Last of my Imaginary Authors samples

Falling into the Sea
First smells like a lemon drop, sweet sour. They list a sand note which gives it a hint of earthy dryness. It's not oceanic if that's what you're expecting. Sourness fades into the lychee and then creamy balmy florals. Interesting contrasting with Sundrunk, this is much sweeter, more approachable, feminine, but less interesting. It lasts though.

Saint Julep
An unusual mix, it doesn't go on as refreshing as the mint suggest, there is a savoriness from deeper green, whiskey, and browned sugar, but not overly sweet. Distracted from all that, I do not get the tangerine, or it's mild and sweet enough to seamlessly blend in with the rest. The drydown isn't as charming, as the mint mostly disappears leaving only the sugar. Lasted longer than others claimed.

Whispered Myths
Probably the most divergent of their frags. It's listed as animalic and goes on smelling like stale piss and then rotting cantaloupe. It shifts drier and dustier from the oud while not fully escaping the compost vibe, though it does mellow out. There are so many other old dusty bookshelf scents that achieve what this tried, but if you want to smell like a goth chick who rolls around in the graveyard then be my guest.

Memoirs of a Trespasser
An older sample, hated it because despite being vanilla it smells laced with black pepper, which is disgusting. Probably the guaiac wood note. Pulled it out to give it one more try and it's unfortunately still prominently there. Found one reviewer mentioning the same, but most seem to like it, and I can concede it's intensely creamy and smooth.

If anyone is looking to sample, I would suggest at most Cape Heartache, Yesterday Haze, Slow Explosions, Saint Julep, and probably Memoirs of a Trespasser. O'Unknown, Sundrunk are passable too.
I have not sampled Fox in the Flowerbed, Telegrama, Cobra and the Canary, Whiff of Wafflecone, and any discontinued.

This was just delivered. I picked it up because I like the other Guerlain eaux de Cologne. I currently have Eau de Guerlain as well.
It's pretty nice but it's VERY different if you're expecting something like a traditional eau de Cologne. It smells like a modern cologne, not an 18th century cologne.

It opens not with citrus but a ton of orange blossom and quickly settles into a nice laundered-sheets musk. The citrus is only ever a secondary note. The aromatics are toned way down to just a bit of lavender. It's not very aromatic at all.
Supposedly it smells like Mugler Cologne but I don't really get that. Orange blossom and musk, but the Mugler smells soapier.

As with most eaux, it's not here for performance. A couple hours is all you get, but it's very refreshing on a hot day.

Time for blog update. I’ve been trying out these scents. Turns out 1ml vials suck balls.

I really enjoyed the vibe of Hermes Terre des Hermes but it gave me an headache.

I enjoyed Phantom even though it doesn’t smell futuristic to me, is a fun scent.

I was severely underwhelmed by YSL la Nuit. I’m not sure what I was smelling or if I could smell anything, I got some fabric conditioner vibes and some cardamom.
Georgia Armani profundity also disappointed me, I could barely smell anything. I could say Theissen thing about Prada l‘homme.
I guess to get the full experience of Versace Eros, you have to spray like 6 times and go to a club. But I wasn’t impressed by it. I’m going to try out the dolce and Havanna perfume on my date on Friday.

I found CDG 2 really nice and it gave me a fancy artsy vibe.

I learnt that 1ml vial sucks and it ruins the experience if you don’t know how much you are applying/oversupplying.

I now have a new found appreciation for my bottle of Missoni (20€ Bleu de Chanel) and my bottle of Issey Miyake super majeure. Yes these scents aren’t revolutionary, I initially regretted blindbuying them because I thought they smelt the same. Now I appreciate the blue scents value of being honest. They are cheap, strong and unpretentious. and good for those days I just want to smell like a bro that just showered.

I would say all of their fragrances created while Guerlain was family owned was created first for the art and secondly for mass appeal. They do not smell like your typical fragrances being produced today which are designed to maximize profit (cheap materials and mass appeal). The quality of vintage Guerlain will not be produced on such a scale in todays market. For example, the Mysore sandalwood in vintage Guerlain heritage is exceptional.

