Feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the strap options and stuff. Do I want leather, velour, nato, perlon, something else? What colors or brands (am in EU/GER). For everyday wear, that is. I read the pastebin but it's so much to take in. Would like to stay under 30 for a single band, 40 at most if it's really good.

I liked the look of the Eulit perlons but they don't have 19mm options unfortunately. Taking recommendations.

Well prepare to be underwhelmed, there are a lot less options when looking for 19mm straps. Fluco are German and make decent 19mm straps that are in your price range, so you could look at them. If you're looking for straps for the watch you posted then I'd recommend looking at less dressy brown leather straps, it's a classic look for black dialed watches.

You might want to look at third party sellers, they'll have a lot more choice (e.g. the US seller holbensfinewatchbands.com has 38 19mm Fluco straps), the German company Di Modell also have a lot of 19mm straps but again check third party sellers.

The King Seiko 45-7001 I bought from you is no joke in that department either. It runs within +/- 2spd in all six positions over the first 24 hours of wind.

One chronometric advantage those hi-beat movements have that doesn't get talked about much is they resist timekeeping deviations from wrist movements notably better than 4hz movements do. As a result they seem to tend towards having less deviation in rates between worn and resting than 4hz movements do.

In general, I wish worn vs resting rates was thought about more. So much effort is put into testing for positional variation, temperature variation, power reserve variation, but no one seems to test worn vs resting rates in any sort of systematic way.

I was looking for a King Seiko but I've stumbled upon a Lord for about $80 in perfect working condition... but as you know it's 34mm.

Are Lord's even close to King's (I know they were cheaper) and/or is this too small for a watch and should I keep looking?

nato style (one piece) is more secure, if one springbar fails your watch will be still attached to your wrist. For two piece setup if a springbar fails your watch will hit the floor.

but two piece generally looks better, and the watch sits lower on your wirst. Also if you have a display caseback/decorated caseback this will not block it.

What's the reference? Most Lord Matics were closer to 36 I think.
LMs and (automatic) King Seikos used the same movement families (56 from Suwa and 52 from Daini) so in that sense they are a lot closer than say Presage and GS lines today. More comparable to the lower vs. upper range of Presage maybe, also in style and quality.
Both movement lines are good thin modern automatics, best that Seiko put out before the quartz crisis. 52 movements are superior in specs, but 56 are also nice though they have some parts that age poorly. The KS versions are better jeweled and adjusted, and 56KS are 8bps when 56LM are 6bps (all 52 movements are 8bps).
$80 for a LM is a good price if it really is in good condition.
There are also Lord Marvels, which are an earlier line. They are hand winders, and not that special except the late ones with the 5740c movement, which was Seiko's first 10bps movement (and the 2nd in the world I think).

Hmm, so Lord Quartz isn't a good choice?
I'm really confused by all the differences between them since they seem so large and minor at the same time.

A Seiko Quartz Type II would be 'better' than a Lord Quartz? Since I can find one of those for $40 working. That'll save me $20

>What was the greatest deviation you had from testing conditions to the real world?

The deviation between the crown down position in static testing and the rate the watch actually runs when worn on the wrist can easily be +/- 5 SPD on lower end and/or lower beat movements. My personal experience with regulating watches is that I usually end up trying to juggle between the rate the watch runs dial up stationary for ~8 hours a night and the rate the watch runs on the wrist for ~16 hours to try and get the over and under to roughly cancel each other out. It was doing these regulations where I first started to notice that the rates that mechanical watches will run on the wrist are not the same as they will run in the same position(s) when stationary (i.e. crown down and crown right).

>Which modern and vintage watches you do you are the most underrated?

For vintage watches I would say the Seiko 701x chronograph is one of the more underrated models. I can't believe how cheap they remain on the vintage market considering that they have several models with stacked hour/minute chronograph hands on one subdial, and have a flyback mechanism. Those are some pretty damn high end features to find on a relatively early mass produced automatic chronograph movement.

Not sure for a modern one, I'd have to thinka bout it more.

>Thanks again fren! You're awesome!

To be clear, I'm not the poster with the huge collection you were talking to last thread, I just traded him a vintage watch for the King Seiko 45-7001 he owned, and I happen to have somewhat similar interests in watches as he does.

Type II was Seiko's first "affordable" line of quartz watches (so around the same price as mid-high range mechanicals instead of much more expensive), so in that sense it sits below Lord Quartz, but the differences in e.g. accuracy are minimal, especially after 50 years. There just seems to be much more variability and interesting designs in the Type IIs, including models that are outwardly very similar to late King and Grand Seikos.

The early lines of Seiko quartz are a bit confusing because they changed names and movements often as the development picked up speed.
After the very first ones they had the QT, QR and QZ lines from highest to lowest grade (these were labeled 2002, 3003 and 4004 for exports). Then those essentially became Grand, King and Lord Quartz. Then there was Superior, which was even higher and extremely expensive, and soon the (relatively) cheaper Type II was introduced.

Silverwave is more of a label for water proof sports models than a line-up of its own.

>Is there a theme around your collection like accuracy anon?

