It's not a self diagnosis in this case, but a lot of the claims of mental illness are runoff from 2000s emo culture bringing it into the forefront of the common lexicon. Depression became a household name, but as a pop culture term instead of the clinical term it's meant to define. It opened the door to other spurious claims about mental health issues that weren't actually there, though this was also fed into by pharmaceutical infrastructure built to provide short-term solutions instead of long-term ones, putting money into treatments instead of cures, which made it not only fiscally advantageous but the word of medical doctrine to diagnose mental health issues where there were none and then to give Ritalin to little Jimmy only because he's actively curious about things that aren't in the school curriculum.

This hate child between mental health terms as pop culture and the over-diagnosis of mental health issues is what you see manifesting as people self-diagnosing normal human imperfections as mental illnesses. Although your commentary about white people disproportionally doing so is patently wrong (pic related), the current crisis of identity is almost certainly a result of the culture moving forward from a time where people challenged what it means to be a normal person, because if you're not normal, you must be sick, so you have to define what that sickness is or else you lack an identity.

Going deeper, people lack a sense of identity now because they don't know what they're here for. They wouldn't be looking for mental health terms if they only had a purpose in life. Lack of meaningful jobs and young adult life moving more slowly after the 2008 financial crisis, I won't rant on that here because the ideas here are already packed. I'll just say the same thing affects those on the right, too. Bloodthirsty Trump supporters and vandal BLM rioters, they just want to feel like their lives mean something, and they both found things that give them purpose.
