this lmao, you'll realize real quick it was the prestige you wanted and not the actual watch when you wear it for two months straight and nobody compliments it. Paying any more than $500 for a watch is a waste of money.

this.
literally nobody cares about watches these days.
unless you're a richfag who hangs around other richfags then you are literally wasting your money because a silver fossil watch is enough to impress normies.

Try to make yourself like Vostok or something else with character and in the $100~ range. Fucking rappers are wearing swatches now, buying a luxury watch gives you about as smart of an investment as buying a new car.

Again I totally agree they shouldn't, but like I said, the problem is that none of those people think that describes them. They think because the fantasy they have involves them being complimented, that they are buying it "for them" not considering that is entirely dependent on other people giving a shit, which as we both know they won't. So I don't think the solution is to say "don't buy it unless you want it for yourself" because most guys, sad as it is to say, don't actually know how to tell if they want something because they want it or want something because they want other people to like it.
I'm not sure how to solve that though, maybe tell people "don't buy it unless you are comfortable with no one else liking it" or something?

But yeah seriously people should just buy replicas or fuck just get a god damn Invicta because most people think flashy and expensive are the same thing anyway

Don't tie your happiness to objects. I'd love a Lange but it will never happen.

I bought a Sinn 556 which in the watch world is poverty tier but more than 80% of the population will ever spend on a watch. I absolutely adore. People might notice it in passing they will probably never comment on it and never assume it cost as much as it did.

Also liking watches doesn't have to translate into blind consumerism.

Obviously not imply Dalai lama is a consumer whore. Just that you can appreciate watches and craftsmanship without becoming a slave to consumer culture.

if you go on reddit who can see people who have "collections" and it's nothing more than a trolley dash of utter shit. You can enjoy watches without constantly consuming thousand in watches, the same as you don't need to go buy old masters paintings to enjoy art.

Yea I mean he's obviously enjoying them for what they are. I doubt he cares that it's a Rolex. I was just being facetious. I agree with your POV. OP sounds like he needs to get off the hedonic treadmill.

Watches can either be enjoyed as art/for the craftmanship or as a status symbol. Obsessing over purely expensive watches suggests op is doing the latter.

>> No.15987918

I own 3 Tudors and a Rolex Oysterdate and I love them because they hold sentimental value to me, but luxury watches are a meme and aren't really all they're cracked up to be. I'd not waste my money if I were you. Go out and buy something around the £500 mark and you'll be equally as happy as you would be if you bought something for over a grand.

kind of sad to think about really. maybe I'm just different but a watch is the last thing I would want to be complimented on. It would be nice to talk watches with someone else who is into it, but otherwise no, Id rather be complimented on how my clothes look or how I smell or something like that.

Anon! There are SO many watches in the sub $100, sub $50 even. If you find a reputable shop I'm absolutely convinced you can find a second hand Casio or perhaps even an absolute capolavoro from my beloved Seiko.

Good luck Anon, and remember, don't let the watch snobs tell you that there's some barrier to entry to enjoy the wonderful hobby that is horology :)
