Back in '83 the Swatch group headed up by William Otherton was buying out every other Swiss company due to the 'Quartz Crisis' which saw massive shortages of mineral crystal due to a military coup in Swaziland inhibiting mining activity, with a knock-on effect of watchmakers not having enough Loupe magnifying eyewear as the lenses wear out very quickly when under heavy use; many established brands unable to keep up with demand with Oris (Bill Beaversbrook C.E.O.) included in that number
As it was reported in the financial broadsheets, Otherton attempted a hostile. takeover on Oris, but in fact he was a degenerate gambler who had attended school with Beaversbrook and having an old rivalry, challenged the latter to a tennis match for the pinkslips when news came in to Oris HQ that their own mines that had been decommissioned several decades prior, and which had been reopened after the Swaziland debacle, had tapped into a rich new vein previously undiscovered and so Beaverbrook declined the bet in rather uncouth terms, replying in a telegram with the famous line: "Ich bin kein Türke, also habe ich kein Interesse am Otterman's Imperium".

So, I thought I lost my keys whilst drunk at a golf tournament (I didn't), so I put my beater Omega AT on so I didn't lose it and played the rest of the round. Apparently, Co-Axial movements aren't as shock resistant as they claim to be (despite advertising a fucking golf model), and my beater has now stopped. How the fuck do I send this to Omega? The website isn't exactly clear, and the closest boutique is in Cincinnati. I am actually going to Kings Island next week, so be driving through Cincinnati, but I would like to just mail the fucker to a US service center. Anyone have any experience with this?

It's related to the size of the objects one is observing, small gears and mechanisms require the quartz crystal magnification devices operate at their highest capacity much as they do the actual eye itself, and much as the eyes get tired, watchmaker loupes suffer strain under load.
Conversely, if the objects one is looking at are very big, such as buildings or planets, there's hardly any stress to a lens at all, thus we can send telescopes like Hubble or the recent new-fangled and tangled Webb into space for years without every needing to replace the worn out quartz glass.

justify mechanical watches in 2022

- without appealing to any marketing tactics from the watch industry and
- while acknowledging both the sourcing of many components from third world countries & the replicas using these exact components to create $500 watches that appear nearly identical to $50,000 watches and
- then entertaining a thought experiment in which anybody can purchase Ferrari, Porsche, Rolls Royce etc replica cars for 1/10 the price of the genuine car; what you believe what most people would do, and what the car industry would do

I’m not opposed to people buying replicas, especially for mass produced stuff like Rolex and Omega. I don’t do it but I also don’t blame people who do. It would just bother me that I don’t have the real thing. I buy what I can afford and am happy with that. Things like fake Langes and Pateks I don’t understand though because you’re not getting any of the finishing or probably working complications that are the main appeal.

Regarding the hypothetical, I’d buy a replica Ferrari if it was functionally and aesthetically identical. But in luxury watch fakes, they’re not identical. If there’s a fake Nautilus or Royal Oak that looks as good as the real thing, I haven’t seen it.

Sorry I'm retarded, I don't know why I was thinking about screwdown case the whole time (I have actually seen that objection in the past).
Still, it's not a dive watch. There is no need for a screwdown crown in everyday life. Also, post a screwdown crown watch that can compete with the Anus, I'll wait

i would leave it cosmetically as is--it looks great!
just get it serviced so it runs somewhat accurately.
you'll never be able to reverse the refinishing once it's done--i believe you will regret having the case refinished

ok.
it's your watch.
keep in mind: it's not a valuable watch and the cost to refurbish may exceed the monetary value of the watch, probably by quite a bit.
it may/may not have some sentimental value for you -- i don't know how close you were to your grandfather, but the current condition of the watch was probably caused by him--this may be something that will eventually strengthen an emotion bond for you and him.
you will not be able to undo this type of restoration.
get it running and wear it as is for a while, see how you feel about it after a while.
just some things to think about -- either way, best of luck to you, i hope you enjoy the watch for years to come

buy a nicer watch.
not trolling, you're going to want one.
this was my experience anyway.
i like all of these watches.
the Tudor is my favorite of these and the Omega is my least favorite, but i did like it when i bought it. right now the crown tube is stripped and i'm hesitant to get it fixed. i'd like to keep it for hiking and casual use, but it will just get wrecked since i can't screw the crown down. the resale value is pretty low for these now.
the Seiko are great low-cost watches and the Obris Morgan is cool too for an inexpensive watch.
i kinda wish i'd bought a Sub when i was still into divers, but i have more than enough of them at this point.
my daily is a Datejust 36 now -- i like the size after wearing huge watches for years.
just my perspective

Just like THE CHART ™, what is the criteria used to make this chart?
>Price range
Then there are a shit ton of mistakes. Hublot and JLC should be in the same category. Longines and Oris should also be in the same category. Blancpain should be way higher than Omega. etc
>Brand perception
Also a shit ton of mistakes. Who the fuck cares about Christiaan Van Der Klaauw, Marco Lang, Bovet, Lang & Heyne or Ferdinand Berthoud? All of these brands get mogged by Rolex, Cartier or Omega if we're talking about brand perception.
>Finishing/Quality
AP is notoriously shit-tier for a HH brand. Blancpain on the same line as Hublot and lower than JLC?
