Going to a trip to a tropical location in Asia for the next 6 months. I’ve really never been into fragrance beyond the soaps I use. Will cologne have any staying power if I’m sweating?
I’m assuming the hotter it is, the lighter and more fresh smelling you’d want a scent. Am I spewing misconceptions right now or is that the general rule?

I’m a guy and obviously want something that smells good to the opposite sex.

Guess I should post this here too. I'm gonna buy a bunch of samples and need recs.

I know I like fresh, aquatic, and woody scents and I'm looking to by 3-5 bottles to start off my collection.
No super expensive niche scents please my budget is gonna be like $300 max.

I'm a man who's into avant garde fashion (issey miyake, yohji, number (n)ine, etc..) I'm a music producer and also host a radio show/dj set. I want to give off night club, late night, city vibes. Masculine and unisex scents both fine.

I posted here a while ago for advice and finally tried out what I got. I'm a noob but hopefully this helps someone somehow.

Yatagan smells like pine sap with a trace of leather and mint. Poor longevity and projection but I really like it. Some reviews I've read say it's hard to wear but I think if you're used to the scent of pine and sap you'll like this.

Dreamer has a weird opening but turns in to a nice lavender and tobacco scent after ~15 minutes. After a few hours it smells exactly like Nivea vanilla soap. Supposedly a mens fragrance but I think a woman could use this too. There's a new version that's very different apparently.

Moustache 1949 edt. I accidentally got this instead of the edp which is completely different but this is still nice. Extreme lemon opening thats almost cleaning product like fades in to a softer lemon/lavender. Hints of moss too I think? Maybe some kind of wood. The bottle is heavy as fuck too if you ever need to kill someone.

Guerlain Vetiver. I've never smelt vetiver before so I feel like I can't really describe this one very well. Citrusy and I guess vetiver. Kind of like a fresher more citrusy yatagan

Caron pour homme. Very very heavy on the lavender and vanilla. Kind of smells like play dough desu. I could still smell this on my shirt and arm in to the next day.

Burberry London. Sweet cinnamon with a bit of a tobacco. Nothing too interesting but I can't imagine anyone being offended by it.

Fahrenheit. Amazing in every way. Smells woody, citrusy, and sort of like gasoline. Really unique smell.

Out of these I'd go yatagan/dreamer/fahrenheit>pour homme>vetiver>moustache edt>burberry london

I don't think you necessarily need to go for an urban vibe to fit in with your urban life. That's why I recommended Itasca. It smells very modern, don't worry about it being dated. I'd also try Ormonde Jayne Montabaco. I've never tried Montabaco Verano but people like that version too. Try out Beach Hut Man, and Bleecker Street too. Most Bond No 9s are garbage but Bleecker Street is really good, and if you end up liking it you can buy it for half price on eBay.

I get swayed so easily by other people's opinions on perfume. Tonight I put on a sample of MEM and was enjoying it, but then I read the Fragrantica reviews where lots of people complain about it being too much going on, too sweet, headache inducing, etc. and it kinda rubbed off on me and changed my perception of the perfume. I don't think they're necessarily wrong but I do like it. I do have a very strong smell memory associated with it, which has to mean something as far as its "specialness" goes. About 5 months ago I was watching that Brad Pitt zombie movie and I decided to pause it and fix food and I tried on the sample. It was right around the part where he chops the girl's arm off.

They do make fake Ateliers but if it smells the same as an official sample it's real. Fakes always smell bad. I will mention that I got a fake African Leather once and they clearly had tried to approximate the scent, but fell far short. It actually fooled me at first sniff but I quickly realized it was fake after that.

I have agonized over perfumes before wondering if they were fake just because I got them for a good deal, but it's always just been my OCD acting up. One time I got a 3.4oz of "vintage" Black Orchid for 70 bucks and I was autistically comparing bottle details to YouTube videos and comparing it to my sample spray, it was stupid.

I think I'm just overthinking it. The fb smells much more juicy and fruity, but has a lot of mandarin with the grapefruit (kind of like Aqua Allegoria Mandarine Basilic). The opening smells slightly cloying, but the drydown is really nice. The sample smelled more like grapefruit on the opening (less sweet than the fb), but the drydown smelled bathroom like.

I shot a message to Atelier asking if I can just buy a single sample from them. If not, I'll just try to sneak a comparison (maybe on paper this time)

Holy fuck, Mendittorosa is really killing it. First Le Mat and Osang and now this. Very, very dark coniferous incense with sea-salty undertones making it distinguishable from everything else. It checks in my mind everything that I'm expecting from Norne. Going to buy a 5ml decant after my sample is gone and might actually go for it if I end up not liking the new batch of Norne.

