Just stumbled into the fact that they don’t have hacking now? Jesus fucking Christ that’s embarrassing. If the watch was in the $3-5k range with hacking I think it’d be a pretty heavy hitter.

I’m not really up to date on their latest releases but they’ve released lots of watches and movements with hacking seconds over the years and if they don’t hack there’s a good chance you can do it manually by applying some pressure to the winding stem in the opposite direction. This also works on 1861 Speedmasters which didn’t technically have hacking seconds (the new 3861 does).

It’s fascinating to me that their Richemont overlords have not stepped in and fixed the brand yet. Panerai has been taking L after L for the last decade and I’m almost positive their sales are shit. I had a lot of hope for their latest CEO but he has pushed the brand in a very weird, eco-obsessed and lifestyle direction. It has gotten to the point where even Panerai loyalists have lost their patience and make fun of them now.

It doubly sucks because I think the watches are really cool. They’re just plagued by horrible management and bad direction.

So yeah you can technically “hack” a non hacking movement but that’s not the point. This is a brand that places itself in the price range of Rolex and such. To not have hacking on a $8-10k watch is absolutely embarrassing. It’s even more embarrassing to release an “in house” movement with no hacking and not tell anyone.

I agree that they should have hacking but the fact is people who care about hacking on expensive luxury watches are a minority of a minority. It’s unfortunate that there are so many pitfalls when looking at their models but the purist choice will always be a Luminor or Radiomir without seconds anyway.

Their ebauches are or at least were provided by ValFleurier. I don’t know why VF would give them such scuffed movements other than cost cutting reasons. It’s a little conspiratorial but it wouldn’t surprise me if Richemont told Panerai that they needed to increase their margins on watches sold hence the seeming downgrades over time.

This used to be a watch I wore rarely and it was a nice casual Friday to happy hour with friends watch. It looks great at night but it also looks good in any light. It used to be a backup essentially but now I can wear it day after day and it never fails to impress. I wouldn't be upset if it was my only watch. It can do it all.

Aliexpress doesn't have the logo next to the nqme that acknowledges that its an actual factory run store like they do with stores like san martin. Also posters on watch forums have reported that he wants warranty stuff returned to him instead of sent to the factory for service. You can also look at his business papers since aliexpress posts peoples business liscences on their store page and its different from seagulls.
He does sell real seagull watches, he might be an authorized dealear but it is not an official store of seagull.

Well, from what I have heard Rolex is producing as many watches as they can but the demand is still outpacing supply. As far as the arrogance involved with ADs that’s not Rolex’s doing. I own 2 and soon probably 3 and met an AD who wasn’t a dick so will be getting the third from him.

I ended up ordering a Citizen BN0100 Excalibur off Amazon UK for 190 bux. Never get a digital G-Shock, even an All-Day Indiglo Timex Explorer Digital that looks fisher-price was better to use than that piece of crap tank that took forever to die.

Jumping date springs are fickle and can easily slip into the wrong position. no mechanical watch is actually "shockproof", you always have jumping springs, click springs and axles than can slip out of their position.
But yes, the purist attitude of swiss designers does make them keep some objectively inferior design elements because "that's just the way we do things and always have". ETA should not be using screws for dial side parts that can only been accessed bridge-side. Especially not when Seiko have proven decades ago that you can design a movement that doesn't even need to be flipped during assembly or disassembly.

It was running slow. I magnetized it against my Razor Blackwidow and then left it alone until it ran within 10 seconds a day.

I have no idea what kind of damage I'm doing to it "regulating" it via brute force this way.

But my other one is a Hager GMT. The 1st generation before the tackiness of the current stock. All black ceramic with lume in the numerals in the bezel.

the Hager GMT literally had a jammed date window, I kinda jiggled the crown till it popped loose but then started changing dates at 4 am, so I panicked, kept trying to reglitch it to change at another time, jammed the date wheel. Kept wearing it and it finally stopped keeping time (hour and minute was wrong but second kept running) and I shat myself over the implications that the datewheel might have acted as a paprachute/anchor for the rest of the movement and stopped the entire thing so I stopped wearing that.

a bit better than parnis but at 6-7x the price because ETA movements.

The sapphire and ceramic on the Hager was so tough I scraped against my slightly open window ashing a cigarette and examined it when I stopped.

Watch had no damage, car window had a watch shaped notch ground into it. Was a very loud knife against fine china plate scrape.

I think that case's "invincibility" made me complacent and I might have bumped the movement hard enough to jam the date mechanism to start that whole spiral into the movement not working.

That ETA can be easily adjusted by a watchmaker, just INSIST on it being NOT a cleanup/servicing, though it does need one.

Honestly, you don't have to let those two die, they can be fixed since they're not chinesium DG movement shite, they're absolutely worth saving. But yeah, I wouldn't use them as reliable pieces if you're enrolled in a contract/in service atm.
