it really is unoriginal now that i think of it

All I can tell you is what I see in the people who are left. People who are heavily concerned about who is a "poser" and not. People who embrace facist neoliberalism. In short: people who have lost the plot. >the means to drive it home
I think that's the issue. If we did have the means to enact change, it'd be so already.
People are getting pissed off, for that matter, but they're not thinking forward. The left-right dichotomy is working wonders for the status quo, because "it'll be different this time!"
I think the only thing that can be built are your family, friends. To some extent, we can build free software, but people are just too illiterate to adopt it. But looking at the state of Windows vs Linux, I think we might not be too far off from winning that war. People are starting to see exactly what it means to not have control over the software they depend on.

>> No.15885288

>>15885266
I suppose it's a matter of working within your sphere of influence more than anything else. And yes, more and more I'm seeing this 'us and them' narrative, and it's being taken a step further to the point that if you aren't with 'us' (whichever side of the false dichotomy that may be) then you're against us. It's a horrible self perpetuating mentality that's actively snuffing out any real change. But regarding control of software, what makes you think that we are winning on that front? I don't disagree I'm just curious.

>> No.15885335

>>15885288
I think that, partly, the inefficiency of proprietary solutions will inevitably win out the gains from bleeding-edge proprietary research. Web development used to be tied heavily to proprietary solution, now almost everything that is modern and competent is *at least* open source. Linux provides the foundation for the most popular phone OS, and is being talked about more and more as a phone OS unto itself as Android is an increasingly anti-freedom OS.

Correctly written software can be reused indefinitely. The progress is slow and rewrites happen constantly, but certain things stick, and each of these building blocks are what will eventually build a real revolution. There's a reason intellectual property laws are fought for with so much money. Today, I can with just no more than one dozen lines of code set up a web server. Artificial intelligence is similarly accessible. And I do not have to pay for it nor am I bound by licenses that tell me how I can use it.

I really think Linux is the big deal, but it's broader than that. It's that lasting, accessible technology is being created on an untold scale. It's as if we're forging ploughs for everyone to use how they see fit - but unlike the neolithic, these ploughs aren't limited by physical space. Almost any man anywhere can go to a café and download the tools needed to "make the next facebook", so to speak. Nothing like this has ever existed in human history before.

>> No.15886115

>>15885335
This is all very rousing, and I do sense that we are on the cusp of something that could be incredible - something not unlike the digital agora that everyone was raving about in the 90s. But I think this comes back to your comment about the means being the issue, because most people aren't going to a cafe to make the next Facebook. And that is the main aspect of all this that I'm looking to perpetuate; the action. Though I'm not in cafés throwing together something cool either, so perhaps I ought to stop simply talking about it and lead by example.

Leading by example is something most people seem to have forgotten, hehe. I'm not blaming you for aptly pointing out that access to technology isn't where it could be. Adoption isn't where it could be. There are people in the first world who don't plan their economy in any way whatsoever, yet they have access to such software on every device they own, and they might even be in great need to plan their economy.

Digital agora, hm. I think that term was before my time. I am actually quite the bit younger than you, but still significantly older than most people who browse this board.

Feel free to post clothing that inspires you then.
Keep in mind that these collections came out several years ago now so sorry if they're no longer fresh

>>15886983
I don't think it needs to be that. I think a lot of what people are calling bondage details are just military details, which I think are pretty integral to a lot of cyberpunk works. Many characters in cyberpunk media are ex-military or paramilitary and the proliferation of tactical clothing makes sense, especially since milsurp tends to be cheap and hard wearing. Even something like Virtual Light features bike messengers, who end up wearing a lot of the same functional fabrics that were developed for the military.

I think that there's certainly a bright and colorful subset of cyberpunk works tying in with the neon that was popular in the '80's. Count Zero has all those various gangs that dress really ostentatiously. I think that maybe people who are interested in the incorporation of cyberpunk elements into their own style are naturally drawn to the toned down (read: wearable) clothing from cyberpunk media rather than the flamboyant stuff.