I wouldn't call it bright but I know what you mean. Ambergris gives it a 'sea breeze' effect of sort on my scent and I think it would be more appropriate for spring/autumn (and actually maybe summer - that would be the second dark fragrance like that after Fathom V) than for winter.

So you do believe perfumers deliberately create perfumes that smells like play-doh, a spice rack, an old man/lady, an urinal cake? Or do you suppose this is just a coincidence, that a perfume smells like that because a perfumer never smelled any shit before. Or do you think that a perfumer (and a brand) just failed miserably?

You shouldn't do this. I was interested in DIY fragrances for a bit (even made a labdanum-rosewood bomb "Anon the EdP") and one of the things I learned is that the chemistry of mixing things into a fragrance is complicated as fuck. You don't simply create EdT by diluting EdP. I mean, you can do this, but don't expect it to smell 'the same but lesser'. Knowing the interactions between different oils, ingredients, carriers etc is what makes it so hard to do a fragrance that actually smells and performs good.

I found out our regulations somehow permit the purchase of pure ethanol by private citizens, but not denatured alcohol. Pure ethanol is not available in the country for purchase by private citizens. Likely, nobody has been granted permit to do so. Additionally, importing it is fraught with difficulties. But buying it from another EU country is perfectly fine and easy - no regulations, no paperwork, no bullshit. Thank you Germany, I am definitely going to use this "weingeist" strictly for its intended purpose: human consumption. Jesus christ.

Ethanol should dissolve most compounds, right? I've seen sites selling stronger (and polar?) solvents for use in fragrance making, for "difficult" compounds.

I really selected most of any substances that seemed interesting (had notes I like) or necessary that were in stock. I have something in mind that I want to create, but I'll have to see how things shake out - I know it's not a matter of just putting together individual notes you like.

With taxes, this should come out to about 160 EUR... and that's not including the ethanol or lab equipment.

I've sampled all the scents I received two threads ago, now I just need to settle on which frags to buy
I'm a 21yo college student in northern europe and I'm looking for a summer scent, a winter scent, a date scent and a clubbing scent

Would buy:
>Sauvage
pretty good, seems like the best clubbing frag out of the ones I got
>Prada Luna Rossa Carbon
The only ones where people have given me compliments without me asking for an opinion, however I seem to be completely noseblind to this. I can't smell anything at all when I spray this specific scent, maybe something floral with ambroxan when I'm really smelling directly on my skin, but it's extremely faint, might be imagining it. I'd rather wear something I can smell as well
>D&G The One
Good. Not too keen on the tobacco note but I generally like it.
>YSL La nuit de l'homme
seems very feminine to me in the beginning but after an hour or so I like it. The longevity is insane as well. I'd still rather wear The One over this one and The One fulfills the same purpose basically
>AdG Profumo
Excellent but very very poor performance. Might buy it anyway just because it's so good
>Versace Dylan Blue
Generic shower gel. Might buy it for summer if I don't find something better
>Aqua Amara
maybe as a summer frag, I'll have to test this again

No buy:
>Ultra Male
horrible. Extremely vile. This is the worst thing I've ever smelled
>Club de nuit intense
Hate the opening, drydown is better but I still wouldn't wear it
>Light blue
turns out I ordered the female version
>Versace pour homme
This just smells like stale flower water to me
>Encre Noire Sport
unique, not bad, wouldn't wear it though
>Terre de Hermes
good but too mature
>Eros
too sweet
Spicebomb
it's okay but The one does the same thing but better imo

not really, ADG profumo is not the most youthful smelling but it's not terred d'hermes. imo is the best suited for office from the ones you like. sauvage is good for office too, but only with 2 mini sprays. you'll know what I'm saying when you get the bottle, the sprayers is very good and you can control the amount. a full sprays ejects a lot of fragrance, that's why is often overspread. 2 full blast sprays is too much if you have people nearby in an office environment.

some other suggestions for a summer scent, although ADG prfoumo is good for that, especially in northern Europe:

Bvlgari Aqva
Issey Miyake L'eau D'Yssey
Azzaro Chrome
Versace Man Eau Fraiche
Light Blue intense
Montblanc Legend Spirit

A very small amount of people even wear fragrances beyond deodorant. Take that small percentage, and reduce it further by taking away the people not willing to spend $70+ for a fragrance.
