Best hiking sneakers?

I can't stand hiking boots but it seems like theres no real info out there about hiking sneakers. I've found a few but they all seem to be chunky af

I hiked 3 of the high peaks in the Adirondacks in some Puma's 'Axelion Breathe'. Just random sneakrers I threw on. Got lucky cause they actually had decent grip on the rock climbing parts of the trail

You want the upper to be breathable and quick drying not water proof. The design of a shoe is not water proof, you're supposed to have boots in your pack for that, which should be leather or gore tex etc. MAYBE gore tex shoes are fine in deep snow etc if you're not going too far but you really should be in a boot at that point. If you step in water it just goes over the top because they're low cut. Trail shoes uppers should always be a careful balance of of quick-drying, protects your toe, durable enough, and breathable. never buy your trail shoes in black, green, or anything that you won't be able to spot from a distance if it falls down a hill etc. It seems counter intuitive but this even applies in cold weather (until the point a boot is necessitated, in this weather you ALWAYS pack both if using runners.) Bright orange is the best usually. Any experienced backpacker whos dropped a shoe will tell you this. In bad weather far enough out that can be a lost foot or death.

Imagine being so stupid that you go out in the woods with sub-optimal gear for your most important piece of kit and developing trench foot or gangrene to "look good" for the trees and squirrels. Getting toes cut off is not effay, it happened to a friend of mine enjoy wearing women's shoes.
Name one situation where you're wearing a shoe not a boot, but it's optimal to be trading off having a clammy, un-breathable, slow drying upper for a very minute "splash proof" amount of water resistance. I do most of my hiking in one of the rainiest parts of the world, 4 seasons good or bad weather and the only situations I can think of are super short snow shoeing trips or walking around outside the ski lodge.
actually go on a hike sometime you only see boomers and first timers babbys first hike people wearing shoes like that.

this is an example of what a trailrunner should look like. if the design is generally the same, your feet fit it well, and the tread pattern/material is good any brand is fine. there are so many choices.

one last thing, since OP has clearly done zero research on this topic, be aware that to size trail running shoes or hiking boots properly you have to go to a brick and mortar store with one of these things and fit your shoes for walking at an incline. you are almost never walking on perfectly flat ground when hiking. from there you also have to size up as much as 1 full size (some people do less) to account for your feet swelling during hiking. unless you've done this before and know your size in trailrunners don't order your normal shoe size tts online you will look like a retard and everyone /out/ will laugh at you.
the sales people love to shill these dumb "hiking shoes" and gore tex trash because they're upselling you, ignore them they're idiots.

Pic related is the only remotely good trailrunner Salomon makes and its widely reviewed as mediocre. Salomon makes good BOOTS, not good TRAILRUNNERS. Their uppers are too thick and their tread pattern is mediocre even adidas is better pattern. I'm not trying to shit on the brand they make the best ultralight 3 season boots you can buy. But they do not do trailrunners right.

I've hiked some of the hardest trails in Ontario (Puckaskwa, Killarney) when I was in High School. If you wear some bullshit trendy sneakers, you'll be in for a bad time trust me. Some kids would wear bullshit nike and underarmor sneakers and fuck up their feet while I had some real Merrell hiking shoes and I was fine. You're out in the bush, not going out at night. No one gives a fuck about if your shoes look cool or not.

i never see them except for on boomers and weekend warriors back when rei salespeople used to push them super hard (they don't anymore.) they don't have the greatest reputation for durability with thru-hikers.
their upper and tread pattern is mediocre. virtually no toebox protection as well. too much heel padding so they dry slow. the lacing and wide sizing is the strong point.

are you guys getting the 5 yuan deposit to shill in here? why is a guy who thinks trailrunners are inappropriate for backpacking even offering advice in here? i used to live on the pct (i've also hiked the entire thing) and almost everyone except the gray hair hippies wear runners almost the entire way. the california stretch would suck dick in boots. there isn't even really a favored brand, if anything the more experienced people will switch brands and models along the way depending on what they're about to hike through as they wear out (you go through about 3-5 pairs for the entire thing)
