You have to know what colors suits your tastes and style. Having an apartment with neutral colors means you can put in anything you want and it won't clash with the walls and carpet.

No, not really. As a child I was never given authority over what my room looked like, and college was just whatever I could find. Took the college stuff to my first couple apartments but its shitty and im ready to upgrade. I just have no idea stylistically where to go with it. I'm not leaning in any particular direction and would love some suggestions or guidance.

Black furniture is fine if that's what you like. Just remember that darker colors show lint and hair so if you have a pet you'll probably be cleaning constantly

Tear it up and see what’s underneath. If it’s hardwood sand and polish and if it’s something else just put laminate tiles on it. Paint those walls white when in doubt

How much sunlight is there and how much leeway have you got to dickey around? Because if both are generous, go for white plastered walls and tiled floors (not an earth tone, but not garish). If sunlight is limited and money is plentiful, go for pic related English vibes. If none of the above is possible, just fill it with nice shit with some general coherency. If all is lost, kill yourself.

go thrifting and see if you can find some not shit furniture like tables, lamps, desks, chairs, etc. get a cheap bedframe. get good textile sheets for on top of your bed and make it regularly.
bookshelves add a lot to a room,but you better fucking read the books on them.
pick a wood color and stick to it. i like dark wood but in an eggshell room you might want medium wood.
find something unique to hang on the wall. my friend has two wood tennis rackets hung on the wall that somehow tie the whole place together. idk figure something out.
