What's a good watch for a blue collar industrial maintenance guy? It'll be for my days off and to and from work as I can't wear a watch at work.
An anon has already recommended the Casio Oceanus OCW-S100-1AJF and it's under consideration. Just want to hear more recommendations.

I feel that the tissot may be too upmarket to wear to graduate school but compared to the hamiltons, the tissot is more versatile and will be worn for longer I imagine.

They bought themselves out from a conglomerate a few years (or decades) after the quartz crysis, they make several calibers in house, their less expensive models of course only have a no-idea-what-spec Sellita, I think, with a different rotor. They're a great brand. Over 100 years old, and one of the few genuinely independent Swiss brands still going. I don't love too many of the watches since I'm more into vintage, but love the Divers 65 range (even if there are probably too many now) and the Big Crown, particularly in bronze. The Aquis is excellent for the money, and the new one with the Oris caliber 400 is pretty incredible with its 5 day power reserve and 10 year warranty, but people are saying there are some problems with it.

Back around the year 2000 Lange gave the Swiss a huge wake-up call.

Yes, but no other brand in Grand Seiko's price bracket wants to spend as much on external finishing as GS does. That said, Rolex has better end link to case fitment, less flex in their bracelets, and glide-lock and JLC has better movement finishing on their entry level steel models. Plus Rolex and JLC have free sprung balance movements while, for now, GS remains mostly on regulated balances.

You can't just point to any one manufacturer in that price bracket and say that they are unambiguously the best over the other.

Yeah they are solid, a few great dive, dress, and casual lines. Aquis divers are pretty good value. The 65 I wouldn't recommend due to only 100m WR. The Big Crown pointer date is an aesthetic piece with a lot of great color choices. They also have nice minimalist dress watches. And as a few anons mentioned, they are independent and generally have high build quality.

I already own Lange and I could afford that if I wanted to but I would not buy that model for a few reasons. Firstly its a large and very thick watch. No matter how good the movement is the watch is too big. Honesty I don't like the dial, it's too busy. Patek perpetual calander chronographs are the benchmark for how to design those. Lastly the resale market for Lange currently sucks. You can go into their boutique's and get a discount on almost all their watches. It's stupid to buy Lange at list price atm and even buying used to remove depreciation the 2nd hand prices aren't going up.

Thought you liked the laco? I like the size of the stowa and the fact that it's a bit more military/casual, but the deckla looks like a great deal for the money. Looks like they make the dial case and hands in house. I also like the look with the red 12. I also have 6.7 " wrists and think it would be borderline - the face is the same size as my presage which I'm fine with and it's only a little longer.

>Tweeds are an icon of traditional Scottish and Irish clothing, being desirable for informal outerwear, due to the material being moisture-resistant and durable. Tweeds are made to withstand harsh climates and are commonly worn for outdoor activities such as shooting and hunting, in both Ireland and Scotland.
>Traditionally used for upper-class country clothing like shooting jackets, tweed became popular among the Edwardian middle classes who associated it with the leisurely pursuits of the elite. It is not uncommon for members of long-established British and American land-owning families to wear high quality heirloom tweed inherited from their grandparents, some of which pre-dated the Second World War.

>Perhaps the most interesting case interpretation of the three, however, is the Rado True SquareXFormafantasma (a Dutch/Italian design studio) ($2,550)
>Rendered in a clean light matte gray, the streamlined 38mm ceramic case takes inspiration from demi-hunter pocket watch cases by extending the bezel over nearly the entire top surface of the case. Instead of a wide sapphire crystal and a dial beneath, the True Square Formafantasma offers only a narrow circular sapphire window onto the dial surface below.
>Naturally, with such a small space to work with designing a visually cohesive dial for the Rado True Square Formafantasma is something of a challenge. Its solution is elegantly simple, with a minimal set of stick hands differentiated only by line weight.

so this watch only has a very small display window, the differentiation being the hour hand is thicker than the minute hand.

They had pic related built as their headquarters, and then another major building in another location.
They're also very much going full ham artistically with the "cabinotiers" series like "les masques" etc.
Plus, they're in the same group as Lange, yet by making nearly all their movements "Geneva seal" movements, they directly compete with Lange in the main area Lange is famous for: movement finishing.

The Seiko sub-division that manufacturers the cases and bracelets for Seiko's upper mid-range and up models and does the basic machining and finishing (non-zaratsu) for Grand Seiko cases and bracelets makes Casio's steel cases and bracelets. It's why the external finishing on the Oceanus and Mr. G line is so good.

Yeah get it. I almost just bought one myself but i decided i don't like sandwich dials. I really don't think there are any problems and it seems to review well. I haven't heard about people having serious QC issues with them either.
You should at least look at the Lorier Neptune 3 since it has a similar retro style going on but the aquascape is very nice.

I'm pretty sure that even applies to the cases for the vintage Casio digitals. The crispness of the case edges, brushes and polishing are absurdly good for the price. Too bad the bracelets are fucking trash though. I need to find a solid link oyster I can put on mine.

trying to really get into watches, know a bit about them but not all too much. couple questions
>what are some watches to avoid at all costs?

>what are some watches that are from impressive brands that dont cost as much as a car?
thanks

When I got mine I didn't take it off even once for months, I'm still making a conscious effort to give my other watches wrist time.
>Pros
+sapphire bezel and sandwich dial are sexy vintage touches and very well executed
+finishing is great for the money
+movement is very solid and accurate
+tropic strap is god tier comfy, very supple
>Cons
-lume on bezel is pretty weak
-my bezel came slightly misaligned, an easy fix though when I can be bothered to get around to it

It's a fucking fantastic watch imo and actually gave me buyers remorse about some of my other watches
