I've been thinking about buying a casual beater type automatic watch around 1000-2000 dollar range (as a birthday gift for myself).

Watches I've been looking at:
>Sinn 556
>Sinn 105 UTC
>Oris BIg Crown Pointer Date
>Seiko Alpinist
>Seiko Presage Sharp Edged
>Certina DS Action Diver

What would be your recommendations?

The Sinn is a solid watch and has options for batons or Arabic indices. The all brushed and especially tegimented steel would make for an excellent beater. The Seiko Alpinist has a lot of options—dial, indices, case shape and size. That choice would require more research imo. I have the shark tooth and it is a great daily, but it is dummy thicc. The contours help but you do notice it if it isn’t strapped tight af to your wrist.

The biggest pull-factor for the Certina would actually be the 38mm option. A compact little diver would be great, but I agree the design is a bit bland.

OEM Seiko bracelet is fine. The clasp sucks as it pokes out and has a gap. Not too keen on colored dial for daily beater but that’s just me. The ghost Alpinist (white dial steel indices) is one you should look at imo. As someone else said, less complications are better for daily wear. It's at least 5mm too big, and the case is far too modern looking for that style of dial/hands. That is also hands down the most poorly executed multi-scale dial I have ever seen. I feel retarded because I didn't realize until just now that grande sonnerie is different from minute repeater.
A grande sonnerie is a setting that automatically chimes the hours and quarters when the time passes a quarter (e.g., 2:45 or 3:00), like how a grandfather clock chimes the hours on the hour. But a minute repeater chimes the hours, quarters, and minutes when you press a button or pull a slide.
Dufour's Grande Sonnerie has three complications: a grande sonnerie setting, a petite sonnerie setting (which chimes the hours on the hour, but only the quarters at quarter after, half past, and quarter til), and a minute repeater button.
I appreciate this watch a lot more now.

This size conundrum would apply to other flieger watches, but the chinkshitter seems fun to try this barebones utilitarian style.

This may be a premature post, but I got a call from my jeweler today telling me to come in “wink wink”. I have been on hold for a submariner (date or no date) for about 4 months.

The reason why I’m not too excited is that last time he did this, I drove 25 minutes only for him to show me a ring that he thought my wife would like. I’m hoping this isn’t one of those times.

I’ll keep you all updated!
