alright all you vitra fans, hans wegner-heads, children of rich parents and furniture design geeks.
what is the ultimate designer couch to crash on?

so far i've slept on mies van der rohe's daybed/knoll barcelona daybed (whatever it's called), a ducaroy togo three seater and an eames es 106.

surprisingly the togo was the most comfy despite the ridges and the es 106 the absolute worst, i felt like a doctor was about to look at my teeth.

i'm in the market for a new sofa and want something that's as much a comfy place to crash as it is a beautiful piece of design "history". please give me your best inspo

Favorite indoor plants? For me it's the Pothos. It grows quickly and I love the way it vines down if I place it up on a shelf. If it gets droopy it just needs some water and it goes back to normal.

I also like succulents because they're so low-maintenance but I find them harder to work in to the style of a room.

Depending on how enclosed the space is and how bad/good a view you have you should:
Get an outdoor sofa and chairs, outdoor rug, coffee table to create a seating area to the right of the picture
Get a firepit or chimenea to the left of the picture
depending on budget get a cover/pergola like picrel and grow some climbing plants on the sides. You can also put an electric heater on the roof.
waterproof warm fairy lights all over the place and maybe a few candles or oil lamp

Kind of a meme plant by now but my fav is the Monstera. It is very easy to take care of and it can get huge with good care and patience. It looks fresh and bright and it casts beautiful shadows. This plant came from a cutting with two leaves that i took in November 2020 and it's already 120cm tall

A rubber tree is always nice for a big statement piece, and some of them have pretty color variation. For trailing plants you can't beat a string of hearts. They're easy to care for and grow like weeds, although they do like a lot of light. Sansevieria are good too, they come in lots of different shapes and sizes and will grow in a dark closet if that's all you've got.

Hardwood is beautiful but it can be a source of anxiety, especially if you've got pets or kids and youre always worried about it getting scratched or stained. Our floors are stained from previous owners and our dogs slide around on it and scratch it up so we mostly cover it up with rugs. The furniture is absolute bottom tier ikea bullshit. The fabrics & rugs are haphazard and meme tier. The common theme of most of these rooms is to just overwhelm with cliches on the first impression but you quickly get bored because there’s nothing to actually look at and hold your interest. You should build a room around a standout piece of furniture ( you can get away with a basic ikea couch if you have a statement chair to counterpose) and coordinate fabrics & colors to hold more to a theme while still having individual details to get lost in. Returning to my arrogant and heavy handed criticism, one thing I’m noticing as I look on a lot of these rooms are a real lack of cultural markers. I really have no idea of who lives there or where they’re located. Is it Berlin? Seoul? Seattle? There’s no indication of any particular geography, language, religion, ethnicity. Going back to the art, most of it is either some arbitrary abstract piece, or an equally arbitrary nature piece. I imagine it’s hung on the wall merely to take up space and add some color, but it doesn’t MEAN anything. It doesn’t point to who lives there or what they value. It’s devoid of history and place. This is unacceptable.

Art is subjective anon. I wouldn't hang a picture in my house just because it ~means something~. I agree that bland prints of random shit are dumb, but the only thing that matters is that it means something to the person who chose it.

Pros:
I like how it feels on my back
Can fold to get extra space
If using a traditional type of filling and not memory foam you can fix every lump
Don't need to buy a bedframe

Cons:
Don't get to stick things under the bed (a shelf kind of fixes this)
Fixing shit requires you to flip and shake it around every time, and it happens more easily than normal beds
The space you save is more for walking around, you can't just leave shit there
Other people find it weird and possibly a sign of poverty. You can avoid this by making your room kind of /fa/ but some chicks "still can't even"

I like the floor bed vibe but my concerns are that getting up and down from the floor will be hard on my disintegrating knees and also that my bed will become a magnet for dust bunnies. Plus I think it just looks kind of sloppy unless you have some kind of neatly contained system like a Japanese futon. Just a mattress on the floor with a normal duvet looks messy to me.

Millennials -- and certainly zoomers -- have some of the WORST interior taste of any generation before them, bar none. Mostly because all of it is deliberate and appropriated from what they've seen in old media, nothing is genuine or reflective of a life they live, it's just boring empty soulless spaces where they sit behind a computer screen surrounded by 200 plants. It's all so static and sterile and lifeless. Like tombs where they will spend 20 hours a day consuming media until they die.

Yeah probably, I'm usually all for buying "neutral", timeless stuff which will still look nice in a few years. But even then, I must say I'm quite a fan of recent interior trends (which is special because I'm sceptical of most newer stuff, whether it's fashion, art/music, etc.) and I like how it tries to revive Art Deco with the usual shapes/patterns and gold accents. So what "movement" are we in exactly? I see all these attempts to replicate MCM furniture or add some new twist to it, but exactly constitutes furniture design of the 21st century? Is it post-modern furniture? How does that look like? Any current furniture designers to look up? This question has been bugging me lately as all I see is just attempts to capture MCM in furniture sold today.

