Lumed mn and parachute straps

Looking for a tool/diver esque watch for under 1g. Would like a date if possible, mechanical movement. Something that looks like an oris or baltic diver. Was considering Lorier but seeing if there's other options. Willing to save up for a more expensive one if I'm getting more "watch" out of it. Don't care if it's in house or eta just want a solid good movement mainly and want it to look like the watches mentioned.

Are there ANY small (As in 38mm or under) dress watches in the traditional style that aren't like £50k? By traditional I mean roman numerals, breguet detailing, blued hands etc, the hallmarks of 18th century swiss horology (Doesn't need all those things and doesn't need to be swiss, just in that tradition). No art deco or bauhaus minimalism. Even something at regular luxury prices like Rolex or Omega but preferably under £2000. It's bizarre to me that it's easier to find sport watches at 36mm than anything dressy, but I get these designs predate wristwatches altogether.

If it were an engraving on a solid caseback. A well done engraved caseback is a million times better than printing on a sapphire caseback. Especially when, as you said, the Spring Drive isn't that visually appealing.
Their choice of a printed Godzilla on a sapphire back is the worst of both worlds. You cannot see the movement, and the image looks like shit and isn't given the weight it could have. A solid caseback probably would have slimmed the watch down by a millimeter too.

>Let’s get one thing out of the way first: I have no problem with someone buying a watch for less than $1,000. This is because these watches are not pretending to be timepieces of any importance. They are fashion jewelry or they are pieces of lumpy digital plastic sporting equipment and they know it. And all are disposable. So they draw the glassy-eyed masses with their dinner-plate size, their garish dials and their trendy belt-sized straps. Everyone needs to slum now and then, and I am willing to look the other way. Having said this, never — and I mean never — waste my time with another question about Nixon watches. When you grow out of that phase and start growing hair on your chest, then come back and we can talk.
>No, the problem is with the next step up, the aforementioned Stygian netherworld of mid-tier watch brands. These watches offend me because they deign to consider themselves serious timepieces, often preying upon the novice watch buyer by plying them with false pedigree and tenuous history. You see, horology is a centuries-old art, cared for through the years by those who respect it, nurture it and pass it down. To trade on this esteemed lineage and purport to be a part of it only defiles it. It is akin to Thomas Kinkade calling himself an artist while selling mass-produced landscapes in shopping malls. These watches are, with few exceptions, using identical movements, cranked out by the Swatch juggernaut by the thousands, and dropped into unimaginative cases that have run off an assembly line in China. There is no innovation, no passion and no tradition. It is merely marketing.
Well?

Thanks, anon. I was finally able to find it last year on Yahoo Auctions Japan. After a bidding war was able to grab it for $400 or so when regular non-Shenmue models of the same watch got for about $100 - $200 or so so yeah a little more. Definitely play the games if you ever get the itch. Cool story and totally immersive. I also have that white model on the right.

Fusee movements were already a thing but got out of fashion. I guess that there is not much you can do, besides use it for power transfer from the mainspring. The chain would have to be very precise to be used for the hand movement. It's cheaper to make gears. Also chain stretch could become a problem.

But look it up yourself, maybe you find out the real reason for fusee movement dissapearance. (there are very few, very expensive chain watches, produced in the past 5 years).

The Monaco was originally a movie prop for McQueen's movie "Lemans," and six copies were made for him to wear during the movie production. McQueen's favorite watch at the time was his personal Rolex Sub 5512 that he wore daily, and it can be seen in part the movie as well.
There's nothing wrong with liking the Monaco, but if you want one because of it's connection to McQueen then keep in mind that it was never a watch he wore in real life.

>> No.15732488

I think you have to content yourself with the fact that anything below that price bracket you are likely dealing with a piece of design rather than a piece of horology. That's absolutely okay, and you can get the same pleasure out of a mass produced technology simply because it's in some way 'historical'. It's in the same sense that I get pleasure out of something like a physical radio - it's cheap, but the mechanism behind it hasn't changed in 100 years. At least there are still midrange brands out there, although vanishingly few, that can claim a little bit of historicity, design in the casework or hand-finishing even if it's not 'horology'

Although the question is a bit pointless since 'horology' is interchangeable with any other field that leads to an output. You wouldn't say a toaster isn't 'proper engineering' - it's fine to eat up the innovations and improvements that came from the past because that's what all consumer products do and chasing authenticity in consumer products is unbelievably stupid.

I've never believed in the whole idea behind what makes someone a hero, but I could see buying a watch because you admired the person who made the watch popular.
