I am broke but I want a Rolex and I am willing to save/pay 5k-6k for the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, I am a wristlet and I think my two 40mm diameter seikos fit me ok but I am not an expert so maybe 38mm would be better, pic related is 40mm seiko and obviously bigger casios. what size would you recommend for me? also I am not american and I am looking for a site where I can buy brand new Rolex Oyster Perpetual and do international deliveries

So I’ve been starting to look into Panerai because the case design is really neat and I like the crown lock.

I’m not really up to date on their latest releases but they’ve released lots of watches and movements with hacking seconds over the years and if they don’t hack there’s a good chance you can do it manually by applying some pressure to the winding stem in the opposite direction. This also works on 1861 Speedmasters which didn’t technically have hacking seconds (the new 3861 does).

It’s fascinating to me that their Richemont overlords have not stepped in and fixed the brand yet. Panerai has been taking L after L for the last decade and I’m almost positive their sales are shit. I had a lot of hope for their latest CEO but he has pushed the brand in a very weird, eco-obsessed and lifestyle direction. It has gotten to the point where even Panerai loyalists have lost their patience and make fun of them now.

It doubly sucks because I think the watches are really cool. They’re just plagued by horrible management and bad direction.

>> No.17263320

>>17263301
So yeah you can technically “hack” a non hacking movement but that’s not the point. This is a brand that places itself in the price range of Rolex and such. To not have hacking on a $8-10k watch is absolutely embarrassing. It’s even more embarrassing to release an “in house” movement with no hacking and not tell anyone.
Even basic bitch seiko 5 has hacking. It shouldn’t even be a question in a modern watch.

>> No.17263328

>>17263310
I think the main thing that is killing me is that Bell and Ross makes some pretty comparable watches for less without all the bullshit. If they fixed the movement and dropped the price, it would be a knock out to me.

I agree that they should have hacking but the fact is people who care about hacking on expensive luxury watches are a minority of a minority. It’s unfortunate that there are so many pitfalls when looking at their models but the purist choice will always be a Luminor or Radiomir without seconds anyway.

>> No.17263335

I don't get why they would make a glorified 2824 as an in-house movment. Can't they get in on those tudor/breitling movements? Can't they get something less embarrassing from richmont?

Their ebauches are or at least were provided by ValFleurier. I don’t know why VF would give them such scuffed movements other than cost cutting reasons. It’s a little conspiratorial but it wouldn’t surprise me if Richemont told Panerai that they needed to increase their margins on watches sold hence the seeming downgrades over time.

This used to be a watch I wore rarely and it was a nice casual Friday to happy hour with friends watch. It looks great at night but it also looks good in any light. No, it's literally a store ran my some random chong named Seagull Official Store, it is not a factory run store.
>>17263913
>it's just a mass-produced chinese watch designed in the 60's that they can charge a lot of money for to people like you who want the authenticity; the knock-offs with display casebacks will have the exact same movement bought from seagull, in cases of the exact same quality as a watch that was made in china in the 60's
The ones made by seagull have better handsets, better dials, higher grade movements that arent filled wirh grit and better quality case finishing. Don't talk out your ass about something you know nothing about

Aliexpress doesn't have the logo next to the nqme that acknowledges that its an actual factory run store like they do with stores like san martin. Also posters on watch forums have reported that he wants warranty stuff returned to him instead of sent to the factory for service. You can also look at his business papers since aliexpress posts peoples business liscences on their store page and its different from seagulls.
He does sell real seagull watches, he might be an authorized dealear but it is not an official store of seagull.

Well, from what I have heard Rolex is producing as many watches as they can but the demand is still outpacing supply. As far as the arrogance involved with ADs that’s not Rolex’s doing. I own 2 and soon probably 3 and met an AD who wasn’t a dick so will be getting the third from him.

The watches make me happy, I wanted one when I was a little kid and couldn’t believe how lucky people were to have one, and never thought I could afford one. I definitely don’t think I’m better than anyone else, I just wanna be comfy and enjoy the watches.

