What sold gold watches does /wt/ like?

>> No.15973739

>>15973530
It's not quite that simple. The standards to which a modern Rolex is manufactured are quite a bit higher than the standards they were made to in 1968.

If you look at the market today, i believe the Tudor BB58 is the least expensive watch on the market that is comparable to a Rolex submariner in terms of external finishing and having an in-house, free sprung balance, balance bridge movement at $3500.00.

Also, watches of comparable quality today are manufactured in locales that have massively higher wages for skilled labour today than the late 1960s (Switzerland, Germany, Japan), and making watches like this requires a large amount of capital investment.

Basically, I think there are good reasons that no one is trying to sell watches of this caliber for less than $3,500, so I don't think you can just look at inflation in a vacuum.

Aesthetically makes the watch face crowded. Functionally they are great if you'll actually get use out of them. Slide rule is the only reason I own an SNA411.

>>15973807
It's pointless. People say dive watches are a LARP because most people who own them don't dive, but it's easy to see how a non-diver could still want a robust watch with water resistance and a timing bezel.
But if you are actually doing something that requires a slide rule you will have access to many specialized tools that just do the job faster and easier. This goes for a normal person as well. It's a basically useless complication on a watch. Pilots would have no need of it because using the slide rule while flying a plane is insane which is why of the pilots that own Breitlings and such, they never actually use the slide rule, it's just a status thing or they eschew Breitlings altogether and just use GMT watches.

They may look like "straight dress" watches by today's standards but what qualified a watch as a sports watch back then wasn't design but technological content.
From the late 1930's up until about 1960 a sports watch was a watch with a fully jeweled shock-resistant time-only movement fitted in a sturdy all stainless steel/at least 20 micron gold-filled stainless steel back case with anti-magnetic and water resistant properties.
People who could afford to and whose line of work made it a necessity were wearing sports watches, and if naught else then advertising and their relatively high price starting from half a month's wage of a skilled worker made them aware of it.
Pic rel is the LIP "expedition watch" worn by Maurice Herzog on the 1950 French Annapurna expedition.

On the new much expensive Bluetooth ones from what I saw you have both. Surely the oriental merchant it doing this on purpose!?

But really, I prefer analog with a bezel to digital. You can quickly set the bezel to whatever you want. To time minutes, hours, mark a certain time. Retroactively start timing from few minutes earlier, etc. And then at a glance, time, date, timing, everything is visible, and it gives much better immediate visual perception of time frames. You can't time precisely down to a milisecond like a proper chronograph of course but for everything else it's better.

I have a Louis Cartier Tank that has been a universal hit. I also have an old 36mm two tone Datejust that girls seem to like. I like it because it is sleazemaxx, I think girls like it because it’s the most recognizable Rolex and has gold on it. Nomos has also done well with them which isn’t surprising. Minimal but fun designs, they do colors well and their movements are pretty to look at.

I typically wear one of those on the first date. A watch won’t get you laid but it’s a quick way to signal you have a little money and aesthetic sensibility. The downside is if they ask how much they cost. It’s impolite to do so but most people aren’t very aware of these things. I’ve considered lying but that’s a bad way to start off. It’s not a huge deal but I have had a few girls ask about a certain watch and have their eyes about pop out of their heads when they learn what I paid. I just frame watches as a silly personal affectation and that seems to work.

Regarding type of girls/quality of date I haven’t noticed anything. I don’t wear anything really outrageous like a solid gold submariner. It wouldn’t surprise me if that would make an impact with a certain type of girl.

It has a similar thing going on with the case that a Rolex oyster perpetual does, with the polished sides and bezel but with an entirely brushed bracelet. The bezel is less domed than the op bezel though, so it might be a bit more prone to scratches, but I can't daily it and will pretty much only wear it when I go out to breakfast or dinner at cafes/restaurants/too friends and families houses so I am not remotely worried about it. I'd personally be more concerned on scratches on something with polished links in the bracelet or a larger clasp

Looking at yourself in the distortion free polished reflections is interesting. I think the polishing and workmanship is displayed or more noticeable on the dial with the literal perfection on the finishing on the hands and indices and glistening you get from the markers in the sun. My op39 had a black dial that had a slight sunburst effect going on it bright light, this is the opposite, the harsh light on the matte dial makes the dial almost appear as a flat charcoal and only further highlights how perfect the hands and indices are

49mm lug to lug
12.2mm thick
Double domed Sapphire, screw down crown, 200m wr etc etc
I would say the handset is heavily inspired by some omega arrow hands
I wish the lug length was a little shorter, 47mm would be ideal i think

I'm going to assume some of that thickness is the crystal. tl;dr the 2xxx coaxial Omega movements have an issue where all the benefits of the coaxial in reducing wear are negated by omega using a very specific and minimal amount of lube, and then since it's a complicated movement you probably have to have Omega service it and then the service cost is always inflated. This may have been fixed on the newer movements. It doesn't really matter because you will only have to service the watch once every 10 years anyway.

That is much better because not only is it better built, with a real mechanical movement, but it's flashy due to the depth of the dial while still being simple and classic, rather than that chrono which "looks nice" because it has a lot of shit on the dial but has nothing to offer beyond that. The cocktail time is a dressy watch that looks great in fancy occasions without being garish, and you can put a duller band on it to dress it down for casual wear as well. It can last a lifetime. To spare the long explanation, if you buy a pre-owned Omega with the 2500 series movement you should have it serviced by an official service centre every five years precisely if the watch was getting worn regularly because Omega's first co-axial movement can start damaging itself it if runs too long between services.

In theory the newer 8500 series shouldn't have the same issues, but it will still need to be a few more years before I have complete confidence that Omega successfully addressed the fundamental issues with their implementation of the co-axial escapement.

Yeah it's an autism thing
My watch keeps track of the month and year, but there's no way to display it, even with button presses, which pisses me off