Guys, how many sprays is too many? I usually do 3-5 for EdT and reapply around lunchtime, and 6 for EdP without reapplying. Recently I overheard some female coworkers talking about how our security guy reeked of cologne and how tacky it is. Now I'm starting to worry that they've said the same thing about me. Every fragrance reviewer on YT says to spray like 10-15 times, are they lunatics? Am I thinking too much about this? Some of my female coworkers have told me I smell good before, but after the comments about the security guy I'm starting to think they were being passive aggressive. Please help.

I would second the recommendations of Jicky, Mitsouko, and Shalimar. All niche quality and timeless rather than dated. Of those three, I find Jicky to be the most masculine-leaning (it's basically a fougere), followed by Shalimar, then Mitsouko. Admittedly I am biased towards Jicky because it's my favorite scent and I wear it almost every day

Fragrance reviewers have fucked up their noses by taking this hobby too seriously. If any of them suggest more than 6 sprays, that's a very good signal that their opinions are shit and they should not be listened to. Sprays should be as follows, once on each wrist, once on each of your inner elbow, once on both sides of your neck for a maximum of 6 sprays. Anyways, your coworkers are probably just bitches looking for something to complain about or your security guard rolled around in some stinky shit before going to work. As long as what you're wearing is safe and inoffensive, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I'm excited to try out the Marettimo. I wanted the other two in the line as well, but they were out of stock. Likewise with the profundo in a way. I dig aquatics and sea notes and I wanted to get profumo, but it seems to be gone/overpriced. I don't mind things being popular. I'm a normie, not a contrarian hipster. The bold red is dope. I have a sample and it has that sweet red apple stank that I crave so much. Like biting into a beautiful honey crisp but all over your body. Dries to a nice woodiness. So I had to get a full bottle. the truth is there is not much to discuss with fragrances, at least not much of substance. Unless people in the thread are actively making their own fragrances, the best that can happen is going to be similar to the shit people say at a wine tasting.

And since making fragrances is actually probably even more inaccessible than making wine it's unlikely for that to change. I'd have tried my hand at it but you need so many different chemicals and stuff that it's not worth it. If someone sold kits for this that included a lot of chemicals in very small amounts, then maybe they could buy in bulk (which you have to do) and split it up to sell to people.

>> No.17138096

>>17137387
not too much. I actually care very much about packaging and aesthetics (at least for packaging that will stay in my home and not be thrown out), to the point where I'd gladly pay a bit more for something if I like the design. I've done this for detergent, food, coffee, and camera film. If it's in my house then I want it to look nice.

But, since I have a small collection of fragrances that I just keep out of sight anyway, I don't care that much. Most of my fragrances are in sample vials anyway and I already have a couple that to me look nice enough. So I suppose as long as the bottle isn't really bad, like, I don't know, a pink cock shape or something then I don't care.

The worst part is...it works. Almost every girl I know (I'm 21 in college) says something to the effect of "That Johnny Depp one is my favorite cologne on guys". And it's so boring. BDC EDP is boring, but I prefer to wear it and catch whiffs of it over Sauvage EDT. My favorite part of wearing fragrance is getting whiffs of it throughout the day, and I can't even smell it.

Do you find that dab samples are good enough to try out the fragrance or should I go with the ones that come with a sprayer? Also usually how many ml do you buy of each fragrance? I feel like 1ml isn't quite enough but 2,5ml is so much more expensive and that I could be trying twice as many fragrances for the same money.

I'm torn between this and Azzaro PH Intense.

How animalic is Yatagan? I have a few woody frags, but nothing really in that niche besides new Aramis. Is the performance in modern Yatagan good?

>How animalic is Yatagan?
Not really, it has castoreum but its sweet and not really barnyard smelling. It does have kind of a general dirty vibe from the spices and herbs and the sage in the opening is a bit pissy but its nothing compared to the civet or deer musk attars i have.
>Is the performance in modern Yatagan good?
It's okay, it doesn't project heavily but it stays on the body, i usually wear five or six sprays, longevity could be better.
Azzaro pour homme instese, i have never smelled but it's not for me, it's a very different fragrance from yatagan.
Look im a guy in his 30s that sometimes wears dated fragrances, if you are a guy in your 20s or don't already know you are into this weird stuff don't buy something like yatagan blind. It's one of my favorites but it's not for everyone.
