I've gone to a few Rolex retailers in my city and each time they have little no no inventory, and at my most recent visit they literally had no inventory to buy, only a few watches that I could try on as exhibition.
So how are people getting contemporary Rolex watches or even last year's watches? Is it just that my stores are shit? Should I take a trip to Rodeo Drive or Dubai or Hong Kong or something and go to a Rolex retailer there?

I'm just finally in a good financial state so I wanted to pick up an item that I've always wanted. I knew Rolex was popular and that they were not made-to-order, but I didn't realize that there were just none anywhere.

I know that collectibles and other physical items skyrocketed in price during covid, I assume Rolex (and other high end watches) were a part of that mania?

I've never noticed the weight on it, feels like a typical watch. I bought it more than a few years ago, maybe something has changed since then?

The bambino does have a domed crystal, so it feels taller than it really is and I feel like it scratches a little easier if you aren't paying attention to it.

I'm getting married this fall and my fiance wants to get me a nice watch. I've been heavily leaning towards pic related, but I'm wary of having her spend $1200 on a microbrand. Any other recommendations?

Automatic

I don't like chronographs

I like some tooder watches but not the black bay 36, the clasp on the bracelet is really wide and it fits awkwardly on people with smaller wrists.
Also just the look of the face, it's too much of a dive watch face for a smaller sports watch like that.

dont worry too much about the wrist size, turned towards you your wrists always look smaller because of the two bones inside twisting.
most people wear 40mm, my ex girlfriend said she would never get anything under 40mm lmao

if you had normal sized wrists, what watch would you get then?

and if youre from geneva, i dont think wearing a Rolex would mean "showing off your wealth".
Rolex is from geneva as well, and fully in house, but im sure you know that already.

i like the tudor, i think its a nice watch.
but dont set yourself up for a diameter now, you might want to go bigger than 36mm as a male.

I considered the BB36 but the lack of in-house ultimately put me off, and it seems inevitable that they'll upgrade both the BB36 (to in-house) and BB58 (to a better clasp) in the next few years. £2-3K is an awkward amount to spend on a watch, above Longines/Oris but below Omega. It's mostly Tudor and the lower end of Grand Seiko in that price range for established brands (though Oris's new in-house stuff is around that price too).

Yeah but Rolex, even here, is considered very flashy. The really rich have AP, VC, or of course PP, but Rolex is not something I've ever seen a rich local wear (unless you work for them). At its heart Geneva is a very Protestant city, and the Swiss generally don't like showing off wealth. It's seen as bad taste or nouveau riche.
That's why Tudor appeals to me, but I think any other less flashy Genevan brand could be nice. I'll definitely wait and see if the BB36 (or above) get an in-house movement before making a decision. But thanks for your advice, I'll definitely try things on first, maybe my wrists aren't so bad.

have you checked the circumference of your wrists?
it depends on your type of course, but you can make a cutout from cardboard with the dimensions of the actual watch (just the top without the bracelet of course) to see how it would look, thats what i did.

its an easy way to check if it would fit, and doesnt require you to leave the house.

also, look at your wrists in the mirror when your just standing having your arms dangling from the side

>Rolex is not something I've ever seen a rich local wear
i thought Rolex is just a "normal" watch brand for the Swiss, something normal people wear. they arent that expensive taking into account how much the standard swiss person makes.

i like tudor a lot, now that you might consider different watch sizes you can see if they have one with an in house movement if youre not going for the 36mm, that would solve the not-in-house-movement problem.

>> No.17061648

>>17061625
>Tudor movements are made by a separate company
The "in-house" Tudor movements are made by a company called Kenissi, which Tudor is an owner of. (This is similar to the arrangement Rolex had with Aegler until the early 21st century when they finally brought all of their movement manufacturing in house.
The movements are made to Tudor's specs, but having a "separate" company make them makes it easier to sell those movements to other companies.

Middle-managers and foreigners. The kind of nouveau riche who can afford one but their sense of taste hasn't yet caught up to their wallet.
Also, like I said, old people who bought theirs when they were merely expensive but not ridiculous and, thus, weren't seen as a flashy watch, just a simple, well-made one.

Vintage watches are money pits not good investments
So much random bullshut out there with omega scrawled onto the dial. You have to learn how to shop for vintage watches, learn how to tell when one has the original dial, movement etc, you need to find a trusted watchmaker to services your vintage watch, just that will cost several hundred dollars, assuming he doesn't need parts or to make any repairs. I don't know why the thread op even suggests it, they probably hope you will buy some eastern European frankenwatch so they cqn laugh at you.
Go on yahoo auctions japan with some proxy service like zenmarket.jp and buy a vintage quartz credor, plenty of small cheap watches alwith decent quality movements even gold cases and you wont get scammed
