I'd buy vintage but I'd want the watch to have my own story attached to it. My great grandfathers watch has been passed down in my family and it's got all the scratches and wear from each generation on it. It just wouldn't feel right having a watch with a history that isn't connected to me directly.

I think theres merits to both. Part of the mystique of vintage is the tales it would tell. Idk. I think that's why vintage sports watches are so sought after. If it's from a certain era it COULD have be used by fighter pilot or deep sea explorer or some shit. Probably not, but the romance is there. The funny thing is an old dress watch could be a mob bosses or some shit, but its probably just some guys watch. Still kind of cool that something is left behind even though the person(s) is gone. I have my grandpa's old seiko and a vintage omega and I do think of them quite differently.

I agree that there is more appeal for buying something new and having it associated with you since its birth. Ultimately, it is your money and from reading your comments you should get a new watch. this is a good point, but i suppose something would have to happen to watch to make it truly mine, and not just something that i paid money for. maybe some basic refurbishing and servicing and perhaps an important event with the watch.

Ya nu rolex is piss off sometimes. It's funny because sometimes the things that people associate most with you are things that don't particularly have any meaning to you. My grandma has worn a white swatch since forever ago and whenever I see one I think of her, but I dont think she give it any thought beyond replacing the battery or watch when when it breaks. The watch I think most people associate with me is some shitty red gshock that I bought off my brothers friend for $15 for working out. Doesnt mean much to me, if I lost it I would just get another (in a different color, probably), but that is the only watch that people remember me wearing because of the color and because I use it fo all the shit I do. Biking, hiking ,climbing, chores, handyman stuff. It's kind weird. It's interesting to think about, thanks for indulging me. I wish I could help you with your dilemma. If I were to buy a new rolex I think I'd go for an OP desu. Green, black, or white if you can find an nos one somewhere. Maybe a milgauss if you're a Harry Potter fan.

I like the reduced profile and the muted colors of the A158.
The A168 has more wrist presence, though the "dial" a bit bright for my tastes.
They're both near disposable, so I have both.
The A158 get more wrist time.
A168 has an objectively better backlight, but that's not important to me.
The A700 with the flat slat bracelet had sharp corners that kept scratching me.
Also, strangely, it was "too thin" for my tastes.
I ended up gifting the A700 to someone who now wears it daily.
My current daily beater is an F-91W on a Watch Gecko strap.
I'm thinking about going back to the A158.
There's a real charm to a complete beater dressed up to look fancier than it is.
For me it will always be the A158.

Faux patina is lame, if it's not water proof it's not much of a field watch and plastic parts is cringe.
Also, 38mm is just too modern a size for me.
Classic 30mm-36mm is the sweet spot and you just don't see much outside of hideous "women's wear."
By "women's wear" I mean watches with superfluous rhinestones and "rose gold" or whatever.
Classic watches from the early to mid-1900's were just reasonably sized three handers.

Do you mean that he shouldn't list lug to lug distance or that he shouldn't give recommendations?

I actually like the way he delivers lug to lug because he will often offer caveats like endlinks sticking further out, stiff straps, or lugs that point straight out vs. curving down.

What he should do in terms of wrist size measurements is find some colleagues who have 6", 6.5", 7", 7.5", etc. wrists and take pictures of how it looks on each. Jenni does that with her and her husband's wrist.

I do think of it as a color. An ugly color. It looks like shit in nearly all watches it's used.

Worse still, it's not as luminous as boring old C3. If you want to make a watch that has pretensions of being useful as a field watch, dim-as-shit lume doesn't fly.

This will change in time, it just sucks right now.
Those older watches are starting to look pretty good to me.
Even the Rolex Explorers, though I like them, are too flashy for me.
The older ones are easier on the eyes than the newer ones.
