I asked in the last thread but I'd like some more feedback, since this is a gift. My friend is a history buff who is really into that period of nautical exploration and piracy, so I got him this nautical themed Seiko watch that commemorates Columbus discovering America. To keep with the idea, I wanted to get a fitting strap to go with it, and I'm deciding on either a navy blue sailcloth or a khaki canvas strap (to look like rope, maybe).

Thoughts? I'm leaning towards the navy blue.

Will modern (designed and built in the last 20 years and onward) look infinitely better than what watches from the 50s and 60s look like today?

Watches from those decades and before literally aged horribly. dials and indices wither away, the cases look horrible, etc.

But modern watches are made extra water tight, dials appear to be made of superior/higher quality metals, etc.

I own an Explorer 36mm and honestly it looks brand new, and its 20 years old. I can’t imagine it losing its looks any time soon.

In my opinion, it's because the shape of that date window maintains the perception of many rings within rings the watch dial. Since you can see the curve of the ring and the window which presents it, it adds one more ring to the many on the dial instead of being just a little tilted square plopped down at 8 o'clock. Shitty pic related, but I think it gets my point across.

Not really. Most people replace a broken bracelet with whatever fits and it usually looks terrible due to how the original is integrated with the hooded lugs. From being a first world nation. That's also where it ends up, mostly. Just to elaborate on this - do you think I can get a $1000 Panerai instead of a $10000 one just because the wages are 10 times lower? Of course not. It's the same as literally any other product. Most of the shit such as electronics costs a lot more because of taxes, import duties, and other ways to squeeze as much as you can from people who are perceived as the "middle class"...

Around the house, I normally put the Baltic on or something. When I should just wear the fuck out of the 300m as a daily beater.

nato straps are queer, you should put the hamilton on a proper brown leather strap or a 2 piece nylon strap. if you want to larp as some old timey soldier the leather strap would probably be more accurate and it would actually look good.
the seiko alpinist is far more striking and interesting in appearance, and with 200m water resistance it's also a better daily driver. if you can get it for non-ripoff prices I'd rather have that. people meme it's a played-out reddit watch but so is the hamilton. there are far more interesting hamiltons but for some reason people always get that one

Isn't it mostly due to them not making the Oysterquartz anymore? If you try go have older German cars serviced at the dealer here they also tend to quote you ridiculous prices to nudge you into getting a later model.. With cars you can then have it serviced at a non-brand mechanic, but with Rolex being Rolex something tells me Oysterquartz parts are onobtainable for non-affiliated watch servicers..

bonetto cinturini is an OEM rubber strap maker for many large swiss brands. they use real, natural rubber. natural rubber is stiffer than the more common silicon rubber, but far more resistant, doesn't attract lint, has a great tough feel while remaining comfortable, and they do it right, the straps even come vanilla scented, feels real premium.
uncle seiko makes a nice silicon strap, pretty high quality silicon and it's a forum favorite. pricey but good designs and quality.
for silicon rubber straps they're all pretty OK it's not like you can fuck that sort of thing up too much but pay attention to the texturing, a good texture on the back adds comfort and doesn't get the strap all sweaty.