Porsche and Rolex seems like an apt description but BMW being better than Porsche I can’t say since I just prefer reliability and work in a rougher neighborhood so can’t drive a luxury car anyway but hasn’t BMW put out very unreliable and expensive cars from a while now? The depreciation of them is insane. Regardless whether I buy watches or cars retention of value is soothing.

Car brands given in example were for a ball-park estimation of what could've been had, while not aiming higher than Rolex/Porsche, given the Maybach, Lotus or Astons out there.

If you've been blessed with a great AD, keep it a little secret for yourself. The game ADs are playing is understandable given the flipper's market, but it remains an accidental blessing that Rolex SA is absolutely profiteering from: They've definitely changed their attitude and control over the past decade and a half, and I can't think of many family owned jewelers who've remained loyal Rolex ADs for that reason.

If you ever feel like breaking out of the Rolex mold for what their models go for on the grey market price bracket, Tim Mosso's show is pretty neat over at Watchbox. Watching it at x1.25 speed, I can't help but feel like it's just sophisticated QVC for those who have 5 figure to burn, but there's knowledge attached to the suggested sales pitch that no other youtuber shill offers ATM

Swatch is fine if you just care about an inexpensive casual accessory.
It's not really a hobbyist brand though.

Also people might still be seething from the Swatch x Omega collab where they slapped the Omega brand on a cheap plastic quartz watch to upcharge people wanting to own a knock-off speedmaster.

Personally not too big on the skydweller in TT, it do be a bit busy.

I would've gone with an explorer in 36 if not for the current Pepsi GMT currently. Other than boiling it down to personal taste, I find myself loving the 36mm pieces, with a bias for fluted bezels.

But outside of Rolex would do you some good, you already have a dressy fluted piece in 41ish and a diver pimped out in TT.

I was thinking of asking for a blue dial Rolex skydweller new on jubilee than selling my white dial with an oyster bracelet (I bought this one gray). That way I could upgrade without having more Rolexes, it feels like I have enough already and should branch out to other high or ultra luxury brands but I do wanna take advantage of my opportunity with the AD. I was thinking of getting a Batman jubilee or a Kermit sub.

I can’t wear below 40 because I have big wrists btw. Also thanks for being a bro

all digital options? I find looking at needle dials is superior to reading arabic numerals, simply because the brain processes shapes faster.

>>17264290
I love the look of the casioak, but wish Casio drew the chapter ring or minute markers closer to the center and/or had longer hands so the markers and minute hand would overlap for precision reading of the minutes.

Maybe a sunburst dial would have worked well.

I ended up ordering a Citizen BN0100 Excalibur off Amazon UK for 190 bux. Needed a reliable watch after my tore up Mudman I got after boot camp finally gave up the ghost (6 years 1 month of battery life). Definitely one of the most illegible watches I've ever had with the tiny (positive display) font. Never get a digital G-Shock, even an All-Day Indiglo Timex Explorer Digital that looks fisher-price was better to use than that piece of crap tank that took forever to die.

Jumping date springs are fickle and can easily slip into the wrong position. no mechanical watch is actually "shockproof", you always have jumping springs, click springs and axles than can slip out of their position.
But yes, the purist attitude of swiss designers does make them keep some objectively inferior design elements because "that's just the way we do things and always have". ETA should not be using screws for dial side parts that can only been accessed bridge-side. Especially not when Seiko have proven decades ago that you can design a movement that doesn't even need to be flipped during assembly or disassembly.

And this was roughly the timex I had before I enlisted. I thoroughly enjoyed the All-Day Indiglo; which had a diffraction grating holographic backing. Combined with the large font, it was extremely easy to read in every lighting condition except complete darkness where I had to turn on the electrolume.

wore it on an 18mm leather nato and first watch I wore all the time.

Digital
+availability in many sizes and styles
-cannot read in complete darkness without using extra battery for backlight
-takes a few extra milliseconds to read the numerals and letters compared to 3 hands representing a percentage of a whole circle.
analog
+can be read in the dark if hands are lumed
+can be understood faster (at least the time portion)
-great chance of misalignment of hands with quartz
-great chance of bad QC with a lot of niche/small brands until you get to a certain price point with mechanicals (and the general inaccuracy)
-small selection of quartz with sub-second ticking (which would solve the issue of the above two)
-date wheel mechanism is fragile in all movements mech or quartz

tl;dr, there is no "perfect watch", just as there is no "perfect car" so this is the perfect hobby to tax the middle and upper class.

