Can't imagine how much time and effort went into acquiring such a rare piece.
I actually don't mind some of the content on r/watches but I hate how much of a fucking hug box it is, all the annoying meaningless stock phrases, and how pointing out any of it would result in a ban.

Enough to the point where you'd be willing to pay more for it, though?

Most companies could put more effort into their finishing, but then they'd have to raise their prices and lose sales. An Oris finished to the standard of an ALS would still be an Oris even though it would cost $10k.

Dunno. I quite like the green and gold neo-Alpinist. Been scoping it out for a week or so now, in case I ever wind up having too much momentary income again, a job bonus or something. Only thing I don't quite like as much is the cyclops, which looks quite proud compared to how low the cyclops on e.g. SRPE37 goes.

What I'm saying is, post more pics of the Alpinist. Any of them, honestly. It's a sexy watch.

following on from a discussion in the previous thread, and seeing the allegation that some ledditors are referring to Alpinists as their 'grails' and while i find that indicative of extreme ignorance on their part, i realise i don't have one

i've only been into watches for the last couple of years, so i consider myself a learner at the beginning of their journey and unless one counts museum pieces such as Melanchthon's 'Nuremberg Egg', being of immense historical significance, rarity, and the height of craftsmanship, i can't think of anything i like that seems unattainable or of inestimable worth

what do you think, anon, is there a watch out there that you'd go on a metaphorical quest and fight dragons for ?

Any Philippe Dufour is grailworthy. They're already pretty much unobtainable. It's pretty much agreed that he makes the most beautifully finished movements on the planet. They are extremely low production and frequently fetch hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars at auction when one goes up. His contributions to watchmaking have been immense. He has been doing it for quite a long time and is likely getting ready to retire. It's not unusual for his watches to sell for a million dollars or more but I expect them to get magnitudes more expensive once he leaves watchmaking for good.

took me a minute to remember what an 'exit watch' implies, but that's helpful

this was interesting though:
>Anything else is trying to attach meaning in order to justify a "hobby" that is nothing more than consooming.

i suppose if i ascribe any 'meaning' to watches, its their ability to elicit delight and give one a momentary glimpse at beauty in the middle of the mundane, but since i neither see them as mere accessories to accentuate an outfit nor on the other end of the scale, ascribe to them the property of filling the empty pit of my soul, i'm not sure that i'm sufficiently consooming

Seiko is trying to move upmarket.

After Seiko killed the low end of the Swiss watch industry, the low end of the global watch industry is being devoured by smart watches and people just using their phones to tell the time.
Seiko has to move upmarket to survive. And, having already seen what collectors will pay for vintage/LE Seikos, figured that their buyers will tolerate higher prices.

I should've clarified that I'm talking about true ultra thin watches. It's true that there were quite a few ultra thin watches developed throughout the 70s and 80s, but the problem was that they were so fragile they would literally break when you put them on your wrist. Since then materials science has advanced enough such that they are actually wearable, even though it's a pretty risky proposition given their extreme value.

I'm not talking about quartz because I don't know or care about quartz.

It doesn't matter what watch you buy from those, they're literally all the same (swatch). And they're so painfully generic, this really is a bad price range for a watch like that. I would recommend saving up a little bit and maybe aiming at the league above that because it can already offer way more. Just one example, Tudor 1926

What is the real reason that people hate Grand Seiko watches so much?

The many ugly or boring models? That's a problem for many watch brands, doesn't make the entire brand bad.
Maybe the many limited edition watches? That's not an issue limited to GS either.
Or is it the fact that they have some $2000 quartz models? Just don't buy those models then, doesn't make the whole brand bad.
Perhaps that they're not based in Switzerland or Germany? Their brand image? Or that Seiko killed Swiss watch brands in the past? All of those have nothing to do with the actual watches.

>> No.17068281

The truth is that only a few sceechy autists actually HATE Grand Seiko and their reasons are irrelevant because they're mentally ill.

The vast majority of the watch buying public doesn't even know GS exists. Even the ones who do know about GS simply don't think about them at all.

Typically, people just replace them. The time and cost to disassemble, diagnose, and repair a quartz movement isn't worth it unless the watch is particularly rare or valuable. A simple three hander with day and date is going to cost less than a hundred dollars.

ETA Quartz movements are standardized by size, cannon pinion width, complication, etc. It takes two seconds to look up what movement is in that watch and what it's current replacement is.

Very true.

People in general get very thin-skinned when someone doesn't like their expensive bauble. They claim that they bought it because they like it not because what others think, but when you tell them that you think their Submariner is boring, they act like you've just called their wife ugly.

The reason for this is obvious: they were lying and they very much do care what others think. When they realize that their Submariner is not a path to instantaneous respect and, in fact, may be the source of some derision, they experience something of a psychological break.

I disagree a little. It's not that people cared more about low-cost vs high-cost; they didn't care about cost very much at all. On /g/ the focus was more on how the watch worked. So a Solar MB6 G-Shock was interesting from a microelectronics standpoint and a JLC perpetual calendar was interesting from a mechanical standpoint. Price never really came into play.
