, my problems so far in picking up a pair of cowboy boots have been:

Shape: I don't like boots that are too pointy. But squared toes look too much like motorcycle boots. The roundish toe also either look like work boots or motorcycle boots, so I need to find the right shape of roundish but with a point. Kinda like in my pic here >>17382275

Heel: I want a slanted/cuban type heel. Most Ariats I've found have this flat, chunky heel that, while I'm sure is overall more comfortable to walk in, ruins the aesthetic for me.

Color: looking for the right shade of dark brown, I'm undecided which. But also, do I want them in two tones or just one?

Price: I'm not gonna wear them on a daily basis and I'm reluctant to spend a lot in what it's gonna be a meme piece for me.

I know I'm sounding kind of autistic but I probably will buy just one pair of cowboy boots and I want to make sure they're the right ones.

Also, I've found some dude who sells a pair of boots that I'm almost positive are Ariats for about 26 euro in pretty good condition. Problem is they're too light in color for what I'm looking for.

Here's a selection of boots sold for cheap that kinda fall into what I'm looking for. However, each and every one of them got a con. Help me decide.

1. The color is too light
2. The shaft is kinda worn but I like them overall, not sure about the color of the vamp, though
3. Shaft color is too light
4. Reputable brand, the low heel probably makes them comfortable, but they kinda look unauthentic
5. These match my original idea in terms of shilouette an color. I'd pick these if I decide against two tones.
6.Similar to 5 but a lighter tone, kinda digg them
7. The cheapest but also the cheapest looking. Don't like the black sole and heel
8. Perhaps too round at the toebox and unsure about the straight upper part of the shaft. Prefer the arch form from the other boots.

Which ones should I get? Should I just keep looking?

Prices range from 20 to 50 euro.

You may or may not like this style of hat, but for pretty much anybody in the Old World (instead of the New World/Americas), since you are from England, the Stetson Open Road style is possibly your best option if you're interested in at least sometimes wearing a hat style akin to a cowboy hat, and you still want to be taken somewhat more seriously than a wider brim cowboy hat style might afford you. It's a nice style with smart casual and informal dress codes, generally, and works better with suits than most cowboy hats do. Just relax, enjoy life, and people might take a liking to it or not, but wear it for yourself if you like a style. Personally, I own this style of hat, and I live on the West Coast of the U.S., not really cowboy hat central, like most of the interior Western, Midwestern, and Southern states are.

NTA. I wouldn't pad it out much if you're going to do it at all, provided the hat actually fits around your noggin. Having the crown sit low like that is gonna look much better from your side profile, especially if you don't have a full beard or something to elongate your jaw shape. Sometimes I see a dude with a big Stetson and he'll look like a cone-head from the side if the crown is real tall. I don't have a strong beard so when I get a hat made I have them bring the crown down quite a bit.

Look in the mirror or cellphone camera and look at the opening of the hat while you're wearing it, mirror at a low angle. If you can distinctly see a gap around the sweatband that'll give you a good idea if the fit is right. If the hat only fits right when the sweatband is touching the top of your eyebrows, throw it away. Here's an example of an obviously too-big hat

/fa/ convinced me to start dressing like a cowboy a while back. Here's today's lower key driving 8 hours fit.

Nice pattern on that jacket. I've been looking for a shearling lambskin jacket but most I come across are boomer tier

Speaking of jackets, I've always wanted one similar to Longmire's, but the real thing is $3,600 and I don't want some costume replica POS. Any suggestions? Doesn't have to be identical, just a similar style, could even be waxed canvas or something instead of suede.

Yup, best bet is to buy them from USA and deal with the postage prices, tho sometimes you can find a sneaky UK deal on Facebook and Vinted

Yeah it was a lucky ebay find. I've got a denim quilt lined Stormrider for just cool weather, that one for down to about 30F, but then I've got my fuckhuge Carhartt because it dips way into the negatives where I am. Still looking for that holy grail western styled jacket that will do the job around -30F.

Pants are too short and you need different glasses. Western is hard with them at all but I settled on flat-bottomed aviator boomer glasses, they seem to be the most common choice among actual cowboys and other country guys who wear the style in its natural environment and I've gotten a surprising number of compliments on them. (Especially from arthoe types, weirdly enough.)
Otherwise pretty good though.

Sharp fit, although the jacket looks slightly too large for you. Strangely, the sleeves could be slightly longer. Still, very nice, anon.
>>17399693
To my eyes the pants work with the boots, but they'd definitely be short with anything else.

Nah no way, fly-overs have an irrational fear of fitted pants and will drown their ankles in an embarassing amount of break.
