They may not be to your taste, but Grand Seiko's designs are definitely not unoriginal. Seiko has had their own unique 'house style' since the 1960s, and today they add tons of uniquely textured dials to that.

I really like this. This watch is basically exactly what I asked about a few times in these threads, but it doesn't *completely* fit my autistic preferences. I think it's a great "ultimate modern field watch" - it feels rugged, it has solar power, it has a day/date, it has atomic time, and it actually LOOKS like a no-frills mechanical field watch, it doesn't have random bullshit on the dial like Edifice watches tend to have.

I only wish it was slightly more tacticool.

Why do you think longtime Rolex collectors are completely checked-out of the new Rolexes?
Sure, they'll get a Sub or two for flipping (and why not? It's easy money.) but their pursuit remains vintage pieces.

The rest is literally just hype, no different than why Patek is cancelling the Nautilus.

I was considering swapping that chapter ring for a non-lumed one because the paint is quite sloppily applied, but the watch looks a bit too clean overall then, to me at least. Another option would be to take the chapter ring out and scrape the lume off and clean it, and fit non-lumed hands. I will probably buy another one in bad condition to use for parts and maybe i'll swap some parts as well later on. It was my grail watch before i got it, i'm a poorfag so i'm really quite happy with what i have at the moment.

It was Daini Seikosha's first model with a method to quickset the date, which it does by having a hexagonal button in the crown that you can push in to advance the quick-set (pic related). I found an amateur watchmaker's site that has a pretty good write up about the watch, if you're interested: https://adventuresinamateurwatchfettling.com/2016/11/12/a-technical-tour-de-force-seikomatic-p/

Yeah, that guy has been an extremely useful resource since I started working on vintage Seikos myself, the pictures are great, especially since some movements only have bad photocopies of the service manuals available, if even that.
Have a 5146 Presmatic (a later, hi-beat development of the 51 line) coming in atm, after that I've finally worked on something from all of the late 60's, early 70's thinner Seiko automatic movement lines (so 83, 56 and 52 lines in addition to that). Seriously great movements, especially the higher end versions, too bad moder Seiko is mostly thick 7S derivatives.

I don't think so, the Royal Oak was for Bulova initially around '72, they rejected it (lol) then he jumped ship to AP and made it for them. And I guess since he had presented the plans to Bulova initially they still had the option to use it, so they did? Confused about that one. But at that point it was already a hit for AP, so theirs just came off as a knock-off, which I guess it was, so they discontinued it.

Yes, that's nice and casual and goes well with lots of earth tone casual outfits.
The general rule of thumb is if your watch is really shiny and has a loud dial like the cocktail time, you want to dress it down. It comes with a shitty quality "fancy" strap to dress it up and make it extra fancy so if you want to dress it down you need something leather, neutral tone, flat. Milanese won't work because it's adding more shine, you want less. That strap looks good.

The 55x/56x/61x/75x family that preceded it was one of the greatest mass produced mechanical watch movements of all time. The prices for 75x powered models with 70s-esque styling weren't too out of hand, last time I looked. 56x models and 55x and 56x models with more classic 60s styling are much higher.

My dad was a boomer with a peak boomer Rolex (16233 two-tone) and was friends with a jewelry store owner who had a lot of different watch brands when I was a kid, and once I learned how mechanical watches work I found it fascinating how springs and gears could be made to tell time with 99.99%+ accuracy.

>> No.15971981

It does but I've heard this as well. I imagine when it's stopped, that gear is under some sort of tension, whereas if it's running it's clicking along happily.

It's because it uses a vertical clutch, and this clutch is under tension when the chrono isn't running. Another piece of advice I've heard is it's better to reset the chrono when it's closer to 12:00 rather than 6:00.

It's a vertical clutch so essentially when it's stopped the mechanism is under constant stress, running the chrono will release the mechanism. Here's my 6139, sadly not a Pogue but I like it regardless.

You don't have to be rich to be interested in watches. If someone has a passion for the subject and is will to educate themselves there are many interesting vintages watches available for under $1k and often for under $500, plus the cost of a service from an independent watchmaker who knows how to work on vintage pieces.

I was originally going for one of the quartz, but I really liked the proportions on this one and on account of getting a pay rise at work I could justify the extra price.