>a real lack of cultural markers
I mean if you really wanna get into it the modern world's upper classes have become so homogenized that you can't really tell where any of them are from based on rooms alone most of the time.
If you want that you gotta look at how poor people are living, which is why a lot of art pulls from poor people to begin with.
If you're rich enough to worry about the precise aesthetics of your room and things like what design house you want your couch to come from you're not gonna have any culturally specific tastes tied to where you live because for most of these people they're not even connected to where they live.

You can find them if you search online, but it definitely sends the message of "if you have to ask, you can't afford it". I like 1stdibs partially for this reason, it makes the extreme-higher end prices transparent.
>>17192405
I don't think we're in a defined "movement", but I think we're swinging towards maximalism more generally. I think the past decade took minimalism to its logical extreme (Farmhouse, Scandinavian, Japanese), and now with a post-lockdown world people want more color/texture/experimentation. There are minor revivals in postmodernism (see: Memphis group from the 1980s for examples of postmodern furniture), Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and other styles with bold colors and patterns. I wouldn't say that MCM is "in", but I do think that the rise of West Elm and Ikea have made that style particularly affordable for the average person.

"Incorporate"? I mean, a decorative item is decorative because it's primary value is in being seen. Whether in a vitrine or on a shelf, you choose to put it out and take space away from other things because you want this thing to have presence and visibility. The only reasonable question would be what size display and where does it go; not "how" you incorporate it.

Has a lot to do with how tasteful the figures themselves are, in that pic, figs like the Saber Alter, Bike Kino or the Myethos Miku wouldn't raise as much eyebrows as 1/4 bunnies or other lewd figs would. Still I wouldn't place them in the living room because they simply look too out of place there for me. In my bedroom, I have some open elements with figs (bitch to dust but oh well) and a glass cabinet, so I think that they're quite tastefully placed all across the room, alongside with my 1/18 car models. I wouldn't dedicate an entire single corner to them while trying to keep them out of the rest of the room, as it looks a bit as if you'd try to contain them somehow. Buy quality over quantity, but that should be a given. Lighting is always important, that setup looks already pretty good in that aspect with the plants too.
Tl;dr: They will always look a bit tacky but isn't that part of the charm, that's why we collect colorful anime girls in the first place.

Wow a repost. Thanks for the compliment.

How many differences can you spot?

Am I headed in the right direction?

overall I like it.

it could be an improvement to align the picture frames all to their top edges. pic related. please ignore my shity paint skills.
additionally i would only hang the black&white pictures on the mint(?) colored wall. and the colored pictures on the white wall.
contrary to the other 2 anons i dont think something bigger is needed for the white wall.

sound boxes would look better on the wall. top edges aligned to picture frames. and only have picture frames BETWEEN them. (on mint wall) so that the sound boxes act as frames for the pictures.

record player and equalizer aligned to each other and the rack might also be a quick improvement.

I just moved and now have a walk-in closet for the first time ever. Have no idea how to properly organize it though. Any tips?

LOL because sensory overload is my middle name. It's actually very relaxing in person.
Sorry about the guy on the monitor, just some newfag.

That room is a nightmare for someone with allergies.

I really dont see the issue with grabbing the guitar and theres nothing inherently wrong with using floor space for plants. I dont get what kind of activities it is you would need that space for. Besides we dont know that this is some shoebox apartment, there could be a big room behind the couch

Are you the anon with the embarrassing faux-Hemingway setup in the condo? The one who put the dinkiest .22 on the beige wall like it was a cool thing to do?

Use Command strips/hooks. I always used nails in previous places, but I live in a place with plaster and I don't want to drill great big permanent holes in the wall to use anchors. Command strips work really well.

Are you looking for actual maximalist interior design? Do not look for inspo, you will end up building someone else's dream. This weekend, go to a thrift store, flea market, or some yard sales with cash and buy $20 worth of things you think looks cool or like. Small shelves, figurines, paintings, ceramic shit whatever. Take it home and figure out where it could fit/where you like it. If you realize you need/want another large piece of furniture, look on craigslist until a version you like appears for cheap. If you realize you don't like something you bought, give it away or sell it if you think you can make money. Repeat going to thrift stores/flea markets when you want to get more neat shit. Stop buying shit if you think your house is getting too crowded. Every hour of being on your phone or computer or TV, turn it off, go into another room, turn the lights off, close your eyes, and sit on the floor for five minutes. Old detective paperbacks are very cheap, very fun to read, and very fast. Trust.

>it's gonna look dated real fast
I never got this as a standalone criticism. I'm not staging my house to sell to a capricious market, I'm getting shit that looks good to live with

Everyone buys shit they think looks good to live with, its just that opinions, including yours, can change. In college I used to think a shitty amazon tapestry hanging on my wall was the coolest shit but now I just think that's tacky.
