Non fatty here and not brain damaged from watch marketing.

Recommend me a watch under $300 and under 38mm. My only requirements are sapphire, 100-200m WR, and a timing bezel.

I don't think you understand how much skilled hand labour goes into hand finishing a movement to HH standards, or how expensive that many hours of skilled labour is.

Grand Seiko's HH models are manufactured in a separate production chain than regular GS models. They are made by the Micro-Artist Studio which operates like a small independent watchmaker with a small number of highly skilled employees making a small number of watches per using using extensive amounts of hand labour per watch.

If more people had some familiarity with the huge gulf that exists in any manufacturing discipline between mass produced products and handmade, hand finished products, it would be easier for them to understand why hand made and hand finished watches are inevitably going to be expensive to produce.

At a 1k price point you will have a genuinely hard time finding watches with better external finishing. While the dial furniture and hands aren't anything to write home about, the case, dial and bracelet all offer very good finishing at that price. Most other brands in the same price range will have similar issues with there hands and dial furniture, but will also have mediocrely finished cases, dials and bracelets on top of that.

If you want external finishing from Seiko that will stand up to macro scrutiny you will need to spend a fair bit more than that to get a model made in the GS production chain.

A $200 edifice won't have external finish on the same tier as upper mid-range Seikos, nor will it have a mechanical movement (which are still more expensive to make than inexpensive quartz movements).

Casio models with similar external finishing to upper mid-range Seikos are in the Oceanus line, because Casio literally outsources the manufacture of the cases and bracelets to Seiko for those. Casio Oceanus models are also not $200.

Yes, but the Oysterquartz is different enough in design from the Royal Oak to not be a straight up copy of it. It's more like a homage inspired by the style of watch. That Tissot from the late 1970s is almost a 1:1 copy of the Oysterquartz design. I think that is enough of a difference to matter.

HAQ movements, particularly those that utilize metal construction and are jeweled, cost more to make than normal quartz movements, even those with extra features like the Casio Oceanus line. Mechanical movements are generally significantly more expensive to make than regular quartz movements because metal construction and more skilled labour required to assemble them.

Seiko spent years trying to expand the global market presence of their their higher end Seiko and GS offerings to little success because globally their attempts to offer good values up and down their range caused the average watch consumer to look down on them as a cheap value brand.

So now, they are going full Swiss and making their entry level and mid-range much worse values as well as much more aggressively pricing their near-GS models and new GS models. The sad part is that it's already starting to *work* and you can see perceptions of Seiko's brand and GS's brand improving in real time among non-autists.

each piece on its own is great, but they make a collection that is both full of redundancies and full of holes.

You don't have a dress watch (No, the Seamaster is not a dress watch, James Bond is a fictional character). The GMT makes the Seamaster and Explorer unnecessary, unless you plan on diving deeper than 100m.

The Speedmaster is nice, but it's also the most basic bitch chrono. You know why people like it? BECAUSE IT'S FUCKING CHEAP. They tell people it's because of space or they like a manually-wound chrono or some shit.

Also, do you need a Chrono? How often do you time shit?

Thanks all for the feedback. This "four watch" collection is something I have been toying with for a little bit; not married to it by any means but something I thought would be cool for the following reasons:
>all steel sports watches. one anon said "you don't have a dress watch." I acknowledge that none of these are dress watches; I already have a dress watch I love and none of these watches would replace it. these four watches wouldn't form the totality of my collection. Also, I just like steel sports watches
>two omega, two rolex
>one watch represents each of land (explorer), sea (seamaster), air (gmt-master ii), and space (speedmaster)
>both omegas are "professional" models
>both rolexes are oyster perpetual models
>two of the watches have dates, two don't
>two of the watches have rotating ceramic bezels, two don't
>two of the watches use circular indices, two use bar-style indices with arabic numerals on their dials
>two of the watches have crown guards, two don't
>both omegas have coaxial escapements
>all watches are chronometer certified

I already have the Seamaster, which was a gift given to me a few years ago.

Thanks anon! But like I said in >>15989827 it's just something I'm toying with and would ultimately take me years to accumulate.

They were all redundant. A steel sports watch ~40mm give or take on a bracelet. Let's be honest, aside from the chronograph, they're all basically the same. The Omega had a blue dial, so that was neat, but that was about it.

I swapped out a bunch of straps for the bracelets, but I prefer bracelets so that didn't help, and the Rolex bracelet is the most comfortable.

Anon if you're selling an entire horder's watch collection can't you get something a bit more premium than a Kamasu.

>> No.15989921

>>15989904
I would get the red Kamasu. Red dial watches are rare, and when you find one it's either shit quality or very pricey. The Kamasu does it well and it's got a really nice design. It's the kind of watch that can be your one and done if you just buy some different straps with it and it has its own style.
The Samurai is nice and all but it's like a young man's watch because it's got this aggressive industrial kind of look to it. If you can pull it off it is cool and the case and dial are nice to look at because of all the dimensionality so it might be more fun to look at in the long run, but I just don't think it has the timelessness and versatility of the Kamasu which feels like a modern classic.
Alternatively you could get the red Kamasu and the blue Samurai and you basically have a well rounded collection right there. The Kamasu easily dresses up on a leather strap.

Do you actually know why you want these? Because you know that no one will care when you try and explain what they are and why it makes the movement "better".

>hacking seconds
Doesn't matter on a chronograph. The running seconds subdial is just to indicate that the watch is running. If you want to time something, you've got the fucking chronograph function.

>chronometer certification or better
This is useless. Rolex marketing has made you believe it's actually indicative of accuracy. It's just paying a third party to say "Yup, it's good." JLC, for example, doesn't bother paying COSC so they can be allowed to use the word "chronometer".

The JLC Polaris Chrono is great, by the way. Get that one. Wear something you literally won't see on every beginner watch geek's wrist.

I want a column wheel because it’s a more classical design and has better pusher feel. I want a vertical clutch so the chrono seconds starts without any jump and I can leave it running for however long I want without having to worry about wear and tear.

I wouldn’t use the hacking function to time anything, I just like the ability to sync to a reference time.

Cosc certification is the least crucial of the criteria but I like knowing that the watch is rated by a third party as having a certain accuracy. It’s just something I like.

The only thing I dislike about the JLC is that there’s no constant seconds so the dial has a bit less visual interest when the chrono isn’t running and you can’t immediately tell that the watch is still ticking.

It's my understanding that the vertical clutch is more responsible for the pusher feel than column wheel vs. cam actuation. A cam actuated chrono may be more difficult to start or feel as if it "thunks" into motion because the cam has a more forceful motion than a column wheel. Some prefer the "sharpness" of a cam actuated chrono. The vertical clutch generally is what is responsible for the lack of jump.

All this is kind of moot because as you have experienced first hand, there are well made and regulated cam actuated chronos that feel just as good as column wheel chronos and there are also lateral clutch chronos that don't have a perceivable jump.
