What do you think about the GMT master ii 16713? Last two-tone gmt before the horrible maxicases came in.
I remember seeing one of these in a shop window once, must've been 6 or 7 years old at the time, and was enamored by the contrast of the black and the gold.
Any caveats anyone knows about in picking one of these up?
I recall reading once that two-tone subs and gmts are not recommended 2nd hand as the gold parts means bracelets stretch horribly if you buy one that's been well used. But besides that I don't know of any technical problems.
Stylistically?
They seem to be almost always cheaper than plain SS gmt masters of the same range.

If you can get one for whatever you consider to be the right price, I'd go for it. But there's a serious argument made to wait on most Rolexes as well. They're in the process of finishing a factory expansion and are expected to produce up to 25% more movements, and they'll be done by the end of the year or beginning of 2023. Rolex prices have already been dipping lately and I think grey market/used prices will dip substantially when Rolex is bringing 25% more watches to market.

Ah thanks for the info. I've not been up to date with watches for some time and wasn't aware of this.
I suppose it's impossible to tell how that'll affect the vintage market. And when.
I only like vintage rolex models.
16713
14060
118238
etc.
The new cases, even post-maxicase, look somehow too chunky in my eyes; the latest dj for example has lost some finesse, particularly in the dials.
Even with this potential factory output, I wouldn't think the greedyass dealers would give up their racket instantly.
They've been getting too fat for too long to surrender it all without a struggle.

I agree with you on all counts, it's just that I've observed the ongoing Rolex mania and scarcity of the last few years has been dragging vintage Rolex prices pretty steeply up as well. I'd expect that if the mania dies down most vintage prices will return to more normal levels. I think most customers and dealers know that a used 16713 is not worth $15k.

I think they're some of the most beautiful and interesting watches on the market, but I'm not sure I have ever seen one that looks good on a wrist. Speculators mainly. The history of Patek grand complications is well, pretty complicated. They don't make very many of a given model and they are hard to get both because of their eye-watering price and the fact that Patek often pre-allocates many of their highly sought after, extremely labor intensive models like minute repeaters and grand complications.

The performance of older, highly complicated Pateks fetching auction prices 10x or 20x or 30x higher than their MSRP at the time has fueled the fire along with increasing demand. It's like Rolex on steroids, only the players have hundreds of thousands of dollars to throw away instead of being forced to buy a couple ladies Datejusts to get a GMT.

At least 2/3rds of the watch industry specializes in making watches that are close enough to looking like Gerald Genta designs / Rolex Submariners to still serve as status symbols but just different enough to appeal to guys on a budget / those who want something a little different (but still want to flex).

And it is funny. Imagine if 2/3rds of all cars on the road were Range Rovers and 911s and their more affordable clones.

I was very tempted to buy pic related on the grey a few weeks ago. They usually sell for around 8k. I still think it's a beautiful watch with nice proportions but yeah, it's basically a Nautilus/RoyalOak cope.
Thank God my AD called me for an Explorer just in time.

IMO the large majority of watches with integrated bracelet will look stupid and dated in a few years. Only the Nautilus and Royal Oak will remain relevant, as they are already iconic watches. Maybe the ALS Odysseus and Moser Streamliner will remain, as they look really different.

I early adopted smart-ish watches back when they were overgrown fitness trackers, before the modern ones hit the market. Eventually moved to a first gen Galaxy Watch Active. Nice for what it was, but 'what it was' didn't end up being much use to me. Went full circle back to actual watches. Though amusingly my current daily, an Oceanus, syncs time with my phone. I've gone from a dumb device pretending to be smart all the way to a smart device pretending to be dumb.

Yeah they're pretty good for that. Also stuff like falls and accidents, it'll call emergency services if it senses you've taken a very hard fall and don't cancel the call attempt within 2 minutes.

It's also been good keeping track of my sleep and my heart rate. It got me spooked enough to see my doctor once since I went past 220bpm during an intense workout.

You can of course wear whatever you want on your wrist, nobody's going to stop you. Odds are that guy is trying to make a sale, and since people these days want versatility from their watch, he'll feed you whatever you want to hear. I'm sure if you ask he will agree that a diver looks great with a tux.

But to my point, a diver will still look incredibly out of place, as a bulky, sporty, tool watch with a suit. It's a horribly overstated accessory, and most of the time it will crease your cuffs (unless you have your shirts tailored to accommodate a diver, which, again, will look dumb as it requires a lot of space).
