It's interesting, and thinking about celebrities decisions often they're buying the luxury items that poor people (their fans) imagine celebrities should have. So celebrities then gravitate towards recognizable luxury, unless they're trying to promote something.

Rich people generally either go with something completely ordinary to avoid attention/robbery or to say "I'm above needing a watch for attention" or go with something luxurious other rich people will recognize. And, of course, a basic rolex isn't really even a squeeze so that may be "completely ordinary" to them.

I have several "interesting" watches, mostly bought by my father from brands like Corum, Chronoswiss (pic related), Ulysse Nardin, etc. I simply don't enjoy their 'funkiness'.

These six, however, I acquired myself. Let's just say I value tried and true formulas. Classics are named such for a reason.

As for pocket watches, I wear a suit&tie to work everyday and the days I carry a pocket watch it goes in my trousers side pocket, chain unseen under the jacket. Mobile phone is usually left at the desk so the watch actually serves it purpose. Just feels more appropriate with french cuffs. Nobody makes negative comments, but I am no pushover so not much risk of that anyway.

I also intherited a couple pocket watches from my late grandfather who carried them everyday until the day he passed. Growing up watching him rock his pocket watch for decades, wrist watches still seem a tad bit femine to me.

idk, I think that poors who provide their labor in sweat shops with old equipment etc. and poors who want to consume these cheap products have individually a lower footprint maybe, but the sheer mass of them outweighs the consumption and traveling of rich people. I thought long and hard this year about what single luxury watch I wanted to buy for myself and in the end I got on the waitlist for a Rolex Explorer, because I like the smaller frame, the simplicity and the potential resale value. However that means I still don't actually have any watch to wear at all. Now I'm trying to figure out what other piece I could get for a daily wear that won't break the bank since I budgeted the money for the Explorer already.

What sub 1k watch should I get to be a daily driver until I can pick up that Explorer in some distant future?
