I really like Rolex watches. But I've been priced out completely over the last 3 years. A Sub is a great watch for under $10k but these people paying $20k for one or sucking off an AD to get one are cucked beyond belief. For $15k you are firmly in big boy territory with serious watches from JLC, Blancpain etc. I just don't get how you can justify it unless you only care about flexing, and even then you'll only really be impressing lower class people.

I thought their new CEO would turn things around. Think he started in 2018 or so. He has done a real shit job. The Due is a joke and they have made the entry level models worse. They continue pushing pointless collabs and lifestyle LARP instead of doing anything interesting. It’s frustrating because I like the design of the Luminor and the Radiomir and they have the considerable might of Richemont behind them, but they have lost the plot. Their prices have gone into the stratosphere despite them cutting costs any way they can and they are losing market share big time. I'm pretty sure they've gone full Chinese mode. They've opened a lot of new stores in Asia over the last few years. Panerai has settled into a niche in the west since they already had their time throughout the 2000s but a lot about their watches still appeals to Chinese sensibilities. I was wondering how they kept aggressively expanding their line when I know for a fact they have to be losing shitloads of money at least in America, but I think they're being propped up by Chinese new money discovering the brand for the first time.

I think it was inevitable, since they never really had any follow up to their basic designs.

It's very difficult to analyze the Chinese economy in the same way we do in the west. Consider the people who are buying luxury watches in China. They're very wealthy compared to the average citizen and likely hold a position of power. Now consider the extreme levels of corruption in China. Even if the economy is trending downwards, you're still getting your palms greased if you're in a position of influence. In fact, using Swiss watches as bribes was common practice until the government started taking a more serious look at it. Now they have to be a bit more subtle with it.

The Day Date I can get at retail, but I have to wait 6 months. Another AD down the road had a white gold and yellow gold Speedy Pro that I could walk out the door with for 20% off plus an alligator strap and matching deployment clasp (clasp would have to be ordered). They also had a rose gold Zenith Chronomaster Sport, which I like a lot. Precious metal bracelet is a sticking point for me. The yellow Gold Speedy will be around 28k, the white gold around 31k, so around 20-25k cheaper than a DD and no waiting. Ironically, the Rolex AD actually had a platinum DD for sale, which I would realistically consider should these first three jobs close around the same time. 10-15% of my first big pay day of the year is budgeted for a retarded watch purchase.
