Yes, our hellish consumerist society craves accessories for self-expression and watches are one of the few common avenues for such available to men
This is why microbrands have exploded in number, and this is a good thing as it is a return to the golden days when any man could have an affordable mechanical timepiece running on standardized movements

>> No.16004783

>>16004770
Pretty much any microbrand offering a $300 NH35 or a $500 Sellita is worth it since advances in precision machining technology and the wider availability of materials means that you can get a good watch for an affordable price. You are expecting microbrands to compete with actual luxury wristwatches from brands that have been around 100 years, which is retarded. Nobody is saying that. But microbrands allow the average person to get a good mechanical watch for cheap.

This video shows the trade-offs between Seiko and entry-level "Swiss" brands at that price point quite well. The Seiko has much better external finishing and it's design isn't deliberately gimped to be less appealing to watch enthusiasts the way the Tissot is, but the 6R35 is pretty meh at a $1k price point against decent versions of the Powermatic 80, a 2824, or an SW200.

Continuing life with the squarepill. New annoyance: gunk sometimes collects beneath the bull bars. About once a week I wet a piece of paper towel and stick it underneath. This constitutes fuss in my mind and is unacceptable. I will find a better solution.
I am fiddling with my watch much less frequently during the day
I read the time more quickly and don't look like a dunce deciphering a clock.
I put in a fresh battery three weeks ago and I'm still within a second of time.gov.
The day of week, date, and month have been useful on several occasions. I did not have to adjust my watch on March 1st.
I have used the stopwatch a few times.

True. The only time you would need to wear a different watch is when you were at a social event, at work, or anywhere else you want to be taken seriously.

I'm just kidding. I have the same watch and wear it a lot. The perpetual aspect is pretty underrated until March rolls around. I have a moonphase with date watch I have to set with a stylus that is sitting in my closet at the moment because I don't want to mess with it.

I dunno, around 20 countries? I don't have goals. The reasoning behind what, the travel, or the watches? They're different. The travel? It's fun, broadening, mysterious, full of kismet, chance encounters, it blows my mind, satisfies my wanderlust. It makes life worth living. The watches? They're beautiful baubles and trinkets, they serve a function, telling the time, but they're also gorgeous to look at, finely honed and designed little perfect objects that bring me pleasure. They're separate and distinct from experiences I pay for, but they add to those experiences by their presence. Not by much, mind you, but all those stories accumulate in them, if they're special enough. I feel like I've started only collecting grails in the past couple years, and I'm only getting watches now that I couldn't have dreamed of wearing when I first started in the hobby nearly ten years ago. It's a satisfying feeling, having and using a thing that was totally inaccessible to me not so long ago. It's a tangible reminder that I've come a long way in not that long of a time, that if I could manage to acquire something like this... there's not much that I couldn't manage to do. I don't give a fuck what others think of them. If they recognize one of the watches or pay me a compliment, that's a lovely bonus and I'll be predisposed toward that person, but watches are very much an internally pleasurable thing. I'm not chasing status in others eyes, but in my own.

I'm the GS anon who responded to the other anon's travel query.

Honestly, anyone who would ask "what's so fucking great about travel, I can fuck whores right here in my backyard" is exactly the opposite sort of person who would understand anything I have to say, so I won't bother.

That said, sometimes I'm on the other side of the world, and I see a sunset, and it looks very similar to a sunset at home, and rather than feeling cheated out of my time and money and effort, I feel a sense of universal communion with the cosmos, a feeling of brotherhood and commonality. I'm like, "Hey that's cool... their sunsets are much the same as my sunsets. Same sun. Nice." Then I go eat some food that I've never had before, and enjoy that too.

It’s nothing too horrific. There’s one small indention on both sides of the watch, one push of the stylus forwards either the date or moon phase by 1 day. The actual annoying part is trying to judge the exact position of the moon phase because if you mess up you’ll be pressing it 30 more times.

The accuracy of the moonphase is totally irrelevant to me anyway so it’s more of just a mildly interesting thing I didn’t think about before owning one.

