Real discussion about a Rolex if I may?
I think the Sea-Dweller Deepsea is the most underrated watch in their "tool watch" line. I think it's a work of art, it's obvious that its the most maximalist watch Rolex make but unlike other popular maximalist watches like the Santos and Royal Oak, it doesn't achieve it falsely by just giving it a busy dial and fake screws, it takes the main "tool" metric of a dive watch to its logical conclusion of being a watch that can survive more depth than any human could, the result is a completely impractical watch for daily wear.

For the rest of their tool watch range, it all takes it self a little bit too seriously and with all the talk about history, heritage and exquisite production, you might trick yourself into thinking that actually a Submariner is the best tool for a diver or a GMT-Master II is indispensable for a pilot, or if you're an artic explorer a trusty Explorer II is what you need.

It's obviously bollocks, a G-Shock is THE tool watch if there isn't already some kind of computer you use for timekeeping and a lot more, obviously you're not buying a Rolex tool watch because you need it as a tool, that's obvious to everyone and we all know people like Rolexes because they're big, blingy and expensive, but the Deepsea is just so honest about that and takes it all the way. Despite the idea of a Tool watch being a symbol of infinite practicality it's heavy and bulky to the end of being waterproof to a completely unnecessary degree, even the sticker price of £12,000 is ridiculous to the point of being facetious for an ostensibly practical watch.

It's almost a self-parody by Rolex of completely loosing the soul of tool watches to give some prop to a middle-aged businessman to wear under his Tuxedo and pretend he's James Bond for an evening.

The Deepsea is not a divers watch, it's a huge chunk of jewellery that in theory should be giving Rolex wearers exactly what they want, something to show off and causes the whole room to notice what's on your wrist. Yet, no one I've seen review it likes it, they all complain that it's too bulky and blingy, that it wouldn't fit on most people's wrist.

That's why I like it though, it's too much Rolex for Rolex aficionados to handle. You can't hide it up your sleeve when someone inevitably comes along with a watch three times the price, you can't bullshit yourself or anyone else that your luxury watch is just a practical and subtle tool, you need to either A. not take yourself too seriously or B. be a total chad to wear a Deepsea because it's the horological equivalent of just putting your balls on the table of everyone you come across.

It completely shits all over the proclaimed virtues and pomposity of luxury watches, it's gangsta rappers appropriating Dom Perignon and I love it for that.

WAYWT /wt/? For me, it's my Tissot Seastar PRX-predecessor powered by the in-house Tissot 2031 calibre movement. It looks a little rough cosmetically, but I serviced this myself a little while ago and it runs really well given the fact that I bought it as water damaged. Honestly not sure if I prefer this or my PRX, both are really nice watches IMO.

I actually got talked into buying a Tudor BB ceramic when I was dehydrated as hell. The strap was very uncomfortable and the watch can shatter entirely. It has a unique movement but the way it’s all black doesn’t look good either. I got memed into it but luckily I traded it in for a black Pelagos which was a much better watch at least for me.

I’m a consumerist whore who has bought Rolex, omega, and tudors. My take is you don’t ever take shit from an AD. There is always someone selling the watch on the gray market and you the money and effort and cocksucking required for getting the watch you want from an AD is rarely worth it unless you have special connections. Best case you paid over gray market as was the case with this omega I bought for at least 25% over, or worst case you buy watches you don’t want, “build a relationship with the ad”, and then in the end don’t get the watch you want.

No idea why you thought that. Both the leather and nato straps were fine for me. Also the near-all black is very attractive and unlike anything else on the market. I've never heard of one shattering either.

As for the grey market, it has it's uses to buy vintage and more unpopular brands that are cheaper than list but I'll never pay over MSRP. That's why I also have contacts with a number of AD's to get hard to obtain pieces and not pay over the odds.

Based off the watches you mentioned, it sounds like the reasons you buy watches are different than mine; I’m guessing for horological reasons (at least more so the case than for me).

I thought that because the watch strap was too small for my almost 8 inch wrists, even with adding another hole in the bracelet it squeezed me to death. The shattering is unlikely but more likely to happen since it’s made of ceramic not titanium or stainless steel. It’s a sports watch but it has that reduced durability from the materials. Aesthetics wise, it wasn’t for me with the all black. Lastly the watch was way too small for me. These are all just my takes of that watch, and it’s my opinion as a mong, so take it as you will.

Would your connections allow you to buy Rolex, a snoopy, Royal Oak, PP Nautilus, etc? How did you build those connections?

It's not even required, at least not in my local Rolex AD's. In the last 6 months or so you can put down an order for anything you want and Rolex HQ will ship it. It might be a really long wait but if the order is confirmed you will get it eventually.

In my experience with ADs they were either total assholes or said they would put me on the list and never called even for models which are less popular like a seadweller. I traded my Tudor to a guy plus cash on top for a seadweller 126600 and it ended up being the same as retail. For me this was a better use of my time and money than dealing with NYC Rolex ads.

Rolex - I have no AD for them since I've only ever bought 1 Rolex at retail.

Royal Oak - fuck no. these days you have to deal with AP directly since they've closed almost all their authorized resellers, and their boutique staff are cunts. I did managed to buy some before the current craze from a grey market dealer though.
PO - yes. got a very good relation ship with a certain Patek AD. relationship started simply by chatting about watches with one of their managers, they sell lots of brands including Tudor which is how I got my ceramic.

IIRC they are one of the least manufactured Rolexes still in production and I wouldn’t have any guarantees of getting one even if I waited years. I got a longer leather and nato strap from Tudor for free because the standard ones, you get both with the watch now by default, were too short. That's one good thing about buying from AD's, getting longer straps or extra bracelet links for us non-wristlets is never a problem. I currently have Patek making me new straps at no cost for the 5226G I recently bought. Same can't be said if buying second-hand.

Honestly, I would agree but also say that they are very different watches as well. One is a chrono and the other a diver. They really cucked the 39 mm, the sunburst bezel, the no date, the diminished diving potential to the original. I own the original and it felt like it was a watch of its own separate from the submariner I can’t say the same about the new one.

The hesalite crystal speed master is a classic, not my taste, but a much better watch which is not buried in the same hype as this wristlet cope Tudor.

Depends on your motivation. If you wear the watch for others then it makes sense. If you wear it for yourself because you enjoy the finer details and the experience of the real thing then getting the real thing is the choice for you. The reps can be quite good, I don’t own any reps but they take heat off of people who wear high profile watches so they’re okay in my book as long as they’re not saying it’s real or worse selling it for a price as though it were real.
