$2000 is the domain of semiluxury brands with long history like Oris and the rest. You can still get an exceptional sarb tier seiko with $2000 and that comes with inhouse calibre.

Because it's not 'only steel', it's the Rolex proprietary alloy which is very good. I own steel and titanium and honestly I prefer steel. Titanium isn't more scratch resistant, only impact, and since that is the most common form of damage to a case or bracelet you are basically paying a higher price simply for the lighter weight. Some people like lighter watches, I have found out I don't. If I'm wearing something expensive I enjoy the fact I can feel it on my wrist.