Because "high tech low life" pretty much our world at the moment. Nobody does anything of worth, we are surrounded by technology we as a populace don't know the inner workings of, and right now we are all being ordered to stay indoors and six feet apart as per government order. The tech is high, and people's lives are on the low. I'd say at this point human propensity to do things just for the "rule of cool" will lead us into deeper into a pre-cyberpunk society, if not leading us there by subconscious choice and a lack of resources in the very near future.

Are there any older anons here ? how did subcultures use to work? Did people who dressed similarly just slowly drift together at concerts or get together or whatever and that starts it? Or did people consciously try to dress in a different way to be a member of a subculture? Were older people ever founders or joiners of subcultures or is the whole idea mostly for teens and college aged kids?

Are subcultures in that way dead today? I feel like everyone is drowning so much in irony and cynicism that consciously dressing like a rivethead or something to fit in would be mocked openly, and people nowadays are mostly compartmentalized on the internet and happy to just talk to people online rather than meet up in real life and even if they did nobody cares about having a unique dress code and they just wear normal casual wear
Will we ever see a revival of the idea of cliques and subcultures or is everyone basically in a melting pot soup and can generally be thought of as the same demographic with minor differences if any only split by age ?

>> No.15900178

>>15900145
It was an interest in the same music and style and sharing it, and going to the same shows, subcultures were almost always a thing for the youth, you get older people now who still dress like they are young, but subcults are not really around that much anymore so it's not a major problem.

>think it looks cool
>try skating and have fun
>start dressing that way and listening to the music
>3 years later a buddy introduces me to some goth music
>wow this is fucking sweet
>go down that path
>start dressing that way

It's definitely a young thing as older people are set in their ways and teen interests or following music and bands doesn't really play much of a part of life. Older people who are dressed in a certain sub culture way are dressed that way because they got into it young and never left it.

There are still some sub cultures and cliques together though like the whole e-kid shit. But early on in the internet, there wasn't really centralized websites, so even though people were online even in masses, they were still separate in a way.

Now huge social media sites mean 99% of teens are going to be on the same thing and follow and try and fit in. Like tik tok. It would be like walking into a school and everyone is a skater there so you soon become one. But in the past it would be like walking into a school with many different groups and you fitted in with one and those groups had changes over the years and naturally evolved slightly different.

>> No.15900426

>>15900145
To add to what the others have said, subcultures are still around but people tend to put less emphasis on them now. For example, before my state's puttz of a governor cancelled all fun forever I used to go to industrial/darkwave shows and goth clubs about once or twice a month. Everyone at the event would be dressed goth, rivethead, metal, or punk. But I also work a blue collar job 50 hours a week, so most of the time I tone it down significantly. If you saw me at work you probably wouldn't recognize me as a riverhead, I just look like a slightly edgy guy with a shaved head in workwear. Same goes with a lot of other people involved in subcultures. The need for a successful career generally takes priority over subculture identity, although we remain involved to a lesser degree.

Websites of local venues, websites and social media of bands, facebook, etc. are all pretty good resources. I usually had to drive over an hour to see anything good.

Not an older anon, I had a similar conversation further up the thread. Something people forget is that most subcultures sprang from music - not in terms of people listened to punk music and became punks, though that too. The place where real subculture arose was in the overlap. Once upon a time you'd go to a club and it wouldn't play any particular genre of music. You would be exposed to new and different styles and artists, and this blend of cultures would encourage further creativity and development, and in turn strengthen self expression within the culture. Now, we don't have any overlap. Everyone listens to their music alone and on the net, where algorithms are built to create a sort of musical echo chamber where you're only shown what you are comfortable listening to. There's no sense of community, and there's no incentive for trailblazing either. Creativity is smothered and with it, subculture.

Hit em with the pattern recognition special and just wear 501s. I don't care that the novel wasn't cyberpunk, 501s are still highly versatile and comfy.