Thanks. I'm not sure exactly, JLC is quite funny about their styluses. The MUT Reserve de Marche uses the same pusher system for a date wheel in the top right of the dial instead. The MUT date which uses a normal date wheel at 3 has a quick set date using the crown. Something I only recently learned and should have realised sooner is that the watches sent to review sites, like those pics, are always of the highest standard. However the watches you see elsewhere like on Watchfinder are the 'mass production' releases. So what you can expect in the real world. Naturally those tend can be of inferior finish.

Even GS are not exempt from this trick.

>... crowdfunding continues to be a source of interesting and affordable designs, with the enthusiasm of watch lovers not significantly dampened by global and local forces. Supply chains in the primary source countries for watch components, specifically China, appear to have stabilised relatively quickly, due in large part to that nation’s assertive measures in containing the spread of the virus.

>On the surface this would seem to bode well for watch makers reliant upon Chinese production capabilities (pretty much every brand to some degree). However, with demand falling in the west and many brands downsizing or cancelling orders there will be a secondary and doubtless more dramatic round of plant closures and rationalisations in China, the exact depth of which won’t be known for some time. We may see watch brands who survive having to source new suppliers in the attempt to revitalise injured supply chains.

>What is telling is the number of manufacturing operations making direct contact with brand owners offering free design, prototyping and low MOQ production services in the hope of attracting new business to offset lost, delayed or downgraded orders. Some of these manufacturers have sophisticated and technologically advanced manufacturing capabilities, which leads me to believe they have been the victims of Swiss order downgrades (Swiss watch exports dropped ~22% in March - directly due to the Chinese lock down). This situation won’t last, with many Swiss companies already preparing for a more positive future.

>For many this is not the first time they have faced major drops in demand. Certainly, for major conglomerate players such as Swatch, Fossil and Richemont, who have a diverse range of offerings covering multiple price points, ripples of this scale can be more readily absorbed. Self preservation through scaling up or down in an agile manner is another key facet of these multi-product operators that guards against volatility in demand. It will be some of the smaller scale, less efficiency focused family owned / independent brands who struggle to remain competitive in the face of these forces. The next twelve months will be very telling in this regard.

The SKX was designed to be the cheapest possible mechanical diver with ISO dive watch certification (which requires individually pressure testing every watch and not just sample testing, adding a fair bit to manufacturing costs).

With it off the market, I'm fairly sure that the Seiko Turtle is now the cheapest mechanical dive watch on the market with ISO dive watch certification, and will remain so, as it's not likely to be cost effective for any other manufacturer to even try to put a mechanical ISO diver on the market for SKX like prices.

Today if you want an inexpensive ISO diver you're best bet is the Citizen BN0150/0151 eco-drive quartz watch.

It's cope because that exact same argument could be used on all the other cherry picked "bad" examples from any brand. What evidence do you have that it's a QC issue? Your proof is purely anecdotal.

Pretty good. Lots of nice churches in Tokyo. Hiroshima and Nagasaki also have an interesting history with the church. I'm currently working to build up an online community of Japanese and non-Japanese Catholics.

Yea, I've spent a lot more on travel than watches. I think I've been to 56-60, pertty all over the world. I fly to Japan every year (based in UK) as it's my favourite place to go. Travel then watches.

Why are you people retarded. Those are two different models. The bottom pic is almost double the price of the first, it's a limited edition. It even says it in the fucking ig post.

I love the my Grand Seiko, I think it's the best looking ref they make. I'm not a fan of their braclets, thickness and many models have date window, which I'm trying to avoid.

If your in Japan, in all honestly you have a lot of options for watches.

JackRoad is amazing btw. GS's finishing is brilliant >>16005930 and I do think a GS would fit into your collection nicely but on your salary I would start looking at PP, AP and VC. You can have a lot of fun with Omega but Japan is so safe, no need to worry.

I go to Nakano Broadway and visit JackRoad like once a week. It's crazy. You see whole walls full of Rainbow Daytonas, $100k+ PP, ALS, VC, and AP. No way you'd dare do that in NYC. It's crazy.

Next on my list is a GMT, either a Batman or maybe Omega Seamaster version. Would also love an ALS. Not really into PP/AP sports watches but a gold Nautilus/Aquanat/Royal Oak would be pretty baller.

I have no idea which GS to get but I think eventually I will cop one of the dress watches.
