The big thing for me is the STN lcd screen which has great readability even if you get the negative display one. This is mostly only available on much more expensive g-shocks.
That reminds me you should also check out the
GBX-100-1 which has q bunch of smart integration i don't really care about but also has an stn lcd and looks pretty decent. I think the issue is they are sold out right now and hard to get at MSRP or below.

Ive tried mechanicals, but the allure does nothing for me. Yes a display caseback is nice to look at, but thats about it, most of them have solid casebacks anyway. The sweep (which isnt actually a sweep, but a fast jitter) does nothing for me, I prefer a true second. I also dont see the point of trying to reinvent the wheel when someone did it better a few decades ago already. Makers of mechanicals are looking for solutions to problems solved long since quartz first came out. Antimagnetism, toughness, lightness, accuracy, long life. Im too much of a practical and boring fag to spend thousands on a time keeping tool that requires a lot of care and in the end isnt even that precise. No, I dont believe in smart watches.

Left is better, a proper small seconds subdial should cover the highest amount of space in the lower part of the dial, so a watch with small seconds should be on the small side or the dial being bigger, other option is the seconds dial on top of a numeral/indice like >>15781125 >>15781130 bigger watches with small seconds hand usually have empty dials or look disproportionated. Of all watched posted, I think the stowa is the best looking marine watch, tourby one is nice but there is too much empty space between the seconds dial and the hands because the watch is big,40mm.

Your massproduced handwound Miyota/ETA/Sellita/Seiko from massproduced parts doesnt have any more -soul- than a massproduced quartz Miyota/ETA/Sellita/Seiko from massproduced parts put together on a different floor of the same building.

Mechanical watches have so much soul, putting the pieces on the machinery, hit the start button and then assembling the pieces is something magical.

While terms like "soul" are basically marketing created bullshit, there is are a couple of arguments to be made for why it's worth still caring about mechanical watches.

Fundamentally, the problem with quartz watches is that it makes acceptable performing movements extremely cheap to mass produce, and this very cheapness of movement ends up incentivizing making the whole rest of the watch cheaper and more disposable to get the price down as far as possible, and to make designs that appeal to as broad a market as possible (i.e. mall browsing normies). All of these incentives have driven the quartz market to disposable oversized poorly made trash, with a few exceptions.

Mechanical movements, even ones where the manufacturing has been semi-automated (e.g. Seikoa 7S/4R/6R and ETA Powermatics) still involve orders of magnitude more skilled labour in assembly and adjustment than your average quartz movement does. This raises the cost floor for mechanical watches, and thereby incentivizes watchmakers to at least try and bring the rest of the watch up to a quality standard where the cost of the movement is at least somewhat justifiable. Plus, since much more of the customer base for mechanical watches is made up of enthusiasts, there is much more of an incentive for manufacturers to actually respect the design traditions of watchmaking, leading to less ugly designs (on average, I'm aware Hublot exist).

Plus, for some people at least, the additional skilled labour and attention to detail required to make a mechanical movement (or HAQ quartz, or Spring Drive) and the greater labour and care put into the exterior of the watch make it a much more interesting item to own and look at than something mass produced down to the lowest common denominator.

Also, those Nomos movements are receiving--literally--100-1000x more skilled labour per movement in finishing, assembly, and adjustment than 99.99% of non-HAQ quartz do.

I honestly think 38mm is the max size for the Marine style watch (6.7inch wrist) for myself, 40mm is still to big maybe if you had a 7.5inch wrist it would be okay.

I gave the Laco a try, just to big for me but at 42mm it was easy to read. I honestly love the design off it, if it was just 40mm I think I could have lived with it muh ocd.

Rolex, for all their faults, were one of the few brands who did not start cheaping out on manufacturing their watches as much as possible to be able to maximize their spending on marketing, nor have they as dramatically pandered to normie aesthetic tastes as much as many other Swiss brands have.

Rolex is owned by a charitable trust, and that allowed Rolex to retain a long-term value creation perspective over a short-term quarterly returns maximization perspective that most of the other big industry players have. They've also started to turn Tudor into a legitimate higher end production watchmaker than it ever was historically.

And I say this as someone who can't stand modern maxi-case Rolex models, nor the absurd scarcity tactics they are using now.

Compare that to the Swatch Group, which acquired Omega, Lemania, Tissot, Longines, etc., promptly closed their historically important movement design and manufacturing abilities, and turned them into a bunch of marketing departments for generic mid-range shitters made on the same production line and stamped with one of 12 dead watch company names on the dial. Or what TAG turned Heuer into. Or what everyone between the quartz crisis and LVMH did with Zenith. Etc., Etc.

My vote would be on something like the Timex Fairfield 37mm. I want to say they come on a metal mesh bracelet, but an 18mm leather strap should be easy to source down the line if you prefer that look.
