I'm looking for a reasonably priced (max. around $1000) quartz or mechanical GMT watch to wear for work. I'd wear a Casio world timer but I need something subtle to wear with smart casual outfits.

Been eyeing the Seiko 5 GMT line, feels like a reasonable option if I could get like 30% off the price tag.

What would you recommend?

Rolex Oyster Perpetual in 36mm or 41mm? My wrist is 17cm in circumference and lug to lug 50mm is good, 55mm can be a stretch. My daily watch is 40mm, but I have a 35mm even and it wears fine.

When you niggers say shit like
>THIS WATCH IS BETTER THAN THIS OTHER WATCH
99% of the time it just means you prefer how it looks.
Claiming that X is better than Y usually implies that X is superior from a technical point of view. Aesthetics are irrelevant (or else just say you prefer X's looks over Y).
But what are the technical specs that truly matters when talking about watches?
>accuracy
>power reserve
>maybe choc and magnetic resistance
>good engineering, that will make the watch stands the test of time
Whenever someone say that X is better than Y in a watch thread, the honest thing to do is to ask them to bring evidence that X is more accurate, has a better power reserve and is better engineered.

Less than 42mm, that's my max.

I want something cheap and versatile since I don't want to show off or anything. I'm working for a major Mercedes dealership, sometimes with customers and sometimes in the back office, so I don't want to be too flash.

With something like a seiko 5 you wear it for 10-15 years and then the movement loses accuracy and then eventually you toss it because getting it serviced costs more than the watch. I guess if it has a lot of sentimental value you could spend ~$100 to have a watchmaker swap in a new movement and toss the old one.

If you can't find a Cal at the time for the money you want to spend, many other brand would come first before IWC, who is known flieger watch and you want to buy a gold dress watch from them.

Also the whole point of display casebacks is to show the hours of handwork that went into that one watch you're holding.
ALS watchmakers assemble every watches twice. First time to test it, second time to decorate the parts. OF COURSE YOU WANT TO SEE HOW THE MOVEMENT LOOKS. It's literally unique.
Omega uses the same machine made movement in each one of the 750k mall shitters they produce every year. Having a display caseback on this kind of watch is vulgar and a sign of bad taste.

the calatrava is fundamentally a beautiful watch, and then you realize that anything other than the latest references are tiny and all the latest references are lacking in one way or another. the 5196’s movement is too small and a patek not having a seethrough caseback to hide that is just embarrassing, and the 6119R is just an ugly VC traditionelle. i want to own a calatrava someday but none of the existing references are worth what they run for.

Yeah, full servicing yourself is not a great idea and it'll still cost you a lot in up front investment. A lot of times a regular service is a full disassembly and putting all of the pieces into little metal mesh baskets and into an ultrasonic cleaner, then re-applying the different kinds of oils (I think there are 3 main types in most watches) to every piece as you put it back together. It's possible to learn and do yourself, but it's very likely not worth it.

Regulating you can do yourself though, that's pretty easy.

Get the BB58, at the end of the day the GMT is an outright homage to the explorer 2, it’s just lazy design. Maybe at like £500 a homage is alright for some fun.

Those GS gmt are cheap on the used market, unlikely to have any issues due to the 9F.

Some will say the the BB58 is a homage too, which it is but more tastefully done. I had the 58 black but after a year the fake aged lume just ate away at me, the blue is fresher.

Also my Omegas were so much nicer in hand over the back bay, I’d say get an Aqua Terra.

It is a nice treat if the value of a luxury item goes up, for sure, but this guy is saying 'take out a loan' for something that you are walking around town with, that can easily be stolen or damaged.
Also, the market for vintage watches only went insane for the last 5 years or so. If you went back to 2010, you could easily find a Dr. No submariner for under 5k.

Well I wouldn’t take a loan out, just buy what you like but I do think value retention is important when you are starting to talk about Submariner money, in a year or 2 if you fall out of love with the watch you can sell and get into something else you like at the time. The market has been going crazy for much longer than the Rolex hype of the last 5 years, before this is was gold complication watch for PP which have fallen back not and before that Panerai and before that Rolex Bubblebacks.

No one knows if the market will fall more and if they tell you they know they are lieing. If you are buying an overseas 4-5k up or down would really bother you.

In saying that, I would be buying anything over retail personally right now. I’d be looking at the better value watches from brands, like the VC Fiftysix
