Womens' fashion will always be ahead than men for the single fact that looks are more important to women. Mens' fashion always has to suit a utilitarian purpose.

Women have a lot more to work with than men: hair, nails, makeup, jewelry, more colors, bottoms, tops, hats.
Mens fashion will always lag behind, as fashion for men is a bit pedantic and even unmanly as it serves no purpose in uplifting his value.
Common folk generally dress like shit today anyway, middle class tends to always be on the trends.
