They became a meme over here because they were a good looking beater that you could get way bellow retail, if I remember correctly some anons bought pairs for like 30-40 bucks.
Then they became quite popular and the off white color was always out of stock.
Don't know in terms of mainstream, but as far as internet fashion meme they had a pretty good run.

White shoes, look better beat up because it makes the stitching "pop" and stand out a bit more to contrast the "whiteness" of the shoe.

look im going to go against the herd here and tell the truth: the club c 85 is a dissapointing piece of shit. once adidas bough reebok, the quality went to shit. these shoes used to be very sturdy and last forever, now they fall apart within a year. adidas cheapened the leather and construction and basically use the same shit leather as the stan smith, which is super thin and cheap, it creases badly and looks horrible after a few months. oh, and they had the audacity to raise the price from 50 bucks to 80 bucks despite it now being a cheaper, inferior shoe. such is the way of business i guess.
