People like to use percentages, like "5% of your total liquid wealth".
But oddly enough the more money you have the higher the % of your total wealth you can afford to put into a watch.
That's because basic necessities like food still cost the same whether you're wealthy or not.

It's based on a 6r movement, they didn't need to make it bigger than the non gmt version. All the comments on articles about it are also complaining about the size.
It's also super thick but they still put a display caseback on it, they could have save half a mm or more by dropping it.

>> No.16012281

>>16012275
I agree about the thickness. I'm not a wristlet so 42mm doesn't bother me but needless adding thickness for a display case to show an industrially-finished movement is intolerable.

Omega's particularly bad about this. Their physical movements are not especially thick, but their most recent pieces are all thick as fuck.

No, it is too big and thick, and has a very technological look. The only G-Shocks you could get away with wearing with "business casual" type clothing would be either the Casioak or the 5600 square, and even then, just barely and not in all-black coloration.

I would guess that they wanted to keep the dial size the same as the regular model, so they the made the case larger for the GMT bezel instead of making the dial smaller to fit in the same size. This would have been fine if the regular sharp edged series was a more sensible 38mm, but since the regular model is 40mm, this results in a silly 42mm case on the GMT version.

Zaratsu is the folding of a watch bracelet over 1,000 times to give it unparalleled strength. It was created in Japan by bushido experts, later evolved into the zaratsu martial arts, and finally adapted into watchmaking.

“Zaratsu” actually refers to the German polishing machines acquired in the 50s from Sallaz Bros. The German “sallaz” is phonetically pronounced “zarats”. The Japanese picked this up, hence “zaratsu”. This polishing machine uses a high speed polishing disc, mounted vertically, where the craftsman typically holds the metal pieces (hands, case, etc.) on the side. This is the typical polishing technique used all over the world by jewelers, gunsmiths, and steel buttplug manufacturers. Japanese bushido zaratsu martial arts technique requires the warrior to hold the metal piece to the FRONT of the rotating polishing disc. This gives a uniform and even finish, but this is really goddamn hard to do. Typically, the craftsman needs several years of experience and training to apply zaratsu polishing on sellable pieces

There are basically three types of polishing machines used to polish surfaces on watch cases and bracelets with each time having different time/skill requirements and different drawbacks in finish.

The first is the high speed buffing wheel which uses a felt wheel spinning at high speed with buffing compound applied to it to polish surfaces. This is the fastest and least skill intensive way to polish surfaces, but it has a strong tendency to round over the surfaces and edges it polishes, leading to a 'lozenged' look where everything starts to look like a rounded over blob.

Intermediate in time and skill are lapidary polishers which use a flat belt or felted disc at slower speed to polish. These require more patience and skill to use, but they result in much less edge rounded and surface distortion than a a high speed buffing wheel does. This is the type of case and bracelet polishing done by most higher end watchmakers.

Finally, Sallaz polishing using a spinning tin disk with polishing compound applied. It has no give whatsoever and, if you use it with a steady angle and pressure, it can produce an optically flat mirror polish with no edge rounding whatsoever. The drawback is that if you have even small variations in angle or pressure on subsequent passes, it will be obvious to the naked eye. It takes years of practice to get good at this. See here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeIqY85QyqY . Even with jigs, the polisher has to be very careful to keep the angle and pressure consistent on each pass. There is a reason that very few companies use this type of polishing on their cases and bracelets.

>>16013061
>It’s hard for most people to see the difference, and it’s mostly discernible on a high resolution macro shot.
I disagree with this. The difference between even lapidary polished surfaces and Sallaz polished surfaces is obvious to the naked eye, with the optically flat Sallaz polishing having an almost 'spooky' effect compared to what most people's eye's expect out of polished metal.

If you want a Sallaz polished watch to be re-polished by GS during service, I believe they send it back to Japan for that.

If you have some confidence and the scratches are small, you could tape off the affected area and use some fine diamond polishing paste on a soft cloth and polish it manually by hand. The process of doing that is gentle enough that there's basically zero chance of you rounding any edges or creating optical distortion in the surface.

Good question. They have the meme sallaz (zaratsu) polishing and very complex angular case designs. The cases at least seem to be done to a very high standard, im not sure how the dials and hands compare, the movement's are just top chronometer grade eta movements so they are the highest finish level for eta machine finished basic movements but that probably doesn't stack up to grand seikos movement finishing, even if that is all done by machines as well for most of their movements.

just took this a picture of this. i wanted to show you watch guys what the vincero mesh bracelets look like. the mesh itself is fine, but the clasp feels incredibly cheap, to the point where i wouldn't put any kind of serious stress on it. i might steel a clasp from another mesh bracelet or something to replace it.

i hope you guys have a good weekend.

CASIO OCEANUS OCW-S100-1AJF
Wordwide (where there is a broadcast) radio atomic time setting, 41mm lightweight titanium case with a fairly short lug to lug length, sapphire crystal, really great looks, casio "tough movement" tech that automatically realignes the hands after a strong shock to the watch, around $500. No sub dials or extra shit on the dial just three hands for time and a date window.

I know, right? I love the design. Reminiscent of the big three luxery steel watches, which I like but can't afford. The bracelet alone is the real start. They didn't skimp on it at all for the price point.

The dial reminds me of the Nautlius, which is my favorite luxery steel watch. It's simple, well balanced and legible, but evokes a nostalgic and refined calmness to my emotions just by looking at it, just as the Nautilus does, but even more so because of the deep verdant green color.

When they start to become available and the QC on the markers and hands are up to snuff I will get one, even if I could afford a Rolex. I like it that much.

Those last two Citizens are 40mm rather than the 41.5mm of the Oceanus or the 42mm and 44mm of the first two Citizens. Design wise I like the Oceanus best here, and it will have world radio atomic sync (those Citizens are Japan only radio sync unless you emulate the freq), but I've also heard the second hand alignment isn't always dead on and you can't manually correct it, while you can on the Citizens.

I recently bought a Citizen PMD56-2952 and I'm very happy with it. Second hand alignment was perfect out of the box.

Obviously not, but clearly the trade-offs were widely considered worth it to go up to 4hz and even 5hz in the late pre-quartz era. Regulated balances also mitigated some of the trade-offs relative to the more traditional screwed balances anyway, as they didn't require as much of an increase in torque as screwed balances would have (mind you the regulated balances also needed the increased beat rates a lot more than the screwed balances did).

Salary vs Total Collection Worth

How much do you make and what is your collection worth?

I was on on $55,000 a year and had a $14,000 collection.

I've moved country (for my partner) I now make $19,000. Don't ask I know, I have to start for scratch now. I was in a family business. Got a lot of cash in hand.....

Should I keep 1 watch and sell the rest? I have $40,000 in savings but feel a bit stupid now having so much money in watches? Is it okay to work my shit job and have nice watched.

>>16014723
Just wait. Don't sell unless you need the cash for something important like a house. I don't know what country you moved to but hopefully the cost of living is way lower to make up for the salary cut.

MWC has a questionable heritage, i don't know how many watches they actually sold to militaries. There isn't much info about them online which makes me concerned about their quality, those CWC watches i linked are way nicer than their actual military issue watches. I saw that even the marathon has like 30 meters of water resistance. The new cwc models have 200 and a screw down crown, they are also slightly larger than the issue watches which is probably a good thing. The lume isint spectacular but it's a very nice watch that really does everything a field watch should. MWC is a bit of a gamble.

They're priced like a Grand Seiko with an ETA movement, and they use the same Sallaz polishing techniques.
So they're up there with GS in terms of external finishing.