AND it has a special mechanism that ensures that the second hand ALWAYS lands on the chapter ring markers and doesn't sweep or tremble when it lands.

When the hell is Casio gonna do a bigger screen on their small digitals? There's so much wasted space. Timex does it better. Plus they still offer a full metal case. Unlike Casio's fake metal resin cases.

Get yourself a catalogue from Nomos (IIRC, they're still mailing printed copies), I'm sure you'd love it

At this point, given the fact the mudman wasn't working out and that no other gshock has the right analogue hands you really want, I think you oughta go with a Citizen Pro Master Diver.

good shit. I went for the Excalibur (found one still sold by Citizen UK on amazon, hope Citizen NA will let me register it for the 6 year warraty) because the hands overlap the chapter ring.

Otherwise, if the Casioak came with a sunburst dial, I would have totally gone for that. Because no second hand misalignment issues with the digital second.

Although, Citizen could totally improve their reputation to ROWLEKS levels of followings if they would just sweep their seconds (more power hungry, but they have solar and 6mo power reserves) and no date with their screwdown crown lines.

Totally missed the mark/chance on the Promaster Tough. And the Tough was discontinued before I was in the market. That would have been my choice over either divers. Even less things to break (the divers still have an anodized bezel to scratch and break off).

the mudman actually got chewed through (no more WR), and now is out of batteries so I am now allowed to get another watch without looking wasteful.

My two mechanical watches (rolex homages) are needing service and are losing massive amounts of time after 8 and 10 years so I literally don't have an accurate wrist watch on me rn, can't wait to move on from homage brand automatics to an actual good brand analog watch.

>I ended up ordering a Citizen BN0100 Excalibur off Amazon UK

Oh yeah I forgot abt that, though I doubt they'd allow for the warranty transfer, you should be in good hands nonetheless with their serviceable quality overall.

ooooh, homages from 8 to 10 years ago, now that peaks my little interest into the muddy era of shady Parnis' and offshoots, got any pics?

here's a pepsi steinhart I'm wearing rn to hold me over.

It was running slow. I magnetized it against my Razor Blackwidow and then left it alone until it ran within 10 seconds a day.

I have no idea what kind of damage I'm doing to it "regulating" it via brute force this way.

But my other one is a Hager GMT. The 1st generation before the tackiness of the current stock. All black ceramic with lume in the numerals in the bezel.

>>17266236
the Hager GMT literally had a jammed date window, I kinda jiggled the crown till it popped loose but then started changing dates at 4 am, so I panicked, kept trying to reglitch it to change at another time, jammed the date wheel. Kept wearing it and it finally stopped keeping time (hour and minute was wrong but second kept running) and I shat myself over the implications that the datewheel might have acted as a paprachute/anchor for the rest of the movement and stopped the entire thing so I stopped wearing that.

a bit better than parnis but at 6-7x the price because ETA movements.

The sapphire and ceramic on the Hager was so tough I scraped against my slightly open window ashing a cigarette and examined it when I stopped.

Watch had no damage, car window had a watch shaped notch ground into it. Was a very loud knife against fine china plate scrape.

I think that case's "invincibility" made me complacent and I might have bumped the movement hard enough to jam the date mechanism to start that whole spiral into the movement not working.

Oh a steiny, that's not bad!
WDYM by "regulating"? You're worrying me that you're opening it up ಠ_ಠ
That ETA can be easily adjusted by a watchmaker, just INSIST on it being NOT a cleanup/servicing, though it does need one.

>>17266248
Huh, changing dates at 4 AM is more like a cheaper-than-swiss/peak Seiko thing, shoulda been fine desu

>>17266275
Honestly, you don't have to let those two die, they can be fixed since they're not chinesium DG movement shite, they're absolutely worth saving. But yeah, I wouldn't use them as reliable pieces if you're enrolled in a contract/in service atm.