In general I really enjoy highly functional designs. In vintage watches this draws me towards highly functional, series produced, late pre-quartz era mechanical watches that were relied upon as functional timekeeping tools and not just fashion accessories or status signaling devices.

I have a King Seiko 45-7001, King Seiko 5256-8010, a Rolex Datejust 16233 (my father's) and an Omega Speedmaster Mark 4.5 with the Lemania 5100 movement that fit within this theme. I am eventually looking to add an Omega with a 564 movement, a GP HF Chronometer, a Seiko 7016 chronograph, and a few other things down the road in keeping with this theme.

For modern watches I just tend to buy any watch where I like the design and quality for the price, though still with a preference for highly functional and/or austere designs. I enjoy both digital and analogue watches, both mechanical and quartz. The quality just has to be right for the price in my eyes, and I have to like the design.

>If so, what's your favorite timepiece and what's your grail?

As >>15997817 guessed, my favourite would by my 1972 King Seiko 45-7001 because it combines extremely impressive mechanical accuracy with a very austere expression of Seiko's grammar of design styling language, which I quite like.

My grail watch would be a Dufour Simplicity in 37mm with the roman numeral dial (pic related).

I noticed this too, but they still have the 38mm A386 reissue on the "store" section of their site as well as several A384 models. I don't think Zenith runs a particularly well-organized website so I wouldn't take it as truly indicative of their current production.

Don't assume any vintage watch has any water resistance. It may have some water resistance, may not; best not to risk it. Take it to a professional who can evaluate the quality of the gaskets (and replace any if possible/necessary) as well as the sealing of the case back/crown/etc.

Biver's career has been built on applying modern marketing principles to the Swiss watch industry and encouraging brands to ignore the limitations of tradition and good taste and to just make whatever tasteless oversized shit that sells, regardless of the medium-to-long term reputational damage it does to the brand.

He is one of the people who "saved" the Swiss watch industry during the quartz crisis essentially by throwing away the traditional design and manufacturing that made it special, reallocating large sums of money from manufacturing to marketing, and chasing short term profits at all costs. Biver is up there with Nicolas Hayek (who founded The Swatch Group) in being responsible for how cancerous the modern Swiss watchmaking industry has become.

I hear you but what other option did the swiss really have?
Keep making traditional shit that no one will buy? They were between a rock and a hard place and their two other main national pastimes of banking and mercenaries kinda aren't something you want to be exclusively known for.
Other than mountains. They have nice mountains.

If it wasn't for business men like him, the luxury watch industry would have been sold to the Japanese, who would have ran it all into the ground.

It was on their site, I have been watching them on the Grey Market dry up and price increase as well. I think it gone, they want to push the new daytona homage as the next el primero, the state of zenith. I near bought into the brand as well, I'm glad I went with JLC

The market for watches is changing since the recent explosion of modern Rolex. Thanks to the internet, mechanical watches have been hotter than they've been in 3+ decades. People are looking back to tradition. The oversized trend will go away.

>> No.16000298

>>16000276
The option would have been to try and preserve the legacy brands in fact not just in name while still modernizing them. And it is in fact the case that the brands that best preserved their traditions and manufacturing capabilities while modernizing ended up preserving the most long-term value (e.g. Rolex), while the brands that most totally threw away their traditions are mostly all looked down upon (Longines, Zenith for multiple decades, Omega for a few decades, etc.)

>>16000278
The Japanese actually respect tradition. If Seiko had gotten their hands on Omega/Lemania/Tissot they would have at least tried to preserve the design and manufacturing talents of those brands rather than throwing them all away to put Omega and Tissot labels on conglomerate produced shitters for a few decades.

>>16000283
Hayek brought together several traditional watch brands under The Swatch Group and then promptly liquidated those brands independent design and manufacturing capabilities, essentially turning them into marketing departments for generic ETA powered watches all made in the same manufacturing chain and just having different labels put on them. The Omega, Tissot, Hamilton, etc. that exist today have no real connection to those brand's histories and traditions except the names and design IP.

Sad if this is true as I thought the 38mm reference with the blue dial was Zenith's best current production watch and was one I had my eye on. The Chronomaster Sport does nothing for me for several reasons beyond the similarities to the Daytona. For instance, from what I have seen, the finishing of the dial is not particularly good & I particularly dislike the design of the counters which look like plastic. The design of the limited edition "striking tenth" El Primero with the ceramic bezel was leagues more distinctive and premium looking than the Chronomaster Sport (pic related).

Zenith like all companies is trying to simplify its production line and by all accounts the cal. 3600 is simpler/easier to produce than the original El Primero movement so one can understand why they would throw their eggs in that basket.

Which JLC did you get?

I did research into this; while wrist size is genetic it is also developmental. As we have established wrist size is basically all bone(unless you're fat but you'd have to be truly fat to see any difference), well it turns out the thickness of bone is affected during development by physical use. If you have to chew tougher foods as a child you will have a stronger jawline and if you do more physical activity involving your arms as a child(like playing sports or helping your dad mend things) the bones in your arms will grow thicker.
