Anyone knows where to get a soft black strap or a metal bracelet for the Casio msg-s200 watch?
It comes on a really stif pink resin strap but I would like something else.

As a hobby they are good if you are into the history of watches and movements. You can pick up some great pieces for relatively little money since no one wants them these days.

To wear maybe not so much. You'd need a lot of confidence to wear one without shame and not look like a fedora wearing sperg.

They are not convenient. I used a pocket watch when I was a little kid because my grandpa gave me his old one. It was annoying taking it out of my pocket and if it has a chain it gets caught on things. Also if you have a phone you would need to keep them in separate pockets, due to electromagmetism.

How do you deal with the fact that the very nicest of affordable moon phase turns out to be a ladies watches? I don't mind the case size, in fact I prefer the classic look of sub 40mm, but the 18.5mm strap is really pushing it too far for me. Any options? From what I've observed on /wt/, the discussion about high horology watches and the discussion about sub-$200 watches is relatively civil and in good faith (there are exceptions to this). The discussion about entry to mid-tier luxury watches is where people tend to get their backs up, shitpost, etc. Just personal anecdotal observations.

Now, with that having been said, I want to have a reasonable discussion about mid-tier luxury watches. I am not in the market for any watch over $10,000, and will not be for the foreseeable future. But, I want to figure out where to start looking so that I might be able to more easily make a decision on what to buy when the time comes. I enjoy doing research about watches and so I would like to know where (as in what brand, model, reference, etc.) it would be most worth spending time doing research.

Categories that are important to me are as follows:
>Technology. I like mechanical watches but am most interested in watches that are technically innovative, accurate, etc. Note that I respect Spring Drive technology but I would prefer to own/collect more "traditional" mechanical watches that don't use that technology.
>Performance. I own a lot of things that are delicate; I want watch to be (relatively) tough, precise, and not something I really have to "worry" about day to day.
>Design. It doesn't matter to me how great the movement is if the watch is externally ugly.
>Finishing. Tied into design, I want the watch to look good and would appreciate things like compound curvature and sharp polishing. However I don't care about finishing that I can't see with my naked eye.
>Brand. This isn't the most important factor, but it would be nice to buy from a brand that is reasonably well respected and is "cool," but at the same time I don't care enough to pay a massive premium just for a brand name.

Where should I start my research, /wt/?

Omega have certainly done some interesting things with technology, movements and materials, but those are not in their cheaper sub $10k watches. Also the finishing in those cheaper watches is acceptable at best.

The only alternative I can think of would be Nomos. Fully in-house, good value for money, respected by watch-geeks. Also GS but that may fail on brand too.

Omega have used ceramic, titanium cases, even all titanium movements. Actually the latter Seamaster Aqua Terra Ultra Light would fit within budget. Their DeVille line exists to test out innovations. It was the first with the co-axial escapement.

As for their finishing its not that its bad its more the fact on some watches it seems 'cheap' compared to their price. It's middle of the pack when compared to their competition.

I would argue that the co-axial escapement is interesting technology, and Omega uses co-axial escapements in every current production mechanical watch. As far as materials are concerned, Omega is working more with ceramics lately and has managed to work out a process of producing ceramic that is finished like steel, which is interesting, but there is at least one example that is often posted here of how doing so can compromise the structural integrity of the watch case. It's one example that is posted over and over again, though, so I don't think there is enough data to suggest that their use of ceramics has any critical flaws.

With respect to finishing, Omega doesn't have a particularly strict set of guidelines or standards it adheres to so the quality of finishing varies depending on the watch. The bog-standard Speedmaster, for example, is a very bare-bones watch and you can see the orange peel on the spray painted hands from a mile away. The Seamaster Diver 300M has really nice compound curvature to the case and bezel but that watch has a polarizing design especially in its most current formation. As well I have heard that individual examples can have flaws so you have to examine the one you're going to buy fairly closely before purchasing.

Overall, Omega is an "interesting" brand; more interesting than Rolex I'd argue. They have a massive catalogue with some very fine watches and some ugly-as-shit watches. They do like 3 or 4 special edition Speedmasters per year. They clearly experiment a lot. On the totally out-there side of the spectrum, they have a completely handmade and finished central tourbillon that they charge $200k for. So if you want to go down the rabbit hole, Omega is probably a solid choice. You do have to hunt a bit more for a good Omega.

Grand Seiko SLGH005 meets all your asks, depending on whether you like the design. It has Grand Seiko's new direct impulse escapement, free sprung balance, hi-beat, 80hr power reserve, excellent external finishing, good movement finishing (for this price-range),

If you want something sportier you can look at the Tudor Pelagos and Black Bay 58, Rolex, Omega's Seamaster and Speedmaster Professional. All of these have trade-offs but are at least worth thinking about.

If you want something dressier there's JLC's entry level models. Personally I would go Master Control Date or entry level Reverso over the current entry level MUT models.

Seiko stopped using the movement in anything but Credors because it takes too much skilled labour to make (because it was designed in the late 1960s).

Omega was of the greatest series production watchmakers in the world in the pre-quartz era, but they struggled badly in the quartz era and ended up becoming part of the Swatch Group. Under the Swatch Group Omega's in-house movement and watch design and manufacturing facilities were shuttered and for a few decades Omega was just the highest priced product line coming out of a conglomerate manufacturing chain that made everything from cheap Tissots to Omegas in the same factories with the same employees and the same movements. Swatch almost destroyed Omega's reputation entirely in this period, until they began a serious long-term effort to return Omega to respectability. Personally I don't think they really started turning the corner until around 10 years ago.

very boomer and slightly crazy at almost $1000 for the gold model but get it if you like it. You might be very mildly annoyed using it, but unlike older LEDs that 100% need to be pressed the new puslar shows the time constantly, just different brightness.

There are many vintage LED watches, such as the russian Elektronika 1, $50-$150 on ebay and aliexpress has $10- $20 LED watches as well. They are definate cheap gacha mallshitters but some are very rad.

excellent response. the sinn 556 has brilliant lume, modern wr and sapphire and a movement that can be serviced anywhere.
for me the alpinist offers something kinda like an explorer but in a very, very different vibe somehow. like a japanese artist designed it after the explorer while on acid. like the SEXplorer it's more than the sum of it's parts.

>As well I have heard that individual examples can have flaws so you have to examine the one you're going to buy fairly closely before purchasing.
Just to make future purchases easier for me, which brand does not ever put out any flawed watches?

It's the name. Formex.

reminds me of those Coby headphones (instead of Sony) you used to see.

So many regrets not buying a like new one with the steel bezel on vacation two years ago. He was asking like 300 bucks for it.
