I wear "specific house shoes" inside, or stocking / socked feet when not really dressed. When formally dressed indoors I wear proper formal leather shoes which are checked for any dirt on soles. Formality requires shoes, and I wouldn't require guests to remove shoes on formal occasion.

I genuinely feel not fully dressed when not wearing some type of shoes/footwear.

Front door mats both outside and inside entrance are for purpose of removing dirt and dust from shoes before entering houses and premises.

I think it depends on the region and social class in America. In the Upper Midwest most houses have a "mudroom" or at least an area by the door where you take off your shoes so you don't track in mud and fuck up the carpet.
